NC State surrendered two goals in the second half and weren't able to dig themselves out of the hole, falling to American, 2-1

It was the third straight home loss for the Wolfpack (6-6) and second loss in the short series with the Eagles (3-3-4).

NC State's lone goal came from defender Kendall Edwards in the 70th minute. It was the first goal of the season for Edwards and his first goal since the 2019 season.

The Wolfpack played with a sense of urgency in the second half, but were unable to tie the contest or take the lead. After the goal from Edwards, NC State only got off one shot in the final 20 minutes.

The two teams were scoreless at the break, but American got on the board first on a goal from Mustapha Sowe. In the 61st minute Samuel Hershey made it a 2-0 advantage for the Eagles.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the opening 45 minutes. NC State's first shot attempt didn't come until Junior Nare fired one off in the 22nd minute of the contest.

For the game, the Pack finished with eight shots, one less than American.

NC State took the short trip to Durham searching for its first road win of the season.

Playing in primetime against No. 15 Duke, the Pack traded blows with the Blue Devils for most of the match, but Duke was able to edge out NC State, 2-1.

"I thought there were steps in the right direction," Wolfpack head coach George Kiefer said. "We just played one of the best teams in the country and went toe-to-toe with them, so there's a lot of things to build on for sure."

The Blue Devils (8-3-1, 3-3-0) struck first, getting a goal from Forster Ajago in the 15th minute of action.

NC State (6-8, 1-5) answered when Will Buete scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from freshman Hakim Karamoko. The two teams went into the locker room at halftime knotted at one each.

"I thought we could have had a couple of more goals," Buete said. "We were making chances. We've been in a lot of these games, we showed that we can play up to this level and I think we're close to it."

Duke went up a goal when Antino Lopez found the back of the net off a rebound. Wolfpack freshman Samuel Terranova, making his first career start, blocked the first attempt from Lopez, but didn't recover in time to stop the second.

NC State's last chance at tying the game came when it appeared Like Hille had a one-on-one with Duke keeper Julian Eyestone. Hille, though, was called offsides. The penalty was called in the 84th minute.

The Wolfpack started freshman Samuel Terranova in goal and made a switch in its formation in an attempt to throw off the Blue Devils.

"The formation we switched to, with the three back system," Kiefer said. "It's not anything we want to be doing, changing formations this late in the year, but all the things thrown at us and I thought we showed some good progress."

NC State men's soccer fell short of working its way out of a four-match slide, losing to No. 15 Duke 2-1 at Koskinen Stadium on Friday.

After recently falling to ranked teams such as then-No. 15 Notre Dame and then-No. 6 Wake Forest, the highly-ranked Blue Devils (8-3-1, 3-3 ACC) gave NC State (6-8, 1-5 ACC) another challenging test. However, even after recently coming off a surprising midweek loss to American, the Wolfpack gave Duke all it could handle in a tense showdown in Durham.

"To be fair, I thought there was some good progress here," said head coach George Kiefer. "We just played one of the best teams in the country and went toe to toe with them. So there's a lot to build on for sure."

NC State came out with energy, earning quality chances on goal that were engineered by a cadre of Wolfpack attackers junior forward Luke Hille and senior forward Henrique Santos kept the pressure on the Blue Devils all night.

Amidst some dangerous counterattacks from the Pack, Duke quickly established an oppressive offensive effort, highlighted by a lopsided 14 corner kicks comparedcompred to NC State's three.

Along with the set pieces, the Blue Devils bombarded freshman goalkeeper Samuel Terranova in his first career start with 22 shots, 12 of which were on goal. Eventually, the onslaught of corners paid off and Duke drew first blood in the 15th minute off a header after a set piece.

NC State was able to draw level before halftime, though. Thanks to its strong counterattack and ability to press quickly off turnovers, the red-and-white finally capitalized on one of its opportunities in the attacking third.

After the Pack's first shot of the sequence was blocked, junior midfielder Will Buete rocketed the ricochet past Duke's keeper to make it 1-1 heading into the halftime break.

While NC State took advantage of its few opportunities in the first half, the Wolfpack failed to follow up on the rhythm it had established after halftime. Meanwhile, Duke scored via the set piece again in the 58th minute, forcing the red-and-white to play from behind once more.

