The NC State softball team dropped its first two games of the 2024 campaign Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater.

Iowa 2, NC State 0
How it Happened
  • Sophomore Rylee Wyman started in the circle for the Wolfpack and found herself with one out and bases loaded in the bottom of the second. After picking up her first strikeout of the season to pick up out number two, the final batter for the Hawkeyes singled to short. MaKayla Marbury picked up the unassisted out as the runner at second was called for obstruction. The Pack escaped the inning, despite the close call.
  • The two teams remained scoreless through the fifth inning, despite having runners in scoring position on several occasions. The bottom of the sixth saw the Hawkeyes cross home plate twice after a single to left field by Devin Bowman.
  • The Pack finished the meeting with the Hawkeyes with five hits. Redshirt-sophomore Michele Tarpey led the Pack with two hits in the season opener, while Madison Inscoe and Amanda Hasler each added one of their own.
  • Wyman's time in the circle was completed in two innings and she finished with two strikeouts. Inscoe finished the afternoon in the circle (4.0 innings) and tallied two strikeouts on the day.

Missouri 13, NC State 0 (5 inn)
How it Happened
  • The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board after a triple by Mya Doge in the top of the second brought Kara Daly home.
  • In the bottom of the second, Michele Tarpey recorded the only hit of the evening for the Wolfpack, a single up the middle.
  • Mizzou scored again in the top of the third after a wild pitch brought one across home. With one on base, Walker homered to left field to increase the Tigers lead to five.
  • With one out in the top of the third, freshman Carly Maxton entered the circle, making her collegiate debut. After entering the game, Maxton faced three batters, aiding in putting an end to the Tigers scoring run.
  • The Wolfpack struggled to get batters into scoring position, only seeing one runner get to second after a sacrifice bunt by Ellie Goins.
  • The Tigers continued to increased their lead to 13 in the top of the fifth after two doubles and a wild pitch brought four more across the plate. Missouri finished with 13 runs on 12 hits.

The NC State softball team split the second day of the Leadoff Classic, securing head coach Lindsay Leftwich's first win against Missouri State Saturday morning before falling to Western Kentucky later in the day.

NC State 4, Missouri State 3
How it Happened
  • NC State was hot from the start. To open the bottom half of the second, Ellie Goins singled down the left line and MaKayla Marbury laid down a bunt. The two advanced to the next base after a wild pitch with Madison Inscoe in the batter's box. Inscoe hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Goins home to give the Pack the early lead. Marbury later scored after Taylor Ensley hit a double to centerfield. The Wolfpack closed out the second inning with two runs on three hits.
  • The Bears added a run of their own in the top of the third after a solo home run from Chloe Merced.
  • Barrels were still hot for the Pack in the third as Amanda Hasler hit a leadoff single. Fellow sophomore Gabi Wilson entered to pinch run while Michele Tarpey headed to the plate -- Tarpey reached first on an error by the Bear's shortstop. Goins made her second appearance in the box and singled to second, allowing Wilson to score, giving NC State the 3-1 lead.
  • The score remained 3-1 with NC State on top through the sixth. Missouri State evened things out after a single and sacrifice fly allowed runners to score, making it three-all.
  • With two outs and a runner on first, Kaylee Lambrect doubled to left, allowing the Pack to regain the lead after Nadia Sykes touched home.
  • The Bear's attempted to tie things up in the top of the seventh but were unable to get past the Wolfpack defense.
  • Madison Inscoe started in the circle for the Wolfpack, pitching five innings before Aisha Weixlmann entered. The senior pitched 1.1 innings to earn the win for the Wolfpack, while Inscoe reentered with two outs and one on base in the seventh. Weixlmann was credited with the win and Inscoe with the save, the first of her career.
  • Inscoe finished the afternoon with five strikeouts and 6.1 innings pitched.
  • Amanda Hasler, Taylor Ensley, and Ellie Goins all finished the outing with two hits. Kaylee Lambrecht recorded a stolen base, her first of the season.
Western Kentucky 7, NC State 2
How it Happened
  • The Hilltoppers wasted no time stacking the score as they saw six cross home plate in the top of the first after three singles, a walk, and an error by the Wolfpack.
  • Amanda Hasler recorded her third hit of the day in the bottom of the first, a single up the middle. Unfortunately, the Pack was unable to get on the board and minimize the deficit.
  • WKU scored again in the top of the third, but the bottom half of the frame allowed the Pack to get on the board. Hasler reached base on an error by Hilltoppers' infield before Ellie Goins stepped into the box. Goins doubled to center field, allowing Hasler to get home, but the Pack still trailed 7-1 at the end of the third.
  • Michele Tarpey hit a one out, solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to minimize the Hilltoppers' lead to five. The hit was her third of the day and fifth career home run.
  • Aisha Weixlmann finished the afternoon in the circle for the Pack. She spent 6.1 innings there and tallied three strikeouts.

