This will be a really interesting meet to follow, wish i could watch it somewhere. The top athletes who already have regional pretty locked in regional qualifiers don't need to cut training to show up at another meet before ACC's so they won't be here (the top distance women + a few sprinters/hurdlers/jumpers like Cam Murray and Jirah Sidberry). The mix of athletes that will be here is pretty strong, particularly on the men's side. Lots of distance guys chasing an ACC qualifier at the very least and the really interesting part to me is that Ian Harrison (who hasn't race at all this outdoor season) is opening his season just now at this event. I thought he would be redshirting based on his lack of racing but it appears either the plans have changed or he is over whatever injury he had earlier than expected. He is going to be very important to our men's success in XC next year so im very interested to see what kind of shape he is in.

The NC State track and field team was back in action to close out the regular season, grabbing four event wins at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier in Lynchburg, VA.

JUMPS
Jamar Davis continued to have the hot hand for the Wolfpack, claiming a victory in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.17m. This comes less than a week after the Graduate student won the same event at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA. Von Douglas was also in action in the long jump, joining Davis on the podium after a third place finish of 7.06m.

Another win came the Pack's way in the men's high jump, courtesy of Kyzaiah Stone's first-place leap of 2.09m.

THROWS
In the women's javelin throw, Jakerra Covington's jump of 38.70m was good for second place.

Mahkayla Hart took home the first and only PB-mark of the day for NC State, earning a fourth-place finish of 13.21m. Hart also took part in the women's hammer throw and turned in a performance of 45.28m to snatch fifth.

DISTANCE
The success of the day carried over from the field to the track, as Daniel McGoey clocked in at 14:19.52 in the men's 5000m to take home first place.

MIDDLE-DISTANCE
Zach Hughes crossed the finish line first in the men's 800m invite, after running a time of 1:49.25.

SPRINTS

Start lists and schedule of events for the Meet. All events with prelims will have their finals on Saturday for runners that qualify through the prelims. Notably for the men, none of the scoring runners from XC are entered into any events, some appear to be redshirting (Brett Gardner) or were already out of eligibility (Robinson Snider) but Ian Shanklin hasn't raced since the Raleigh Relays and may end up missing his final season of his career, and its unclear what Ian Harrison and Hannes Burger are doing.

Twelve female athletes and four male athletes are preparing to represent the Wolfpack in the 2023 NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida May 24-27.

A week after winning the individual ACC Championship in her first collegiate 10,000m, Katelyn Tuohy has declared for the 1500m and 5000m races at the East Regional. The NC State distance talent is in search of her second straight outdoor 5k National Championship.

Joining Tuohy in the 5000m will be Amaris Tyynismaa, who submitted a time of 15:53.07 at the 2023 ACC Outdoor Championships in Raleigh to win the individual conference title for the event.

Sam Bush, Kelsey Chmiel, Grace Hartman, Savannah Shaw, Jenna Schulz, and Allie Hays have also qualified for the 5k race. Chmiel earned First-Team All-ACC honors in the 5000m last weekend in Raleigh, while Hays received Second-Team.

The action doesn't stop there for Chmiel and Hays, as they both qualified for the 10,000m as well. Hays set the school record for the event at Raleigh Relays in March with a first place time of 32:21.13. Chmiel came fourth after clocking in at 32:55.19. The two will be joined in the 10k by Gionna Quarzo and Mariah Howlett, who are coming off First-Team and Second-Team All-ACC performances, respectively.

On the men's side of things, Gavin Gaynor has qualified to run in the 1500m. The graduate student is enjoying a successful 2023 campaign that saw him win the 1500m crown at Penn Relays with a time of 3:40.24. That time would stand as his personal best until he clocked in at 3:40.05 at the ACC Outdoor Championships last weekend during the event prelim to finish fifth.

The Pack then shifts from distance to sprints, as Ally Henson looks to build off of her Second-Team All-ACC time of 13.36 in the women's 110m hurdles.

Cam Murray will represent the Pack in the men's 110m hurdles. The Atlanta-native took home the individual ACC Championship for the event with a time of 13.46.

NC State will also have athletes competing in multiple field events. Jamar Davis will be taking part in the men's long jump and triple jump, while Jirah Sidberry will be the women's representative for the Pack in those events.

Sidberry's leaps will be her first since winning the ACC Championship in the women's long jump with a mark of 6.35m.

