NC State men's soccer tops Boston College 2-0 in conference opener

Wolfpack men's soccer opened ACC play with a bang, defeating Boston College 2-0 thanks to blue-collar defense and relentless attacking.
From the start, the NC State (3-2, 1-0 ACC) viciously attacked the opposing defense, racking up 15 total shots during the match. After 24 minutes, the Pack netted its first goal of the night. Senior forward Junior Nare drilled a shot past the keeper to give NC State an early advantage over the Golden Eagles (2-2-1, 0-1 ACC).
"I'm looking forward to watching it again," said head coach George Kiefer. "Junior cut in and roped into the side of the net… It came off of being mature and connecting passes in the box."

To set up the score, , the Pack did an excellent job of spreading the ball around to get the right shot. The Wolfpack kept the ball out wide, before threading it inside for shots, leaving the defense vulnerable.

"We did a lot of studying on them and knew that we were going to be able to hurt them out wide," said junior forward Luke Hille . "We got a fantastic goal early on, which gave us the momentum."

After seizing an early lead, NC State continued its aggressive offensive approach but was unable to capitalize, heading into the half only up by one. However, it seemed the Wolfpack had every opportunity to extend the lead, posting 10 shots throughout the first half.

"I thought there were periods where we were really good, but were a little bit unlucky," Keifer said. "I think there were good chances created… I just think we could have managed it a little bit better."

The Pack eventually pulled away when a last-minute goal from Hille iced the game. Scrambling near midfield, Hille pulled away from the rest of the action and slammed the door on any hopes of a comeback.

"It was a broken play that I just capitalized on," Hille said. "I just kept going, did a couple moves, a little chop inside and just let one fly. It ended up in the back of the net for a 2-0 win."

While the goals get most of the attention, NC State's suffocating defense was the key to victory. The entire team has taken on the blue-collar mentality that Kiefer preached before the season, especially on defense. The Wolfpack defenders take pride in their role and are well respected by their teammates.

"Every weekend those guys are throwing their bodies on the line," Hille said. "They're gritty, they're tough and they're not going to back down."

The relentless effort on defense resulted in only one shot on goal from the Eagles all night long. The Pack's defense kept Boston College out of the final third for most of the match, which led to a 15-4 shot advantage.

"It's been showing all season long in terms of the partnerships and competing," Kiefer said. "It looked like guys were throwing themselves at it and that will win you a lot of college soccer games alone."

The Pack will try to keep its momentum going when it takes on Howard on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Dail Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

All NC State needed was some home cooking.

After a two-game road slide, the Pack came back home and got a win in front of 1,954 fans in Dail Soccer Stadium, defeating Boston College 2-0.

NC State (3-2) honored its soccer alumni and longtime coach George Tarantini before and during the game. The former players who returned were treated to a Junior Nare goal in the first half and another from Luke Hille in the 89th minute for good measure.

"We did a lot of studying on them (Boston College), Hille said. "We knew we were going to be able to hurt them out wide with our pace and our dangerous players out wide. Obviously, we got a fantastic goal early on that gave us the momentum."

After going scoreless in their last outing at Stetson, the Pack needed that momentum. Nare found the back of the net for the second time this season, setting off a wild celebration on the pitch and in the student section.

Hille scored late in the contest, his third goal of the season, for some added insurance.

"When you look at the pressing, the grit, the blue collar, outworking opponents, I thought that piece was really good," NC State head coach George Kiefer said.

The Pack leads the all-time series with Eagles 10-8-4 and have won two of the last three against Boston College (2-2-1). NC State improves to 3-4 in ACC openers under Kiefer and 3-1 in league openers at home.

"ACC wins are great, they are not easy to come by," Kiefer said. "To win the first one is really, really helpful. To win it and look at things we can still do a lot better, I think that's important."

The Pack pitched a shutout for the second time this season. Freshman Ben Voase started in goal for the second straight game, finishing with one save.

"It didn't look pretty there for a good 15 minutes, but it looked tough," Kiefer said. "That'll win you a lot of college soccer games alone."

NC State jumped out to an early lead over Howard and that cushion was just enough for the Pack to win its second consecutive home contest.