One day after going 0-2 against Missouri and Iowa, NC State softball returned to the diamond, seeking out its first win of the season. The first matchup against Missouri State saw the Pack win 4-3, powered by an early offensive start. The red-and-white dropped its second game of the day in a 7-2 loss to Western Kentucky.
NC State 4, Missouri State 3
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Madison Inscoe took to the mound for the Pack (1-3) and threw a solid 6.1 innings before handing it off to redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Aisha Weixlmann, who secured her first win of the 2024 season.

Pitching for the first five innings, Inscoe tallied three hits and three runs but also flamed five strikeouts. Missouri State (1-4) struggled early on to get any momentum going, especially after two quick three-up, three-down visits to the mound by Inscoe.
NC State was first to get on the scoreboard during the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore center fielder Ellie Goins hit a single up the left field line to advance to first. Right after her, sophomore shortstop MaKayla Marbury bunted to put runners on first and second. Both Goins and Marbury were able to advance off of a wild pitch from Bears pitcher Makenzi Swick, advancing them into scoring position. Inscoe hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Goins while right fielder Taylor Ensley doubled to center field and drove Marbury in.
Heading into the third inning up 2-0, NC State was hoping for another three quick outs to go back on offense. However, Missouri State's first baseman Chloe Merced launched a home run over center field, cutting it to a 2-1 game. The Pack responded with a run of its own, courtesy of a Goins RBI-single.
Both teams went scoreless throughout the fourth and fifth innings, but the runs picked back up in the sixth. Missouri State recorded two runs off of two hits in the top of the inning to even the game at three apiece, causing Inscoe to be relieved by Weixlmann
NC State earned its game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, closing the game out at 4-3 in favor of the red-and-white. Taylor Enlsey singled up the middle and sent sophomore pinch runner Nadia Stokes to first base. Senior second baseman Kaylee Lambrechet stepped up to the plate and delivered a double to right field, sending Stokes home and securing NC State's first win of the season.

Western Kentucky 7, NC State 2
The second game of the day saw the Pack take on Western Kentucky (3-1) who immediately jumped into action during the first inning. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Rylee Wyman got the start for the matchup, but was quickly pulled one out into the first inning and replaced by freshman right-handed pitcher Carly Maxton.
The Hilltopers dominated offensively in the top of the first, scoring six runs off of five hits. Poor defense early on allowed Western Kentucky players to get on base and run up the score early. Shortstop TJ Webster brought in two RBIs for the last scoring play of the inning, bringing the Hilltopers up to 6-0.
NC State did not respond well in the batter's box. It took five quick plays to get the Pack back on defense, even though the red-and-white was able to get a few players on base in that short period of time. Western Kentucky scored one more run in the third inning, but after that, the Pack defense was lights-out.
NC State finally got on the board during the third inning. Sophomore catcher Amanda Hasler reached first base off of a fielding error from Western Kentucky, setting up another opportunity for NC State. Goins was up to bat next, doubling to right field and sending Hasler home.
Defense was a big component to the Pack's ability to shut out the Hilltopers' offense for the last five innings. The third and seventh inning were quick three-up, three-down plays while Weixlmann pitched for a large majority of the game. NC State's second and final run came in the sixth inning from redshirt sophomore first baseman Michele Tarpey. The North Carolina native hit her first homerun since 2022 and brought the final score to 7-2.
The Pack will stay in Clearwater, Florida at the NFCA Leadoff Classic for one more game, taking on St. John's on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m.

NC State 9, St. John's 1
How it Happened

She singled up the middle while pinch hitting for MaKayla Marbury, who would later reenter the game. With Taylor Ensley back at the plate, Sykes would steal both third and home plate to increase the lead once again. Ensley was walked but eventually stole a base of her own. • The Pack scored another two runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

NC State softball swept its doubleheader, topping North Dakota State 6-4 and Campbell 4-3. It marked the first two games of the Marucci Classic, which also includes Elon and UConn in the three-day event hosted at Dail Softball Stadium.
"Any time you can get two wins is a good day," said head coach Lindsay Leftwich. "No matter what they look like, I think that they figured out how to fight and they figured out to have more energy than they probably ever have before. I'm really, really pleased with that."
Game 1

