Tough schedule. Glad they scheduled non-conference matches against unc-cheat and dyook at Cary Tennis Park, since we didn't get conference matchups against either.

I'm very excited for this season and to see how good this team can be. I think the #11 pre-season ranking is a little low, and believe they could be a team consistently in the 5-10 range for most of the season even before getting Laki back (hopefully), if they stay healthy and perform as they are capable.

Arina Varaksina (UTR 10.21) of Russia has signed with @PackWTennis and will join NC State for the spring of 2026. The 18-year-old has an ITF juniors career-high ranking of #133, winning three singles and two doubles titles. Also has a WTA singles ranking of #911.

On the new addition Arina Varaksina....looks like she could be a good one and make an immediate impact this season. Only 18 years old, and I like that she is tall.

Here she is in November 2025, with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sakura Hosogi (a 25 year old Japanese player who is currently ranked #296 in the world and has been ranked as high as #204 in the world).

Here's a podcast preview/discussion of the NC State women's team for this season, and on other teams contending for the NCAA team title this year.

The "No Ad No Problem" podcast has done an episode of their picked "contenders" for the NCAA team title (a tier below their top tier of "favorites"), and has included NC State among it's five "contenders". They've yet to release their "favorites", but they state in this podcast that they have 5 teams in their "favorites" (probably Georgia, UNC, Auburn, Oklahoma, Michigan, or Duke).

They discuss NC State starting at 41:15. They question (but don't offer a definitive opinion on) whether the transfer from Clemson, Smejkalova, will be eligible this spring...because she played for Clemson in the fall. But since she is officially on the roster on GoPack, maybe that means she is going to be eligible and able to play.

For singles, they predict Zyryanova and Tanasie play at 1/2, Broadfoot at 3, either Smejkalova or Slama at 4/5, and Osuigwe at 6. They seem to indicate that the freshman commit Varaksina would be 7th. They only speculate on Laki's timeline for return...but say she might be back by the latter half of the season.

I went to the matches on Saturday, and as I was walking back to the fan area in the indoor facility, Michaela Laki was standing at the edge of the court (right next to the walkway) talking to an older lady (who I think might be a former head coach of the NC State women's tennis team) and I overheard Laki tell her, paraphrasing, that she "might miss this season because it takes so long to come back" (from her ACL injury).

One of the late commits, the Russian Arina Varaksina, that was announced as signed on January 8th on official social media is not with the team and not on the roster on GoPack. I'm not sure what all that means. Maybe she could join next semester, or maybe we never see her with the Pack.

Also... neither the sophomore transfer from Clemson, Amelie Smejkalova, nor the true freshman commit, Georgia Cranford, played at any of the 4 duals this past weekend. They were both dressed out and warmed up though. I thought that was very odd, because with all 4 of those being very weak opponents, you would have thought we would have played everyone on the roster at some point against those 4 teams. That leads me to believe that maybe they are possibly still waiting on those two players to get cleared to play by the NCAA (as they were announced on social media as signing on January 8th).

We really need Smejkalova to be available to play this spring team competition season, because without her (and Laki likely out for most of the season), we are very thin in terms of depth.