Duke clung to its 2-1 lead for the rest of the match, despite NC State getting a few more chances late in the half. The most notable chance was denied by a questionable and unreviewable offsides call that called off a one-on-one between Hille and the Duke keeper.

While NC State ultimately failed to put another past the posts, the Wolfpack still went toe-to-toe with an impressive Duke squad, earning encouraging chances against one of the nation's best.

"If you look at the chances we created, I thought there were enough solid chances to at least have two [goals] on the board," Kiefer said. "And if you're gonna go on the road and create that many chances, there's something to be said about us and how quickly we got forward."

After leaving goals on the table against Duke, NC State looks to emerge from its four-match losing streak with a midweek match against High Point.

"I think we'll bring a lot of stuff from this game into the next game," Buete said. "I thought we played well. So we'll grow from this into the next game against High Point."

The red-and-white will return to Raleigh for its match against the Panthers, and kickoff is set for Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.

NC State and High Point couldn't settle their battle in 90 minutes, leading to the first draw of the season for the Pack.

NC State freshman goalie Samuel Terranova had four saves in his second start as the Pack and Panthers concluded in a 0-0 draw

It was the first draw of the season for NC State (6-8-1), who were playing their final non-conference match of 2023. High Point (7-2-4) came into Raleigh having won three of their last four matches

The Pack has kept the Panthers scoreless in their last three trips to Dail Soccer Stadium. In just his second start of the year, Terranova pitched his first shutout.

"I thought Sam showed good poise," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "They were throwing a lot at him. I'm really pleased with what Sam has done."

The Wolfpack attempted just five shots and picked up the pace in the final minutes to try and sneak a late goal past the Panthers

NC State's last shot attempt game in the 78th minute, from Henrique Santos, their last chance at stealing the win.

Kiefer, with two games remaining in the regular season, liked some things he saw.

"Without the ball there was some good toughness to the group, some good grittiness to the group," he said. "It was definitely a match where we made some good strides forward for sure."

NC State gave the defending national champions all they could handle, but the Wolfpack didn't leave upstate New York with a win.

Instead NC State had its second straight draw, this time 0-0 with the Orange. It's the second straight season the two teams ended in a draw.

The Wolfpack (6-8-2) had a chance to get its first road win since 2021 and its first win over a ranked opponent since 2019..

Freshman Hakim Karamoko gave NC State the lead in the 50th minute, scoring from inside the box, his third goal of the year. The Pack had the momentum for the next few minutes, sparked by Karamoko's goal and multiple saves in the net from another freshman, Samuel Terranova.

But one big mistake hurt NC State. The Wolfpack scored an accidental own goal in the 76th minute to tie the match at one.

Terranova, in his third consecutive start, finished with six saves for NC State.

On a rainy day in Syracuse, the Wolfpack collected its fourth ACC point of the season after it battled hard with the Orange to secure a 1-1 tie.

In its penultimate regular season game, NC State (6-8-2, 1-5-1 ACC) held off No. 22 Syracuse (7-3-5, 2-1-4 ACC) in the final minutes to escape on equal terms. All game long the Pack struggled to sustain any pressure in the attacking half, only managing two shots compared to the Orange's 18.

In a quiet game for the red-and-white, it was an especially quiet first half. Syracuse held NC State shotless in the first frame, the fourth time it's done so to an opponent all season. The Wolfpack looked comfortable playing out of its own half as the Orange dominated the midfield play.

NC State's defensive posture put the onus on opening this game up to Syracuse, which was undoubtedly seeking more than a draw with the ACC tournament looming. Six minutes into the second half, the deadlock was finally broken when freshman right wing Hakim Karamoko slotted the ball into the bottom corner off a brilliant solo effort.

With Karamoko's second-half opening goal, the Wolfpack looked to hold on to its one-goal lead and secure its first ACC road win since 2019. Despite NC State's hopes, the reigning NCAA champs wouldn't leave this game without a fight, and the intensity ramped up quickly.

Syracuse started pushing players more and more forward, and NC State tried everything to bend and not break. After earning just one corner in the first half, the Orange amassed 10 in the second.