The Wolfpack (4-3) opened the Marucci Classic with a historic victory over North Dakota State (4-5). The win was the 13th home opening victory in program history and marked Leftwich's first-ever win at Dail Softball Stadium.
"It's just so great thinking how this is a new chapter for history," said freshman left fielder Tori Ensley. "People will look back on this, and we're just really grateful for coach Lindsay, and we just love it so far."
The game opened with a bang as the Bison jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. After racking up two outs, North Dakota State blasted a single into center field that was followed up by a walk. With two runners on base, the Bison drilled a home run. With the quick score, the Pack found itself in a hole early.
Despite the rough start, the Wolfpack rebounded, scoring the game's next six runs. Junior right fielder Taylor Ensley hit the red-and-white's first homer at the Dail. Sophomore shortstop MaKayla Marbury tacked on another run in the second with a homer of her own, bringing the Pack within one.
NC State took the lead for good in the third inning when it hit back-to-back solo shots. Sophomore catcher Amanda Hasler hit the first, then Taylor Ensley blasted her second home run of the game immediately after. With control of the lead, the Pack fully shook off the rocky start and never trailed the rest of the game.
The Wolfpack continued its success tacking on two more runs over the next two innings to secure its lead, while giving up a late run in the sixth. Nevertheless, the Bison had run out of steam after the first inning and failed to mount a comeback, resulting in a 6-4 NC State victory.

Game 2
In its second game of the day, the Pack took on the Campbell Camels (0-6). Contrary to the first game, hits were few and far between for both teams. NC State was led by redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Aisha Weixlmann, who pitched all seven innings, recording five strikeouts while allowing just five hits.
"When you run into a pitcher's duel you just got to keep chipping away," Leftwich said. "I was really proud of our team for doing that and making sure it didn't matter till your last at-bat. It didn't matter what you did before. It's the next one that counted."
The first five innings consisted of some incredible pitching and fielding from both teams, holding each other scoreless. The long, defensive battle was highlighted by sophomore center fielder Ellie Goins, who made a home run saving catch while reaching over the wall.
Despite the slow start, the Wolfpack roared to life in the bottom of the sixth inning, beginning with Tori Ensley, who clobbered a ball to deep right field. As she reached third base, the chase-down throw went awry, allowing Ensley to reach home plate and mark the first run of the game.
Immediately following the score, a walk from senior second baseman Kaylee Lambrecht and a double from Goins put runners on second and third base. Marbury then tripled to right field, allowing Lambrecht and Goins to score. Finally, junior designated hitter Alaina Smith reached first on an error, bringing Marbury to home plate and capping off a four-run eruption late in the game.
The Camels were able to mount a three-run seventh but fell short after Weixlmann struck out their final batter, closing out the game with a final score of 4-3.
"I was just sticking with my plan, looking for an outside pitch," Ensley said. "Our pitcher Aisha was dealing the whole game and we hadn't really given her runs to work with. I just wanted to get a good hit for her, and that's what I did."
NC State will continue the Marucci Classic with another doubleheader on Saturday, hosting the Elon Phoenix at noon and the UConn Huskies at 2:30 p.m.

The NC State softball team advanced its win streak to five games after defeating both Elon, 4-3, and UConn, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Dail Softball Stadium during the second day of The Marucci Classic.

The five wins marks the longest streak for the Wolfpack since 2022 when the Pack won nine straight. The win over UConn marked the 600th win in program history for the Wolfpack.

Sophomore pitcher Rylee Wyman recorded 11 strikeouts in the circle against UConn, marking the most since Maddie McPherson recorded 14 against Norfolk State in 2022.

NC State 5, Elon 2
How It Happened

  • The story of the first inning was the NC State offense. After loading the bases with the first three batters of the game, Ellie Goins sent a line-drive single into the circle that caught Phoenix starter Lia Miller off guard, allowing a run to score. MaKayla Marbury followed up with a two-RBI double that increased the lead to three.
  • In the top of the second, the Pack continued to hold Elon off of the board with starter Carly Maxton picking up her first punch out of the afternoon to send the game into the third inning.
  • NC State managed to put runners in scoring position in both the second and fifth innings, but the game ultimately remained scoreless until the sixth.
  • Elon was able to break through the Pack defense after a double and a single allowed runners to score. The Phoenix minimized the deficit to one by the end of the top half of the sixth.
  • More offense came NC State's way in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second as a result of a fielder's choice, Taylor Ensley stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single that scored one before a wild pitch allowed Kaylee Lambrecht to score a second run. The Pack finished the sixth leading 5-2.
  • The Phoenix were unable to minimize the deficit in the top of the seventh, allowing the Pack to finish on top.
  • Maxton recorded her first career win in the circle, while Wyman picked up the save.
  • Seven members of the Pack recorded a hit in the outing, including freshman Tia Beckham.

