A new era of NC State Gymnastics is set to begin on Saturday, Jan. 6, as the Wolfpack will open the 2024 campaign with a dual meet at Georgia.

NC State enters Saturday's contest tabbed as one of the preseason favorites in the new look ACC, with the Wolfpack tied with North Carolina as first in the preseason coaches poll.

The Pack reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2023, defeating Ball State in the first round to advance to a quad meet against Arkansas, Ohio State, and Oklahoma as part of the Normal Regional. NC State is returning a plethora of talent from its 2023 squad, including two all-arounders in Emily Shepard and Alexis Ortega in addition to graduate Chloe Negrete.

Shepard became the first gymnast in school history to win conference gymnast of the year twice in her career in 2023, with her being named EAGL Gymnast of the Year in the Wolfpack's final year as a member of the league. Ortega earned All-Around Champion status at the EAGL Championships in March, while Negrete was named Comeback Gymnast of the Year by College Gym News at the conclusion of the postseason.

Saturday's meet will be the first of a three-meet road stretch for the Wolfpack, with NC State traveling to West Valley City, Utah, for the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad on Jan. 13, and then opening ACC play at North Carolina on Jan. 19.

The dual meet between the Wolfpack and Bulldogs is slated for a 4 p.m. start time, and will be streamed on SEC Network + through the WatchESPN app.

Man, the judges at this Sprouts gymnastics event are being stingy on the scoring. Don't even see some of these numbers at NCAA

That said: Carolina and NC State have shown a lot of promise. I could see Chloe Negrete, specifically, rep the Wolfpack as an individual at nationals if she can make some small adjustments through the season.

Despite posting an admirable score of 195.675, NC State gymnastics placed fourth in its quad meet against BYU, Cal and Michigan State in West Valley City, Utah.
The Wolfpack (0-4) suffered three losses by the end of the event but had encouraging individual performances in just its second official meet of its 2023-24 season. Star graduate student Chloe Negrete headlined the night with two 9.900 scores while fellow graduate student Emily Shepard posted an impressive 39.150 all-around score.
However, those highlights and an impressive performance on the vault were not enough to lift the Pack above any of its competitors. The No. 6 Cal Bearcats scored more than two points higher than NC State with a total of 197.875. Meanwhile, No. 14 Michigan State placed second and the hosting BYU Cougars came in third with a score of 196.100.

NC State's best performance of the night came on the vault. Negrete's 9.900 paved the way to its total of 49.175. All five of the Pack's counted vault scores came in above the 9.800 mark, while freshman Ashley Knight made her name known with a mark of 9.875.
To round out the red-and-white's five scores on the vault, Shepard, graduate student Alexis Ortega and sophomore Meg Adler all scored 9.800s. While the Pack beat out Michigan State and BYU in the event, Cal scored a dominating 49.525 on the vault.

The next best event for the Pack was its floor routines. NC State posted a total of 49.000 and placed last out of all four teams in the event. Negrete once again scored a 9.900, but senior Krista Zultevicz was the next best NC State gymnast with a score of 9.800. Shepard and freshman Maddie Hall each scored 9.775s while Knight capped the event for the Pack with a 9.750.
NC State tallied a score of 48.750 on both the bars and beam. Neither score was enough to surpass any of its competitors in either event.
Ortega recorded a 9.800 on the bars while Shepard, Hall and junior Peyton Childs rang in scores of 9.775. Freshman Katie Harper struck a low 9.625 to round out scores for the event.
Meanwhile, the beam did not go much better for the Wolfpack. Negrete once again led the charge, this time with a 9.825. Shepard followed close behind with a 9.800 with junior Macy Jennings, Adler and Ortega falling in line behind her.
Next up for the Wolfpack is the exciting beginning of its first ACC season since 1984. NC State's first meet will come against UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday, Jan. 19 at Carolina's Carmichael Arena at 7:30 p.m.

North Carolina additionally competed in the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad, facing Arizona, Boise State, and Nebraska on Friday, Jan. 12.

