Solid 4-1 win over Cal today.

The "newer" team rankings that came out about two weeks ago are apparently heavily computer-based, which is why we are currently ranked around 27th in the country. This computer ranking is a new thing as far as I know, as the team rankings over the past 5-6 years I have been following college tennis have been a coaches/human poll.

So this computer ranking is penalizing and underranking us because of our 4 early season losses, all to top 10 teams.

Cal is currently ranked #7, but was #14 before the computer rankings came out about two weeks ago.

Won the doubles point against Stanford, winning in #1 and #3 doubles.

I have to mute the audio while watching on the live stream. These Stanford fans at the match are super annoying, right near the microphone yelling "go card" over and over a million times after every point.

Pack beats Stanford 4-0, and almost in the exact same fashion as yesterday vs Cal - win doubles and at #4, #5, and #6 singles….Anna losing at #3 and unfinished and could go either way at #1 and #2 singles.

Knock on wood, but the Wolfpack women have the inside track to either win outright or tie for the ACC regular season championship, as they play neither UNC or Duke in conference play in the regular season (the only two teams we lost to in conference play last season).

Our toughest remaining conference opponent is Virginia, who was #16 prior to the wacky computer-based rankings came out a few weeks ago….and NC State was #8.

But, of course, the real conference champion is determined at the ACC Tournament. I still think it comes down to either NC State or UNC winning the ACC tournament.

And just like that, up from #27 to #9. Those rankings from the previous few weeks ago were bizarre.

It's crazy...but the tennis season is already half over (in terms of number of scheduled regular season matches), even though they could be playing all the way to mid May if they go far in the NCAA tournament. There are only 7 home regular season matches left. Two at home this weekend, FSU on Friday at 2pm and Miami on Sunday at 1pm. Great weather forecast for Friday (81, low chance of rain) and Sunday (80, hopefully miss rain, 30% chance).

Looking forward to seeing some matches on the outdoor courts.

A reminder that if you are planning to come to the tennis match today at 2:00 pm (or the baseball game at 3pm), you will need a parking pass to park on campus, since it is before 5:00pm on a weekday.

The parking pass is free, and all you have to do is enter your vehicle license plate # and make and model. The parking is in the West Deck off of Varsity Drive, only a 3-4 minute walk to the tennis complex and baseball park. Only takes a couple minutes to do, here are the instructions:

Very convincing win over FSU. Won 3 singles matches in straight sets and were cruising to victory in the 3 unfinished singles matches in straight sets as well. Would have been 7-0 sweep if played to completion.

Quote:

The Pack is battle tested, and despite the four losses, looks like a tremendous force headed for national contention. Having lost only to No. 3 UNC, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 4 LSU and No. 5 Auburn, the Pack can swing it with the best of them.

"I don't think we have [a ceiling]," Slama said. "I think we could be No. 1. We just need to keep being aggressive and stay together, and trust that we have each other's backs if one day, we're not playing well."

Looking back at the four losses (all to top 5 teams) this season, three of those were fairly close. They very nearly upset UNC, losing 3-4. In the 2-4 loss to LSU, they narrowly lost the doubles point and had a couple close losses in singles. So if they could have won doubles and flipped just one of those singles losses, they could have beat LSU. In the 1-4 loss to Auburn, they also somewhat narrowly lost the doubles point, and could have won the two unfinished singles matches. The 2-5 loss to Ohio State was not as close, with four straight set losses in singles.

With a young team (with the ability to substantially improve over the course of the season), I think we could beat some of those same teams if we face them in April or May. If things go chalk in the ACC, we likely face UNC in the final of the ACC tournament for the title in April.

Forecast right now looks favorable for having the home match against Miami tomorrow on the outdoor courts. Match starts at 1pm and looks like low chance of rain until 4 or 5 pm. Also liking mostly cloudy with a high of 75. Was a little hot and sun very intense at Friday's match.