How It Happened

  • It was a familiar start in game two for the Pack, as Ellie Goins once again drove in the first run of the game with an RBI-single in the first inning. Kaylee Lambrecht led off with a walk, stole second and eventually made it 1-0 thanks to Goins' single.
  • Nadia Sykes drew a leadoff walk to begin the bottom of the second. Two batters later, veteran Hannah Goodwin stepped to the plate and launched a ball over the left field wall to extend the lead to 3-0 and record her first home run of the season.
  • UConn managed to get one run on the board in the top of the sixth after a two-out solo homer by Lexi Hastings.
  • Sophomore Rylee Wyman started in the circle for the Pack and had a career outing. She finished the afternoon with 11 strikeouts, highlighted by five consecutive.
  • Four members of the Pack recorded a hit against the Huskies Kaylee Lambrecht, Nadia Sykes, Hannah Goodwin, and Tori Ensley.
  • The win marked the 600th win in program history.

NC State softball kept the good times rolling, sweeping its doubleheader for the second straight day, taking down Elon 5-2 and UConn 3-1. The Pack won five-straight games and picked up its 600th win in program history
Two phenomenal pitching performances from freshman right-handed pitcher Carly Maxton and sophomore right-handed pitcher Rylee Wyman highlighted the night. The duo allowed just two earned runs on the day.
"I think our pitching staff did a really good job of just continuing to chip away," said head coach Lindsay Leftwich. "So many scoreless innings is awesome."

Game 1
After Maxton went three up and three down at the top of the first inning, NC State (6-3) wasted no time jumping out to a 3-0 lead over the Phoenix (4-4) in the bottom of the frame.
Senior second baseman Kaylee Lambrecht got things started when she reached first due to an error by Elon's shortstop. Sophomore catcher Amanda Hasler capitalized with a double that sent Lambrecht to third, who was later driven in by a single from sophomore center fielder Ellie Goins. Then, with the bases loaded, sophomore shortstop MaKayla Marbury smacked a double up the middle to drive in two more runs.
The three-run inning allowed Maxton to settle in as she was making her first career start for the Wolfpack. The freshman pitcher threw five innings of no-run ball, but she allowed two runs in the sixth inning that prevented her from getting a complete game.
Despite getting pulled in the sixth inning, the right-handed pitcher looked calm and collected in her first game in Raleigh. In 5.2 innings, Maxton allowed four hits, one earned run and recorded a strikeout.
"I think Carly did a great job of like just pitching in the plan," Leftwich said. "It was awesome that her ability to just look different from inning to inning,"
After Elon cut the deficit to 3-2 at the top of the sixth inning, NC State answered back with a two-run bottom of the sixth to alleviate some pressure. Junior right fielder Taylor Ensley singled down the left side to drive in a run, and Lambrecht scored on a wild pitch to put the Pack up 5-2 going into the seventh.

Those insurance runs didn't end up mattering as Wyman closed out the game at the top of the seventh, allowing Maxton to pick up her first career win.
"It was really exciting," Wyman said. "I really enjoy pitching with all my pitchers, and I thought she did a fantastic job."
Game 2
Much like the first game, NC State scored early, and it started with Lambrecht on first base. Lambrecht earned a walk on the game's first at-bat and then stole second, allowing Goins to drive her in once again. Then in the second, junior third baseman Hannah Goodwin blasted her first home run of the season to give the Pack a 3-0 lead over the Huskies (3-6) after two innings.
In both games the Wolfpack got out to an early lead, allowing for both of its starting pitchers to settle in and deal with confidence.
"I challenged them to score early and hopefully often," Leftwich said. "Just pitch with confidence and it lets the defense play a little better. You're not playing on your heels or so tight."
After the first two innings, the Pack did not score, but three runs was more than enough for Wyman, who had a career day. The right-handed pitcher threw a complete game and set a career-high with 11 strikeouts.
"She had a phenomenal performance," Leftwich said. "I think she spent a lot of time working on her mental game this week and just really showed up and competed a lot better than she has before."
Wyman gave up a solo homer in the sixth, but that did not shake her confidence as she got out of the inning and came back out for the seventh to close the game. She mowed down all three batters she faced, putting an exclamation mark on NC State's undefeated day.
NC State will finish the Marucci Classic with another doubleheader Sunday, Feb. 17. The Pack is set to face Elon at noon and Campbell at 2:30 p.m.