The Wolfpack's freshman goalkeeper Samuel Terranova was put to the test in the second half, and he delivered. The third goalie NC State has fielded this year, Terranova made six saves in the second half, doing everything he could and more to keep the ball out of the net

While the Pack was doing everything it could to hang on to the lead, eventually Syracuse got the lucky bounce it needed to level the score. Terranova made a sliding save, but the ball bounced immediately back into the net off of NC State's junior midfielder Vusumzi Plamana.

This fortunate bounce for the Orange gave new life to the squad, and the pressure only continued to mount on the Pack. Syracuse graduate defender Pablo Pedregosa, a transfer from NC State, almost scored a goal of his own but was blocked by his own teammate with just minutes remaining.

In the final minutes of the game, NC State cleared the ball downfield every chance it got, but Syracuse kept finding a way to get the ball back in dangerous areas. After one last defensive hold, the final whistle blew and the Wolfpack held on to a hard-fought point against the No. 22-ranked Orange.

NC State will take on No. 15 Clemson at home Friday, Oct. 27 in its last regular season game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The No. 10 Clemson Tigers came into Raleigh with the highest scoring offense in the ACC, second in the nation, and had a chance to clinch the league title.

NC State played a bit of a spoiler, holding the Tigers to just one goal and putting a damper on their chances to clinch the league outright. However, the Pack couldn't go home completely happy, ending their regular season with a 1-1 tie with Clemson.

NC State (6-8-3) has now tied the last two national champions in consecutive games. The Tigers (9-3-3) came into Raleigh having won four of their last five matches. The Pack didn't back down, going blow for blow with Clemson right from the start.

"You can't play these games and be scared," NC State senior Kendall Edwards said. "It's always the mentality."

Head coach George Kiefer thought his team was far from scared.

"From a toughness and blue collar standpoint, I thought we did really well with that," Kiefer said. "I was pleased with that piece of it."

For the second game in a row freshman Hakim Karamoko scored the lone goal for the Pack. This shot came from almost 40 yards out, giving the home team a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute. It was the fourth goal of the season for Karamoko.

"I think he bent it right in," Kiefer said. "I think it's the third ACC game he's scored a goal in. You'd love to see him healthy when he can play a full 90 minutes."

The joy from Karamoko's goal was short lived as Clemson tied the match five minutes later.

Neither team could find the back of the net the rest of the way, the big upset just out of reach for the Pack.

"We knew they wanted to win the league and they were going to come with a lot of fire," Edwards said. "Obviously, playing at home and in front of this crowd we had a big motivation, but it was really guys staying together and following the game plan."

Up next: NC State will start ACC tournament play on November 1.

NC State men's soccer wrapped up its regular season with an intense 1-1 draw against No. 10 Clemson and ended its six-game losing streak against the Tigers.

The Tigers (9-3-3, 4-2-2 ACC) entered the game with the most goals in the country but the Wolfpack (6-8-3, 1-5-2 ACC) held Clemson scoreless for most of the game with its physical style of play. The teams combined for 18 fouls and six yellow cards.

"I think our identity is to always compete and be aggressive," said graduate defender Kendall Edwards. "You can't play these games and be scared and be soft."

Clemson dominated the possession in the first half, recording five shots on goal to NC State's one. The Tigers pressured the Wolfpack's defensive third many times throughout the first half but key saves from freshman goalkeeper Samuel Terranova and aggressive defense kept the nation's top scoring team off the board.

"I think when you go back and look at clear-cut chances, I think we're getting pretty stingy," said head coach George Kiefer. "The back of the team is really fighting and grinding and I think the looks they got were more off of our possessions."

With the Pack playing in its defensive third for the most of the first half, there were not many chances to create offense. The best chance came when sophomore midfielder Calem Tommy got behind the defense on the right sideline for a one on one opportunity with the Clemson keeper, but Tommy didn't get much on the shot and the Tigers' keeper made an easy save.

If the first 45 minutes of the first half weren't physical enough, the second half brought even more physicality. Things started to get chippy between the teams when freshman left center back Lawson Abass drew a yellow card.

The tension between the two squads mounted as the match went on with Clemson drawing four yellow cards in the second half. Pack players did everything they could to get under the skin of Clemson players whether it was a slight shove or taking extra time to retrieve the ball.

