Shawn Rychcik will not return as NC State softball coach after guiding the Wolfpack for the past six seasons, it was announced on Wednesday.

Rychcik completes his tenure in Raleigh with a 173-162-1 mark overall and a 53-59 mark in ACC play.  NC State completed its 2018 regular season on Sunday with a 23-31 mark and 5-18 record in ACC play.

“Although my time here did not end how I hoped, I am very grateful for the opportunity to coach at NC State,” said Rychcik.  “I am proud of our ACC Championship, NCAA Super Regional appearance and am thankful to all the student-athletes, coaches and staff I had the opportunity to work with.”

“We appreciate all of Shawn’s contributions over the past six seasons leading NC State softball,” said NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow. “We wish Shawn and his family all the best in their future endeavors.”

Hired in July of 2012, Rychcik guided NC State to the 2013 ACC Tournament title, just the second in program history.  In 2015, he guided NC State to the finest season in program history, compiling a 38-22 mark en route to its first NCAA Super Regional appearance.

Over the past three years, however, NC State has gone a combined 64-102 overall and 21-50 in ACC play.

A national coaching search will begin immediately, led by sport administrator and Assistant Athletics Director Georgia Brown.

You've got to be bringing in the director cup points if you want to stay coaching here

The lack of recruiting and honestly the lack of caring to recruit was a major flaw with him and his staff. As a coach, I've had several kids that would have really helped that team and was even told one time "we don't recruit schools like that. Not big enough." Wrote several dozen emails to members of the staff and not once did I ever get a response back, not even an acknowledgement that they had received my email. Look forward to a new staff and seeing what they do, particularly in the state.

I like Shawn. Nice guy. Quite friendly and knowledgeable. Covering the team extensively from 2013-2015 was a blast. I think he cared about recruiting but he just couldn't get the kids he wanted or, more importantly, the program needed.

His style was what was needed in 2013 to kickstart things. Many felt Navas had stopped caring. Perhaps that same style rubbed the others the wrong way. Losing an assistant to ECU did not help. He just could not seem to build it back after reaching the Supers. Duke doing better this season with its first ever team did not help either