In the men's portion of the field events, Davis will be joined by Kyzaiah Stone, who is competing in the high jump. Davis (TJ) and Stone (HJ) are each coming into the regional with Second-Team All-ACC honors in their respective events.

Sorry for the quality of the video, but this was pretty cool to see.

Pretty cool video of an incoming NC State track athlete, Quentin Clarke of Cannon School in Charlotte, having a crazy comeback as the anchor leg in the 4x400m at his NCISAA Division 1 state meet. This is the division the big boys of private school ranks (that aren't competing in the public school sphere like a Cardinal Gibbons) compete in like Providence Day, Charlotte Catholic, Charlotte Latin, Christ School etc. Video should be linked to start just before he gets the baton in 3rd place, about 20 meters behind Providence day in 1st. No official splits that i've found, but looks like he split sub 47 for the leg, which is about a full 2 seconds faster than our best 400m runner this year at NC State so he should make a big impact on the track next year.

edit the timestamp isn't working, but fast forward to ~3:36 to get straight to anchor leg

time to own up to my predictions for our athletes. Some were pretty dang good. Some were awful in both directions. Some athletes were just complete unknowns. Starting with Throws, where i don't really fault myself. Here's what i said:

Throws/Multi's

HM: Nathan Lau - Only thrower on the roster and no Decathletes either. Lau isn't particularly close the being competitive in the ACC yet but his best events in high school were the DIscus and Hammer Throw which aren't offered in Indoors so perhaps his best is in front of him this season.

Lau focused on the Discus this Outdoor season. His new PB is 159' 0". Didn't really learn a lot about him this season as he's still a true freshman. Since our roster has a complete lack of other throwers have to hope he keeps working on his form and hits the weights this summer/fall to come back better and strong next winter.

time to own up to my predictions for our athletes. Some were pretty dang good. Some were awful in both directions. Some athletes were just complete unknowns. Next is Jumps. Here's what i said:

Jumps

Jamar Davis - Will compete in Long Jump and Triple Jump. Coming off a 3rd place finish at ACC's in the Long Jump, and 5th in Triple Jump and 7th in Long Jump in ACC last outdoor season. His Triple Jumping has been pretty stagnant since he set his PB in 2019 so that will be a good goal for him just to push back to his PB level. In the Long jump i'd have to think getting into the upper 25' territory and competing hard for an ACC title would be the goals.

Cameron Murray - Primarily a hurdler, but he will also compete in the Long Jump where he finished 4th in the ACC this past indoor season. Had a ridiculous PB last outdoors that was the 5th best jump in school history at 25' 7.5" and is a bit of an outlier in his jumping career. His goal here would be to score again at ACC's, show he can consistently jump 25'+, and push as close to that 26' barrier as he can.

Kyzaiah Stone - Will focus on the High Jump. Probably a little disappointed with his ACC's even though he's a freshman. Came in with a 7' 0.5' PB from high school and wasn't able to improve upon it in indoors and struggled to a 6th place finish below 7' at ACC's. I think just getting a new PB is the goal for him even if its only by a half inch.

Von Douglas - Health status unclear as he only jumped once indoors back in january, but he will compete in Long Jump as well as some sprints. 6th best outdoors jump in school history at 25' 1.75". Finished 12th at the 2022 NCAA indoors meet. I'd love to see him push closer to that mid 25' or higher barrier as well as qualify for nationals again.

HM: William Sistruck - Will compete in the Long Jump and maybe not in the same tier as the first 3, but he was able to finish 9th at this past ACC Indoors meet. Boasts a 23' 11.75" Long Jump PB.

Had a couple of athletes overshot, and a couple i undershot (to my good surprise).

Thought Jamar Davis had a better shot at the Long Jump than the Triple Jump this year based on not setting a new PB in the Triple Jump since 2019, but he came through strong at ACC's taking 4th in the Triple Jump (8th in the Long Jump) then qualifying for nationals in the Triple Jump, which he hasn't qualified for since 2019. So wrong on the event, right on the potential.

Cam Murray i was wrong on because he didn't compete in the Long Jump in outdoors. But for good reason as we'll see later on.

Kyzaiah Stone i was wrong on, and frankly was a little disappointed in his year but don't know if there were any extenuating factors. He was a 7' High Jumper in high school which had me unreasonably hyped, but he only hit that mark once in indoors and never in outdoors as he didn't qualify for nationals either season but he was able to score points at ACC's in 6th place both seasons.