"From a grit and blue collar toughness and competing standpoint, I thought the guys did really well with that," Kiefer said. "We challenged them at halftime to hold the ball up a little better and I thought we did that."

It was evident that the Wolfpack's physical play started to wear on the Tigers as they gave up more opportunities to the Pack offense. It took over 80 minutes of game time but NC State finally capitalized off its hard work.

The Pack advanced the ball into its attacking third and Tommy passed to freshman midfielder Hakim Karamoko where he would do the rest. Karamoko received the ball and dribbled to an open spot, firing a shot from just outside the box that was placed perfectly in the top left corner of the goal to give NC State a 1-0 lead.

"I think he bent it right in," Kiefer said. "It's the third ACC game he scored goals in… clearly he's a good threat for us."

The goal sent the fans at Dail Soccer Stadium into a frenzy thinking it would be the game-winning goal with just under 10 minutes left. The elation was short lived as Clemson tied the game five minutes later off a corner kick.

The Pack nearly pulled off the upset against the No. 10 team in the country and it showed that it can compete against the best.

While it was an emotional game on the field, it was also an emotional night for players on NC State with it being senior night. Edwards was brought to tears explaining what his time at NC State has meant to him.
"I've been here for five years," Edwards said. "It means a lot to me man, I really appreciate everyone in this program and what they've done for me."

Edwards will be a key part of the team if it wants to advance in the ACC tournament. NC State is slated to play No.19 Syracuse in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

NC State men's soccer dropped its ACC Tournament opening round match 5-0 at SU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night.

After a scoreless first 24 minutes, the Orange broke through when Gabriel Mikina scored from outside the box. Daniel Diaz Bonilla doubled Syracuse's lead exactly 15 minutes later to give the Orange a 2-0 halftime advantage.

NC State's Hakim Karamoko almost cut the Wolfpack's deficit in half in the 52nd minute, forcing Syracuse goalkeeper Jahiem Wickham to make a diving stop. NC State was then unable to capitalize on the ensuing corner kick.

Syracuse doubled its advantage with two goals in a three-minute span with scores in the 71st and 73rd minutes. Diaz Bonilla secured his brace with the game's final goal in the 81st minute.

The Wolfpack registered five attempts, two on target. Karamoko paced NC State with two shots in 47 minutes off the bench.

NC State's men's soccer lost in the first round of the ACC tournament to No. 22 Syracuse, 5-0, to end its 2023 season. This is the Pack's fourth consecutive first-round elimination in the ACC tournament.
The Pack (6-9-3, 1-5-2 ACC) tied with Syracuse (8-3-6, 2-1-5 ACC) only two games prior to this matchup, which indicated the red-and-white would have a good chance of winning this game if it brought some offensive fire to the pitch. However, the Orange offense came out of the gate hot and stayed hot for the rest of the night.
Freshman goalkeeper Samuel Terranova tried to keep the Orange at bay, but its relentless efforts ultimately broke down the Pack defense. Terranova faced 14 shots in 90 minutes of play, seven of which were on goal, and saved two early on.
Syracuse started its crusade early in the game, tallying with four shots in the first 17 minutes and its first goal in the 25th minute. NC State and the Orange traded fouls until the 40th minute, when Syracuse scored again. The red-and-white tried to get time on the offensive side of the ball once it settled into the game but only racked up five shots, just two on goal, the whole night.

The Pack's offense started to wake up in the second half, but it was too little, too late. Even with the majority of NC State's shots coming in the latter 45 minutes of the night, it was unable to connect on any of them. The Orange hammered home the season-ending loss with two goals within three minutes of each other and a final goal in the 81st minute.
Terranova, freshman right wing Hakim Karamoko and junior midfielder Vusumzi Plamana were all standouts for the Pack in this game. Terranova faced an onslaught of offensive rigor against Syracuse and stayed cool enough to play all 90 minutes. Karamoko led the team with two shots, one on goal, in the 53 minutes he played. Plamana had the other shot on goal.
This loss marks a disappointing end to the year for the Wolfpack, but there is hope for next season as long as the coaching staff can retain and harness the talent currently on the roster in an effective manner. The Pack finished its regular season with draws against two ranked teams, which is promising for the fall of 2024. NC State performed well at home on its own turf this year, but it will need to take that energy with it to all of its games next season.