The Wolfpack defeated the Bison 3-1 thanks to first half goals from Junior Nare and Yuta Toya.

Those goals came within 11 minutes of one another and that explosion would be all NC State needed in the midweek tilt. NC State (4-2) remains perfect at home this season while improving to 2-0 all-time against Howard (0-4).

The Wolfpack got another late insurance goal from Luke Hille, who scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

It was the second goal in as many games for Nare, who has three goals on the season. Nare and Toya both had an assist on each other's goals.

"I think for me it doesn't really matter if it's a goal or an assist as long as the team is winning," Nare said. "It could be me scoring or someone else, it doesn't matter as long as we are contributing to the team's success."

Howard hadn't scored a goal all season, but that changed late in the first half when Marcus Lewis cut the NC State lead in half.

In the second half, the Wolfpack did a good job of building a wall around the net. Freshman Ben Voase, starting in his third straight game in goal, finished with one save, playing all 90 minutes.

NC State never stopped being aggressive, finishing with 20 shots on the evening. Hille led the way with seven shot attempts, but wasn't able to convert anything until late in the contest. Hille drew a foul on Jackson Lewis, setting up a PK. Hille converted the penalty kick, allowing the Pack to let out a sigh of relief and avoid the midweek letdown.

"We started off pretty strong," Nare said. "We didn't let them connect pluses, we created plenty of chances and managed to get the win."

NC State improves to 4-0 at home this season, the second best start to a home schedule under head coach George Kiefer.

Up next: NC State will travel to Virginia on Saturday for a 7 pm match.

NC State men's soccer secured its fourth win of the season at the expense of the Howard Bison in a 3-1 victory at Dail Soccer Stadium .

With the win against the Bison (0-4), NC State (4-2) remains undefeated at home in 2023.

The Pack opened up the contest with a goal from senior forward Junior Nare in the 14th minute, assisted by freshman center midfielder Yuta Toya. The pair swapped roles in the 25th minute, with Nare assisting Toya on a shot coming just outside the box after a defensive effort resulted in a fastbreak.

"I think we started off pretty strong," Nare said. "We pressured them, we didn't let them create any chances."

The Bison brought the match within one goal in the 36th minute, but the red-and-white countered the attack with a goal from junior forward Luke Hille in the final minutes via a penalty kick.

From the whistle, NC State came out aggressive. The Pack had its first good look in the ninth minute junior midfielder Will Buete had a good look at the net, but his attempt was spoiled by a Howard defender, who executed an acrobatic bicycle kick to keep the red-and-white off the scoreboard until Nare's goal, just a few minutes later.

The Wolfpack extended its lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute due to a defensive effort resulting in a fastbreak, with freshman center midfielder Yuta Toya drilling a shot into the top left corner assisted by Nare.

The Wolfpack allowed its only goal to Howard in the 35th minute freshman center back Emil Thyregod gave up position to a Howard forward who took advantage of his one-on-one opportunity with freshman goalkeeper Ben Voase, cutting the Wolfpack lead in half.

The Wolfpack came out flat in the second half giving up three corner kicks by the 50th minute. Despite the Howard corners, the red-and-white stood strong defensively, holding Howard scoreless in the second half of the game. The Wolfpack continued to hold up as a strong defensive unit, holding Howard to only two shots on goal and 11 total shots.

NC State dominated the time of possession, resulting in opportunities late in the game. The Pack tallied eight of its 20 shots in the final 30 minutes of play. Even with an abundance of good looks, the Wolfpack struggled to put the game away.

"I felt like we got a little tired towards the end, but I think we kicked in like our second wind and thought about everything we've been working for," Nare said. "We sacrificed our summers to come here early to gain that little extra finesse and I think it showed."

The Pack was granted a golden opportunity to seal the game after Howard committed a penalty in the box on freshman forward Ervin Cruz, setting up junior forward Luke Hille with a penalty kick in which he scored with two minutes left in the game, putting the final touches on the 3-1 victory.

Next, the Pack will travel to Charlottesville, Virginia to face off against the Cavaliers on Sept. 16 before returning home to take on North Florida on Sept. 20.

NC State surrendered two first half goals and never recovered, falling to Virginia, 3-1 in their first ACC road challenge.

