In a day of ripple effects, the NC State softball team split day two at the Black and Gold Classic hosted by UCF in Orlando to move to 2-2 on the season.
The Wolfpack defeated James Madison, 5-0, in game one before dropping the second game, 3-1, to host Central Florida.

How it Happened
- Junior utility player Madison Inscoe was the first member of the Pack to get a hit down when she doubled to left center in the top of the first.
- Freshman infielder Kendall Simmers started a ripple effect in the top of the second when she singled to left field to record her first collegiate and advance junior MaKayla Marbury to second. Teagan Thrunk followed suit by singling to the JMU shortstop and beating the throw to first to load the bases for Ellie Goins.
- Goins singled through the left side and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Dukes to bring two home and allow NC State to get a crooked number on the board. Sophomore Tori Ensley hit a sacrifice fly to get Thrunk home and Goins to third, adding a third run to the board for the Pack. Goins would later score on a passed ball, giving NC State a 4-0 lead.
- Senior Taylor Ensley recorded the Pack's fourth hit of the frame when she singled through the left side. JMU would pick up the final out of the frame to end the Pack's scoring run.
- Sophomore right handed pitcher Carly Maxton picked up her first two strikeouts of the outing in the bottom of the second to keep the Dukes off the board.
- Thrunk led off the fourth inning with a single to left and was then able to advance to second on a throwing error by the Dukes left fielder.
- Similar to the second inning, Tori Ensley hit a sacrifice fly to bring Thrunk home for the second time in the game to push the lead to five in the fourth.
- Taylor Ensley secured her second hit of the outing when she singled to left and freshman Kam Munson was brought in to pinch run. Munson would steal second while Inscoe was at the plate for her third plate appearance.
- Junior catcher Hannah Church led off the fifth inning with a single to left field to mark her first hit of the day and the team's eighth.
- The Dukes picked up their first hit of the outing in the bottom of the fifth when Hannah Hennessey doubled to right center.
- Tori Ensley picked up her first hit of the afternoon in the top of the sixth when she singled to left field.
- JMU picked up its second hit of the outing in the bottom of the sixth when Jasmine Hall singled up the middle.
- Maxton secured the win in the circle for the Wolfpack to mark the first of the season for her and it marked her first career shutout. She finished with six strikeouts to mark a new career high.
- Church and Thrunk each finished with two hits to lead the Pack from the box while Tori Ensley and Goins led with two RBI's each.
How it Happened
- Tori Ensley continued her on base streak as she opened up the evening with a chopper up the middle to reach first. Junior Hannah Church followed suit with two outs on the board as she hit a single to center.
- The Knights tallied its first hit in the bottom of the first after a single up the middle by Sierra Humphreys, but UCF was unable to score.
- UCF was the first to add runs on the board as the Knights posted two in the bottom of the third.
- With one out on the board in the top of the fourth, freshman Kendall Simmers hit a solo rocket to left center to mark her first collegiate home run and get NC State on the board. Senior Hannah Goodwin added a hit of her own to the board after she singled to left field to record her first hit of the day.
- Junior right handed pitcher Rylee Wyman was finished in the circle after three innings and totaled three strikeouts.
- Fellow junior right handed pitcher Wynne Gore entered the circle in the bottom of the fourth and finished out the game for the Wolfpack. It was her first appearance in the circle in over a year, as she missed the 2023 season due to injury.
- To start off the sixth inning, Church reached base on an error by the Knights infield and Payden Bordeau followed it with a single down the left field line Lisey St. Jean and Gabi Wilson entered to pinch run for the two. The Wolfpack was unable to get home before the Knights picked up the final out of the frame.
- The Knights extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth after a single allowed one to score and pushed their lead to two.
- Despite two getting on base in the top of the seventh, the Wolfpack was unable to score to minimize the deficit.
- Gore finished the final three innings in the circle and picked up one strikeout.
