NC State women's soccer head coach Tim Santoro announced the program's 2023 competition schedule on Tuesday morning. The 18-game slate includes nine home matches at Dail Soccer Stadium beginning with the Wolfpack's season opener against Utah on Thursday, Aug. 17.

"We play one of the toughest nonconference schedules every year but, no doubt, this fall will be the hardest yet," Santoro said. "Add in the fact that the ACC is the best and deepest conference, we'll have our hands full again this year.

"There are different approaches to scheduling, and I believe this is the best path forward for NC State. I believe in my team."

After opening the season against VCU in an exhibition match on Aug. 12, the Wolfpack will welcome Utah on Aug. 17 before traveling to Charlotte for its road opener on Aug. 20. The Pack then hosts Rutgers for its first of two home matches against Big 10 opponents during the 2023 regular season.

NC State then travels to Colorado for a road trip at Colorado (Aug. 31) and Denver (Sept. 3). The Pioneers captured their fifth consecutive Summit League regular season title this past season.

The Wolfpack returns to Raleigh on Sept. 7 for a matchup against reigning Big 10 regular season champion Michigan State. Both of NC State's Big 10 opponents (Michigan State and Rutgers) secured berths to the NCAA Tournament this past season and finished inside the top 30 of the NCAA's final RPI poll
NC State concludes its nonconference road slate at Harvard on Sept. 10 before welcoming High Point for Senior Day on Sept. 14. Harvard, who finished No. 15 in the NCAA's final RPI poll, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round a season ago.

The Pack opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at home against Pittsburgh on Sept. 17. NC State will also host North Carolina (Sept. 30), Virginia (Oct. 8), Syracuse (Oct. 19) and Notre Dame (Oct. 22) at Dail Soccer Stadium.

NC State will travel to Wake Forest (Sept. 21), Duke (Sept. 24), Virginia Tech (Oct. 5), Miami (Oct. 14) and Florida State (Oct. 26) in ACC play.

Overall, six (one-third) of NC State's 2023 regular season opponents finished inside the top 10 of the NCAA's final RPI poll. Nine of the Pack's opponents finished inside of the top 30, while 10 finished inside the top 50 of the NCAA's final RPI poll.

The ACC Tournament quarterfinals will be held Oct. 29 at select campus sites while the semifinals and finals will take place Nov. 2-5 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.

The NCAA First Round is slated for Nov. 10-12, while the second and third rounds will be held Nov. 17-19. The Elite Eight will be played Nov. 24-26 at select campus sites before the NCAA College Cup returns to WakeMed Soccer Park from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3.

NC State concluded the 2022 season with a 7-7-6 record, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive fall campaign. The Wolfpack finished No. 36 out of 348 Division I teams in the NCAA's final RPI poll and has reached the NCAA Tournament Second Round in five of the past six fall seasons.

The program has already welcomed five newcomers to the 2023 roster while 18 players return from this past year's squad. NC State also announced the additions of assistant coach Maddy Haro and associate head coach Sebastian Vecchio earlier this spring.

Anyone know what the story is with the Assistant turnover? Did Santoro make the change because he isn't happy with the recruiting, or did they leave of their own accord? We was the main recruiter as an assistant at WF before Yow hired him, so I know he highly values that aspect of the job...and we don't seem to be making much sustained headway against the ACC;s elite programs...(by elite, I mean UNC, Duke, Virginia, FSU, and Notre Dame, all of whom made the Elite Eight last year, and all of whom have championships or championship game appearances since 2010.

Today I spoke with NC State women's soccer head coach Tim Santoro.

In my time at NCSU, Santoro is one of the most competitive folks I've met.

NC State opens play on Wed, 8/17 vs. Utah.

Inside Pack Sports will cover NCSU as it looks to return to the postseason.

Rebounding from a heartbreaking postseason loss is never easy, but @packwsoccer is feeling fresh ahead of the 2023 season.

A team-oriented offseason has the Wolfpack feeling rejuvenated ahead of its season-opening match against Utah.

So what's made this season feel so fresh for the Wolfpack? A large part of it can be chalked up to personnel changes, both on and off the field. Santoro's mission over the offseason has been revitalizing his locker room with a handful of changes to both the roster and professional staff and a noticeable emphasis on team-building.

However, it all hasn't been smooth sailing in terms of health so far for NC State. The red-and-white have already lost senior midfielder Jaiden Thomas to a season-ending injury in training, and with All-ACC junior midfielder Emika Kawagishi still recovering from her own season-ending injury from last season, Santoro's midfield is looking thin.

While the team had time to experiment in its recent exhibition against VCU, its first true chance to respond will come Thursday, Aug. 17 at Dail Soccer Stadium. Kickoff against Utah is set for 7 p.m., where the Wolfpack is looking to make their mark on the team's legacy

"The x's and o's and the soccer is always the easy part," Santoro said. "But we've done some things to mesh the team a little better [this offseason]. Six changes to the roster, and there's two new staff members. … I think it's something that will, in the long run, help with the stuff that you need to have in a good team unit that is away from the field, and it's been great. This preseason has been phenomenal so far."

i can read several things into these comments, buti will just say it sounds like the assistant coaches did not fit into coaching staff culture.