UVA took a 2-0 halftime lead after scoring their first two goals in an eight minute span. It was the largest halftime deficit of the season for the Pack (4-3, 1-1). The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for NC State.

Luke Hille made it interesting, scoring his fifth goal of the season in the 68th minute. It was a quick response by the Pack after giving up a third goal to Virginia 35 seconds earlier.

After Hille's goal, the Cavaliers (4-2-1) slowed the game down. NC State was only able to get off one shot in the final 20 minutes. That attempt came from freshman Hakim Karamoko. The shot from Karamoko just missed the far post with three minutes remaining in the game.

The Pack attempted just six shots in the contest, compared to 15 from the Cavaliers.

NC State men's soccer suffers 3-1 loss to Virginia

NC State men's soccer challenged Virginia in its second ACC game of the year in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 16. Despite the Pack's best efforts, the Cavaliers came out on top with a 3-1 victory.

The win extends Virginia's (4-2-1, 1-1 ACC) winning-streak against NC State (4-3, 1-1 ACC) to nine games, with the Pack's last win coming in 2010.

The first 20 minutes of the game saw back-and-forth action from both teams but nothing that would break the 0-0 tie. However, in the 28th minute, Virginia forward Stephen Annor Gyamfi broke past the Wolfpack defense to put the Cavaliers up 1-0. With his first of two goals in the game, the forward's pace showed that he was going to be a problem all night.

It didn't take long for the Cavaliers to find their second goal of the night either. Sophomore midfielder Albin Gashi doubled Virginia's lead in the 36th minute thanks to a shot that just ricocheted past the outstretched hands of freshman goalkeeper Ben Voase.

With the help of the training staff, Voase exited the game just after the start of the second half due to a non-contact injury that occurred as he attempted to punt the ball downfield.

Although the Pack gave up more goals in the first half than the second, it was the latter half that the Cavaliers dominated the ball. Once underway, the Cavaliers were controlling the midfield and developing plays up and down the wings while NC State struggled to find its footing.

Virginia continued to create chances in the attacking third and in the 69th minute, it broke through for its third goal of the night thanks to a flying header from Gyamfi.

The Wolfpack's best player in this game was senior forward Junior Nare. Nare took on players all by himself and created most of what little offense the Pack produced in the second half. A cross from Nare bounced around and found the foot of junior forward Luke Hille, who tallied NC State's only goal of the night 30 seconds after the Cavaliers' third goal.

As the game slipped more and more out of reach for the Wolfpack, it became more scrappy. Multiple yellow cards were handed out to NC State players in the second half and fouls were being called left and right. It was not the result the Pack was looking for but it battled hard for all 90 minutes of play.

The Wolfpack returns to Raleigh on Wednesday, Sept. 20 where they take on North Florida at 7 p.m.

Will Buete made sure NC State remained perfect at Dail Soccer Stadium.

Buete found the back of the net on a penalty kick with four minutes remaining in the game, lifting the Pack to a 1-0 win over North Florida.

NC State is now a perfect 5-0 at home, tying the best start to a home slate in the George Kiefer era. Including the three exhibitions, the Pack is 8-0 inside Dail Soccer Stadium.

NC State (5-3) kept the 1,298 fans in attendance on their heels, battling back and forth with the Ospreys (2-3-3) for 86 minutes. The Pack caught a break when Buete drew a foul, setting up a dramatic finish.

It was the third goal of the season for Buete, the junior co-captain from Wake Forest.

"I think we showed ourselves well," Buete said. "We'll continue to get chances."

The going was tough, with the Pack only getting five shots. On the defensive end, sophomore Lucas Hatsios returned to the net, finishing with two saves in 90 minutes of action.

Kiefer was forced to play a lot of his younger players due to injury - three freshmen started - but they held the line until Buete broke the seal.

"Some guys got to start tonight, you look at guys who came off the bench and played considerable minutes," Keifer said. "From that standpoint to still get a shutout was a positive."

It was the third shutout of the season for NC State and second in the last four games.

Kiefer thought his offense came out aggressive.

"I felt like we were a little unlucky in the first 15 minutes not to be up by one," Kiefer said. "I give the guys credit to figure out a way to take care of the game."