The Tar Heels ended the quad meet in fourth place with a total score of 195.150.

NC State opened its 2023 campaign against the Tar Heels by posting its best first-meet score in program history at 195.525. The Pack later faced North Carolina in a tri-meet alongside Western Michigan in Reynolds Coliseum, where NC State led the way with a 196.275.

The two foes faced off for the final time as members of EAGL at the EAGL Championships in Durham, N.H., where the Pack finished in second place amongst eight participants and topped the Tar Heels 196.425-196.350.

Friday's contest will be streamed on ACC Network Extra through the WatchESPN app, with the first rotation slated for a 7:30 p.m. start time.

For the first time since 1984, the Wolfpack competed in an ACC gymnastics meet and the team did not disappoint. Not only did the Pack record an ACC victory over rival UNC-Chapel Hill, but it did so with a season-high score of 196.225.

Graduate student Chloe Negrete and freshman Katie Harper led the charge for the Wolfpack (1-4, 1-0 ACC). Negrete took individual event titles on both the vault and floor while Harper earned her own title on the bars. The Tar Heels (2-5, 0-1 ACC) scored lower than the visiting Pack in all four rotations.

Harper was not the only freshman with a standout performance. Freshman Elle Hadrick made her program debut with the Wolfpack, scoring a 9.750 on bars and a 9.825 on the floor.

The red-and-white had a great start on the bars courtesy of Harper, whose 9.850 beat her previous season's best of 9.800. Graduate student Emily Shepard earned the team a 9.825 in the anchor spot.

The bars gave the Pack a narrow lead early on in the meet and after moving to the vault, the red-and-white continued to grow its lead even more. In the leadoff spot, sophomore Meg Adler posted a 9.800 to earn the second-best score from the Wolfpack in the event.

As the last to go on the vault, Negrete claimed her first of two individual titles with a score of 9.875. Senior Krista Zultevicz rounded out the Pack's performance on the vault her 9.750 marked a season-best in the event.

NC State's best event score of the night came on the floor with a team total of 49.200. Four red-and-white gymnasts scored a 9.825 or higher. Negrete earned the highest at the meet with a 9.925, her best score of the season. Shepard earned the Wolfpack's second-highest floor score with a 9.875 while Hadrick and Zultevicz both earned a 9.825.

Already holding a comfortable lead heading into the final rotation, the Pack put up yet another impressive team performance. The team totaled a 49.100 on the beam, earning it two season-highs on the floor and on the beam in its first ACC meet.

The Pack had four gymnasts score a 9.800 or above with beam specialist junior Macy Jennings and graduate student Alexis Ortega leading the team with scores of 9.850. Negrete concluded her fantastic showing with a 9.800 score on the beam.

The Wolfpack continues to make significant improvements at each and every meet in the 2024 season. The Pack is set to host Pitt in a dual meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26.

Chloe Negrete was announced as ACC Gymnast of the Week on Monday afternoon after her performance in NC State's win over North Carolina on Friday night.

Negrete, who was ACC Specialist of the Week after the Pack's season opener at Georgia, now marks the first Wolfpack gymnast in history to claim ACC Gymnast of the Week honors.

Negrete competed in three events for the Wolfpack, claiming individual champion honors on vault and floor in the Pack's dual meet against the Tar Heels.

On vault, Negrete anchored with a 9.875 to secure a first-place finish in the event, while on floor she posted a new season-high mark of 9.925, which also marked the Pack's best single-routine score of the season. Negrete's vault and floor totals were enough to land her third and fourth podium finish of the year, all of which have resulted in a first-place finish.

Negrete additionally anchored on beam, firing a 9.800 to contribute to the Pack's highest beam score of the season.

The Wolfpack's 196.225 at North Carolina marked its highest team score of the season, while NC State's team totals on bars, beam, and floor were its best of the year as well.

The Pack will open its five-meet home slate on Friday, Jan. 26, as NC State will host Pitt at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. The first of two matchups between the Wolfpack and Panthers this season, the meet will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra through the WatchESPN app.