The NC State women's soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw against Utah in its 2023 season opener on Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

After a scoreless opening half, NC State grabbed early momentum out of the break with three shots within the first 90 seconds of the second half. Jameese Joseph fired back-to-back attempts in the opening minute of the second half before freshman Jade Bordeleau notched her first-career goal to give NC State a 1-0 lead.

Bordeleau buried her right-footed shot past the diving effort of Utah goalkeeper Kasey Wardle in the 47th minute, finishing off a cross from Leyah Hall-Robinson for the Wolfpack's first goal of the season. Hall-Robinson notched her first assist of the season after leading NC State with five assists this past season.

Utah's Bella Woods knotted the score at 1-1 with a long-range strike in the 73rd minute. After Woods' equalizer, NC State registered two shots off a corner kick. Brianna Weber's header forced a save from Wardle, while Fernanda Soto's rebound effort missed just wide of the Utes' goal.

NC State goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta made five saves, making four stops in the first half. The Wolfpack fired 12 total shots in its season opener, including five on target.

Joseph and Bordeleau tied for a team-high three shots, while Bordeleau's two shots on goal ranked as a team high.

Mackenzie Smith and Bordeleau each made their first-career starts in an NC State uniform in Thursday's match, while Alex Mohr and Mary Frances Symmes subbed on to make their first-career appearances for the Wolfpack.

NC State women's soccer travels to Charlotte for an in-state matchup on Sunday night. The Pack's road opener against the 49ers is set for 7 p.m. at Transamerica Field and will stream live on ESPN+.

SERIES HISTORY
NC State and Charlotte will square off for the seventh time in NC State's 2023 road opener. A few notes tracking the Pack's matchup at Charlotte are listed below:

Sunday will mark the first meeting between the two teams since Aug. 29, 2010, in Raleigh. Charlotte notched a 2-1 victory in overtime.
Charlotte holds a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series history. The 49ers won the first two matchups in the series in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Charlotte has won the two most recent meetings, too, in 2009 and 2010.
NC State won in back-to-back seasons in 2000 and 2001, defeating Charlotte 3-0 at home in 2000 before notching a 1-0 road victory in 2001

SCOUTING THE 49ERS

Charlotte (0-1-0) opened its 2023 season with a 3-2 defeat at James Madison. All five goals in Thursday's setback came in the second half, as the 49ers evened the score at 1-1 in the 53rd minute before James Madison pulled away with tallies in the 55th and 65th minutes. In Charlotte's first season in the American Athletic Conference, the 49ers placed three players on the American Athletic Conference Watch List. Macey Bader, Payton Patrick and Julia Patrum each earned the preseason honors, while the 49ers were selected fifth in the American's East Division.

Alexis Strickland and Leyah Hall-Robinson each scored their first goals of the season as NC State women's soccer completed a 2-1 comeback victory at Charlotte on Sunday night at Transamerica Field.

After Charlotte (0-2-0) struck first with a goal in the opening half, NC State (1-0-1) scored twice in the final 15 minutes to flip 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 road victory.

The Wolfpack tied the score at 1-1 in the 77th minute when Strickland fired home her first goal of the season. Hall-Robinson drove in a lofted pass to the right side of the field to Jameese Joseph, who played a ball into Strickland before she slotted home the equalizer with her right foot.

Just over six minutes later, NC State earned a free kick in its own half. Brianna Weber then delivered the ball right to Charlotte goalkeeper Emma Wakeman's goal line, forcing a save onto the crossbar. Hall-Robinson then headed home the loose ball to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute. Hall-Robinson's game-winner withstood a VAR check, allowing the Wolfpack to celebrate its game-winning goal for the second time following the goal confirmation.

NC State outshot Charlotte 11-5 in the second half as the Wolfpack turned a 1-0 halftime deficit into a victory for the first time since notching a 2-1 road victory at Clemson (Sept. 29) this past season.

Hall-Robinson paced NC State with three shots, two shots on goal and three points. She has logged an assist in both matches so far this season.

Charlotte struck first with a goal late in the first half when Ayanna Parker's deflected shot found the back of the net. The 49ers converted a turnover in the Wolfpack's end into the match's first goal when Parker's right-footed shot deflected off the outstretched leg of Alex Mohr.

NC State goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta kept the game scoreless in the opening 20 minutes with a pair of saves. Echezarreta first made a diving save to her right to deny Tash Hudson before stopping a close-range effort from Kelly Hastings off the ensuing corner kick. She finished the match with four stops and sits just two away from recording 200 in her career.

NC State almost knotted the score in the 56th minute when Jade Bordeleau's shot sailed over the crossbar. Strickland whipped in a cross from the right flank to Bordeleau, who lifted her right-footed strike over the bar.