It was just the second meeting between the two teams with the Pack avenging a 3-2 loss in 2016.

NC State fell behind early to No. 10 Louisville and never recovered, falling to the Cardinals 5-2.

Luke Hille made sure NC State (5-4-0) avoided being shutout, scoring his sixth goal of the year in the 53rd minute.

Louisville (6-1-1) came into the contest having scored first in all seven of their matches. That streak continued as the Cardinals got on the board first and never looked back.

Louisville's first goal came on a set piece, their second when they took advantage of an empty net.

Late in the contest, Wolfpack freshman Hakim Karamoko scored the first goal of his career to round out the scoring.

NC State remained aggressive throughout, attempting 14 shots in the match.

NC State men's soccer suffers lopsided 5-2 loss at Louisville

Louisville converted at a much higher clip and enjoyed an offensive explosion as a result.

Moving forward, NC State will play more teams just as talented as the Cardinals and should be more competitive. However, cleaning up defensively will be critical for the Wolfpack to have a successful ACC campaign.

NC State surrendered a goal to Gardner-Webb in the first five minutes of Wednesday's match. Instead of handing its head the Wolfpack responded with a rapid fire of goal.

NC State scored three unanswered, holding on for a 3-1 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs.

With the win the Pack (6-4) remain undefeated at home. The 6-0 start to the home slate is the best start under head coach George Kiefer.

Gardner-Webb wasted no time getting on the board, scoring in the fifth minute on a rocket from Caio Hughes. NC State didn't seem phased by the early jab from the Runnin' Bulldogs.

"We came out with a plan," freshman Lawson Abass said. "When the goal happened we had to just keep going. That was then the only way we would get back. Our main focus was not to change the plan."

Abass was part of the youth movement that got the Pack back in the contest.

NC State responded to the goal from Hughes five minutes later when freshman Hakim Karamoko scored his second goal in the last two games. Karamoko got an assist from Dylan Mitchiner to tie the contest.

Less than five minutes later Abass scored his first career goal on a corner from Will Buete, giving the home team a 2-1 lead.

NC State took a 3-1 lead in the 40th minute when Scotty Taylor took a quick pass from Calem Tommy and used his heels to sneak it past Patrick Millard.

"To be down 1-0 nothing early, then end the first half 3-1, I was pleased with that," Kiefer said. "I thought the press, the rotation of guys was good."

It was the first time this season that two freshmen scored in a game for the Wolfpack. Abass has battled injuries this season, but made his way into the starting lineup recently. He said his goal was a total team effort.

"It's amazing, but it's not about me," Abass said. "It's about my teammates, people who help us, people around us. I think it's the whole family that's working together."

The entire team played a role in keeping the Runnin' Bulldogs scoreless after the quick goal early.

"I didn't see heads drop," Kiefer said. "I saw a calmness about us. That's a sign of a good team. You're going to go down, you're going to go up, you have to keep pushing."

Standing in the way of that accomplishment is No. 15 Notre Dame. The Pack (6-4) and Fighting Irish (5-1-3) will meet at 7 pm at Dail Soccer Stadium. The match will air on ACCNX.

Including their three exhibitions, NC State has won nine consecutive home games. In the regular season the Pack has outscored its opponents 15-3.

NC State has hosted just one ACC opponent so far this season. George Kiefer knows Sunday will be a big one for his team.

"It's going to be an excellent game to compete in," Kiefer said. "Everyone in the locker room will be buzzing. I look forward to the match. For sure your grit is going to be measured against Notre Dame. Throw the tactics out the window, the competing piece of it, I'm looking forward to that."

The NC State men's soccer jumped on No. 15 Notre Dame in the first half, but couldn't hold that league Sunday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

The Fighting Irish would score three unanswered and the Wolfpack wasn't able to play catchup, falling 3-1 in ACC action.

It was the first home loss of the season for NC State (6-5), who came into the contest having won six straight at Dail Soccer Stadium. Notre Dame was the first ranked team to visit Raleigh this season.

The Wolfpack went up 1-0 in the 34th minute on a set piece. For the second straight game Will Buete got an assist on a corner kick, this time finding Luke Hille, the team's leading scorer.

