The NC State softball team dropped its midweek meeting at UNC Greensboro, 4-3, Wednesday evening at UNCG Softball Stadium.

Graduate Hannah Goodwin led off the seventh inning by reaching base on an error by the Spartans infield and would advance to second. Senior Alaina Smith entered to pinch hit and smacked a ball to left field to put runners on the corners but UNCG picked up three straight outs to end the game.

The NC State softball team held No. 13/11 Virginia Tech scoreless and hitless for three consecutive innings before the Hokies managed to take a 3-0 lead that the Pack was unable to overcome in game two of the series. The Pack moves to 4-10 in conference play this season and 21-18 overall. How it Happened The first three innings were a pitchers battle as neither team could get a hit or score to take a lead. Bree Peck smashed a ball to center field in the fourth to get a hit on the board and add a two-run homer to her stat line. Sophomore outfielder Tori Ensley led off the bottom half of the fourth inning with a walk and became the first member of the Wolfpack to get on base in the game. She ended up stranded as the Hokies picked up three outs to stop her from scoring.

The Hokies added the third and final run to the board in the top of the fifth after a fielding error by the Pack allowed runners to move up a base and one to score.

Senior outfielder Taylor Ensley recorded the first hit of the day for the Wolfpack in the bottom of the sixth when she singled through the right side. Junior Hannah Church singled down the left line in the bottom of the seventh in hopes of starting a rally for the squad, but the Hokies got the next three Wolfpack batters out to end the game.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Carly Maxton started in the circle for NC State and pitched 3.1 innings. She tallied two strikeouts. Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Wynne Gore finished the game in the circle, throwing 3.2 innings and finished with three strikeouts.

Next Up The Wolfpack softball team will return to Dail Softball Stadium on Sunday, April 6 at 1pm for the final game of the series against the No. 13/11 Hokies.

Junior right handed pitcher Rylee Wyman threw 1.2 innings and sophomore Carly Maxton threw 0.2. Maxton finished with one strikeout.

Even though @PackSoftball is in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, Assistant Sports Editor @AidanCarls0n says it's not time to panic yet.

Sitting at 11th in the ACC standings, the Wolfpack is once again fighting just to stay alive for the ACC Tournament. With an expanded conference, 12 teams make the tournament, and the Wolfpack sits just inside.

NC State holds just one more win than the four below it little breathing room for the Red-and-White. And if recent play holds, the Pack may find itself on the wrong side of that 12-team cutoff by season's end.

The top of the second inning saw eight Tigers cross home plate and the frame was highlighted by a grand slam from Marian Collins.

Back-to-back homers with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed the NC State softball team to come within one run of No. 24/21 Clemson, but the late rally fell short as the Tigers picked up the final two outs to clinch the series Saturday evening.

The game was marked a sellout, making it the third sellout for the Pack this season and third in eight days.

How it Happened
Alex Brown led off the game with a home run to put Clemson in front, 1-0, in the opening frame.
After five scoreless frames, the Tigers added a second run to the board in the top of the fourth after a single down the left line allowed a runner score.
The Wolfpack responded in the bottom of the fourth after junior Hannah Church smashed a two-run homer to center field to even the score.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Taylor Pipkins was walked with the bases loaded to force a runner homer and push the Tigers ahead, 3-2.
Freshman Kendall Simmers helped the Pack respond in the bottom half of the frame as she hit an infield single to drive home Michele Tarpey. Church stepped back into the batter's box and reached base on an error by the Tigers to drive home Taylor Ensley and give the Pack its first lead of the series, 4-3.
The Tigers responded once again in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer by Maddie Moore to give Clemson back the lead, 5-4.

With one out on the board in the bottom half of the seventh, Taylor Ensley was hit by the third pitch thrown her way to head to first. Simmers stepped up to the plate for the third time and smashed a homer to left center field to minimize the deficit to two. Church worked a full count before smashing her second ball past the centerfield wall to bring the Pack within one of the Tigers.
The game marked the third this season that Church recorded two homers.

Getting swept to extend its losing streak to 10 is not a desirable result, but the Pack has shown a lot of fight in recent games. With 12 games to play, and being on the outside of the ACC Tournament field looking in, there is some work to be done. 12 teams make it into the field, and NC State is ranked No. 13, just behind Boston College (18-21, 4-11 ACC).

Before heading to UNC-Chapel Hill next weekend, the Pack will play a midweek doubleheader versus Longwood on Tuesday, Apr. 14 at Dail Softball Stadium, with the first game starting at 4:00 p.m. and the second game starting at 6:00 p.m.

sadly its normal for Pack Softball, they've consistently been a subpar program for close to two decades.

Softball is growing in the Carolinas but uNC and Duke have a massive jump on us in talent level.

"It's nice, we needed that," said head coach Lindsay Leftwich. "We needed that one. When we roll back out to UNC, it will get hard again, but we're gonna take every little win we get right now. Whether it's in the win column or not, wins at bats, wins at practice, every win we can find, we're gonna try and do that and keep running with it."

"That was awesome to watch her come out and just pitch confidently after the lineups that she's faced in the last couple of weeks and I was really proud of her resiliency right there," said Leftwich. "She kept going. It was really cool."

I'm still very new to following NC State softball, and don't really have a good grasp on our talent level vs unc and duke and other programs.

However, it is very possible and achievable for us to make up the gap and compete with unc/duke or anyone, in any sport. Look at what we've done in women's tennis over the last decade as a prime example. For decades (in the 1980s through mid 2010s), the NC State women's tennis program was a cellar dweller in ACC, with unc and duke being national powers. Then, with the hiring of head coach Simon Earnshaw around 2014, he turned the program around. We went from absolutely terrible prior to his arrival (eg, averaging around 1-11 or 2-10 conference records per season) to a consistent top 10 or top 15 program in the country over the last 5 years. It just took about 4 or 5 seasons of steady improvement from 2014 to 2019/2020 until we got to that level.

Before Earnshaw was hired, people would have thought it was "impossible" for NC State women's tennis to ever be able to compete against unc or duke in women's tennis.

So I would say give Leftwich a few seasons to build a foundation and then by year 3 or 4 hopefully you start seeing meaningful improvement.

One big positive I'm seeing is the fan support is there, with a lot of sellouts over the last several games. That should help recruiting, and if you have a good recruiting class coming in next year, perhaps they are starting to "turn the corner".

i 100% agree, once Leftwich can get this program rolling it wont stop, it easily has the potential to match the height of our baseball program in competing for ACC championships and world series appearances consistently.

She just needs that initial momentum.

What happened exactly? It wasn't too long ago we won an ACC Championship and made a Super Regional. Had a lot of momentum there. Don't even think Duke had a team until recently. It fell apart quick!
