Green cannot play SS anymore.

Serious question. Is there another option?
Yes, Kalae Harrison was a SS at A&M before coming here.

Payton needs to take some balls at 2nd or move Gino over to 2nd and put Payton back at 3rd, but I hate to move Gino b/c he's been playing pretty well over there.
Entering the games today, Green has a better fielding percentage at SS than Groover has at 3B despite having more putout attempts.
What does your eyes tell you Rob? How many runs has Payton given up after committing an error and just standing there either looking at the ball or lazily trying to pick the ball up as dudes run around the bases. How many routine plays has Payton butchered? I'm as forgiving as they come on these boards and rarely do I take any player to task but sometimes a kid isn't being put in a position to be successful or they're just not there mentally in certain situations.
My eyes were reading the stat sheet, so it told me that Groover and Green had the same number of errors going into the game with Green having 15 more putout attempts.

Green played shortstop in high school and was one of the best in the state. If you take him out, where do you put him? He leads the team in homers, so do you put him at DH? That guy has a three-run homer today.

He needs to play better in the field, but I don't think he plays 'lazily' or whatever.

How many routine plays has Payton butchered?

He has been charged with six errors this season, so my answer is six.
You should probably pay more attention to the game instead of being on IPS at the game big fella. You're missing at ton of stuff. Like Payton Green booting an easy ground ball that was an error but ruled a hit. LOL

I am paying attention bruh.

Tough to win at places like Wake and ECU (top 10-15 teams) when they're getting the home cooking behind the plate like we're seeing today. That MFer let 5'5 Tommy Hawke scare him into not calling strikes the rest of the inning. Awful. haha

Again with this shtty take. Wake didn't hit Highfill at all. He gave up 2 hits one of which was a bunt hit and he got squeezed by the ump the hitter before his last. Just stop.

Accurate. Rio Britton all of a sudden can't throw strikes and Justin Lawson seems to have reverted back to his JUCO control at times as well.

NC State is mere inches away from being elite. There are just a couple of tweaks here and there. The schedule gets softer, but if the Wolfpack had tightened things up and won more of the ranked games they would be in another stratosphere right now. As it is, they likely will travel for a regional if they make it to the dance.

I think State is definitely still in the conversation to host. It will take a few more things to fall our way in the 2nd half of the season but with the easier schedule I think it's doable. Still #9 in RPI and only team in the country with no losses outside the top 33 in RPI.

Rob they are average SS play and 2 arms away from being in that category. Maybe even one arm.

We really really need to rethink our pitching recruiting. Wake threw 3 pitchers at us today and all 3 throw in the mid-90s. Wake freakin Forest. 2 of those 3 are from NC too.

How many dudes we got that can throw strikes in the mid-90s? None.

If State wins this 2nd game, I think we have an outside chance to host. It will take a few more things to fall our way in the 2nd half of the season but with the easier schedule I think it's still doable.
It is absolutely doable. The Wolfpack can go on a serious run after this series. The level of competition drops. Also, there is the ACC Tournament, which I realize annoys a lot of folks, but the Wolfpack has reached the final two straight seasons -- which means they could beat a ranked team or two in Durham.

I think it is too early for "must-win" tags, but if I am a betting man I say NC State is a 2-seed -- which is what I and everyone on the planet said last season too.

Have you looked at our schedule? We have a single loss outside the top 19 in RPI and that was to Louisville who is 33 and we won that series. Nothing about that screams we are destined to be .500

Green has hurt us in the field all year. He' making errors on routine plays. Most of them costing runs. I don't remember him making an extraordinary play all year. Seems kinda lackadasical out there.
He has helped us some at the plate though.

My issue with the highfill defenders is that nothing seems to ever be his fault. He "couldn't be hit today" yet he loaded the bases with 1 out. I love the kid and am forever thankful for what he did for us in Omaha. I don't think that version of highfill exists anymore. Yeah, issues with this team are pretty obvious:

Defense at ss: not sure if this is fixable. No idea who they'd put there and where they'd put green.

Bullpen: not fixable. The talent isn't on the roster. This is something we'll have to dodge all year.

Bad luck: you'd think it will even out.... But it's out of our control.

You can sit here and say that I'm wrong about the team, wrong about highfill, etc, but so far the improvements just haven't happened. We keep doing the exact same things and just hoping it works out. I don't think that's a good recipe

We have played two games (midweeks) in the past month outside of the top 25 in the RPI. It does definitely get easier, but that's mostly relative as UNC, Clemson, FSU, ND are all still very good teams.

I do think it's funny when scoreboard watchers give up and start firing everybody. Wish they'd turn on the games. We are maybe 5 plays away from being 8-5 in the conference and a top 3 RPI team. Instead we are 9th in the RPI and the sky is apparently falling

You are just confused. Sorry buddy.

And an early bail out for WFU already as TC strikes out looking on a pitch in the opposite box.

I was about to say, oh look, the black is a strike again. Chase Nixon just took what was ball 4 last game to Wilken. In game 2 it's now a strike. haha