That margin stood at the break, as the Pack was unable to get any more cushion before the break.

Notre Dame wasted little time tying the game, getting a goal from Matthew Roou barely five minutes into the second half.

The two teams traded jabs on the pinch for the next few minutes before the Irish got a break. NC State freshman Lawson Abass was called for a foul inside the box, setting up a penalty kick for Notre Dame.

Paddy Burns scored on the PK to give the Irish their first and final lead of the evening.

Notre Dame added a goal in the 83rd minute for the final margin of victory.

"We just lost focus on the little details," Hille said. "Defensively, we got broken down and they were able to capitalize."

Hille felt like the team was still in the game after the penalty kick, but the goal in the 83rd minute was too much to overcome.

"The third one really killed us," Hille said. "It's a 90 minute game, we know we can defend against these guys and just hold off on those little lapses."

NC State gets a rare and much needed break in the schedule. There is no midweek match coming up as the Pack prepares for another ACC opponent, Wake Forest, on Friday.

"I think less is better right now," head coach George Kiefer said. "We've been playing every three or four days it seems like. Really, just let their minds rest, let them relax a little bit so that come Friday we are a lot fresher."

Up next: NC State takes on Wake Forest on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 at Dail Soccer Stadium.

defender Paddy Burns capitalized, frustrating the home side even more.

Once Notre Dame gained the lead, the Wolfpack struggled to get the ball out of its own half. The constant high press made it difficult for NC State to develop any plays on the attacking side of the field, and as the second half churned on, Notre Dame started dominating possession.

"I felt like on the ball tonight we turned it over a bit too much and they're a very good team," Kiefer said. "…The goals that we gave up [were] just really simple things that you just have to take care of a little bit better."

As NC State failed to get things back together offensively, the Fighting Irish continued their red-hot half with a third goal to ice off the Wolfpack. NC State did not punch back during the second half and Notre Dame snapped the red-and-white's home winning streak with a 3-1 finish.

The Pack will return to Dail Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 6 to take on Wake Forest in another ACC matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

NC State Men's Soccer fell to No. 6 Wake Forest on Friday night, with the Demon Deacons claiming a 3-0 victory in front of the Pack's Dail Stadium home crowd.

"You look at Wake Forest, it's 10 seniors, it's an experienced group," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "When you turn it over they can keep it for long stretches. We just have to be able to connect more passes. Wake did a good job making it really difficult for us."

Wake Forest led off the contest with a pair of goals in the first half, breaking the ice with a right-footer from Cooper Flax in the 23rd minute, then doubling their lead in the 29th with a netter from Hosei Kijima.

Wake Forest (8-1-3) added its final goal of the evening in the 79th minute, with Julian Kennedy giving the Demon Deacons a late 3-0 advantage.

Wake Forest had a 21-6 shot margin over NC State (6-6-0).

"Obviously, they are a very good team," Pack senior defender Kendall Edwards said. "They are always going to keep the ball, have good possessions with the ball."

It was the second straight home loss for the Pack after starting the season 6-0 at Dail Soccer Stadium. It was also the second consecutive loss to a ranked opponent.

"You can't let losing to two top teams in the country dig you down," Kiefer said. "You have the next day to just get back at it. It's a great challenge for us right now to teach them how to deal with adversity."

Up next: NC State is back home Tuesday night, hosting American at 7 pm.

The NC State men's soccer team looks to stop a two-game slide, hosting American University on Tuesday.

The match is slated for a 7 pm start and will air on ACCNX. Andrew Sanders (play-by-play) and Brad Sweeney (analyst) will be on the call.

The Pack (6-5) is 5-2 this season versus non-conference opponents and has posted a 6-2 mark at Dail Soccer Stadium. The Eagles (2-3-4) head to Raleigh coming off back-to-back ties in Patriot League play.

American will be the third Patriot League team NC State has faced in the George Kiefer era. The Pack played Navy in 2020 (lost 2-1) and Loyola (Maryland) in 2022 (won 2-0).

ERIES HISTORY (1-1-0)

  • NC State and American met in 2006 and 2008, splitting those two meetings.
  • The Wolfpack won the last contest in 2008, 3-2, in Raleigh.