Von Douglas wasn't able to qualify for nationals again, but was able to score points at ACC's so i'll count that as a wash.

William Sistruck had a poor day at ACC's in outdoors finishing in 15th, but this season he showed he has the ability to try to replace Jamar Davis and Von Douglas next year as he set a new PB with a 24' 4.25" jump in the long jump.

time to own up to my predictions for our athletes. Some were pretty dang good. Some were awful in both directions. Some athletes were just complete unknowns. Next is Sprints. Here's what i said:

Sprints/Hurdles

Alex Lang - Will compete in the 100 primarily. He really levelled up this past indoors season. He had never qualified for a national meet prior to this year and not only did he qualify in the 60 this indoors but he finished 6th setting PB's almost every race. With the amount he PB'd in the 60, he could be in for a massive 100 PB as well. He comes in with a best of 10.36 and best finish of 8th in the ACC. With his improvement i definitely think 10.2's is on the cards but who knows how fast he can go. Would love to see him push for a podium finish at ACC's and qualifying for nationals again.

Josh Brockman - Will compete in the 110 hurdles. He's finished 4th and 5th at the last two ACC's in the 110H but hasn't had an all american finish so coming off his great 5th place finish at the 60H at NCAA indoors another all american finish will be on his radar. He's already the school record holder in this event outdoors with a 13.55 but knowing the Cameron Murray is coming for it he's surely looking to dip lower. With his improvement in the 60m Hurdles this year i hope 13.4's are in the cards.

Cameron Murray - Will compete in the 110 hurdles. Will be highly motivated after his disappointing finish to an incredible season. Set a new school record in the 60H indoors and qualified 5th seed for nationals but DNF'd at ACC's and didn't have his best prelim at NCAA's to not qualify for the finals. He has the 3rd fastest time at the 110H hurdles in school history with a 13.7 and training and competing with Brockman can only help his push to get lower. After lowering his own school record in the 60H this indoors, i think big things are on the cards. I'm hoping he can dip into the 13.5's for sure as well as improving on his 21st place finish at last years NCAA outdoor meet.

Von Douglas - Focuses on the Long Jump but also runs the 200. Has run a great 21.07 in the past. If he can push sub 21 that puts him in scoring/All ACC range which will be the goal if he runs it.

Alexander Nunley - Will run the 100 and 200 primarily but has dabbled in the occasional 400 in the past. Has PB's of 10.59 in the 100 and 21.17 in the 200. The 200 has a lot of potential to be competitive with his time already and i'd love to see him in the 21.0's and if he can threaten 21 flat this year that would be gravy. Would have him pushing for scoring/all acc range similar to Douglas.

HM: Alan Alvarez - On the roster on Gopack, but didnt run this past indoors so unsure of his status. He's been a consistent ACC qualifier the past few seasons in the 100/200 but isn't really a threat to score there yet. I think time goals are probably more of his focus if he runs, dipping under 10.5 in the 100 and under maybe 21.1 in the 200.

Alex Lang had such a good indoor season i was just hoping he would go off in the 100 outdoors too, but it wasn't to be. Didn't get too close to his PB and seemed to struggle all season. I think he has 1 more covid year for both indoors and outdoors but no idea if he'd want to use it.

What i got wrong about Josh Brockman was that he would be saving this outdoor season to grad transfer to Florida. Bummer for NC State he's one of the two best hurdlers to ever come through school (along with Cam Murray). But he graduated with an NC State degree so you can't be too upset, he upheld his end of the scholarship giving us 4 years.

What i got wrong about Cam Murray was being way way way too conservative. I was thinking "wouldn't it be cool if he got into the 13.5's? Turns out he has run a 13.39 (into a massive headwind i might add) and won the entire region to qualify for nationals. An All-American finish would be icing on the cake for this great year he's had.

Not really going to think i got anything "wrong" with Von Douglas. He barely ran sprints this outdoor season and didn't over the last month of the regular season so there was no time to PB.

Alexander Nunley set new PB's in the 400 and the 400H but those weren't events he'd ever particulary focused on prior to this season. His 100 and 200 times didn't get that close to his PB's. Another one wrong here.

Alan Alvarez only ran at one event back in mid april so didn't really get anything wrong there.
