NC State men's golf has been on the rise over the past couple of years, winning seven events in the last two seasons. That run was put on hold after a disappointing regional performance last season, which saw the Wolfpack finish 12th. Now the Pack looks to continue to bring the men's golf program into the national spotlight.

The team has three returning seniors, Maximilian Steinlechner, Carter Graff and Brandon Einstein who look to lead the team to new heights. Steinlechner was one of two Wolfpack golfers to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship this summer at Ridgewood Golf Club in New Jersey. Originally from Innsbruck, Austria, Steinlechner led the team with a 71.07 scoring average last season.

Joining the team this year are standout freshman Michael La Sasso from Raleigh and freshman Joey Lenane from Dedham, Massachusetts. Just this past year, La Sasso took home the Carolinian Amateur at Keith Hills and made it to the final match of the NC Amateur. Lenane finished second place in the K.J. Choi Foundation Junior Championship in August of 2021, along with a top-10 finish at the Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational in October of 2021.

NC State men's golf starts season with uninspiring performance at Maui Jim Intercollegiate

https://www.technicianonline.com/sports/nc-state-men-s-golf-starts-season-with-uninspiring-performance-at-maui-jim-intercollegiate/article_e722e6dc-3220-11ed-8029-bf0486dafa1f.html

The NC State men's golf team started its season at the Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

The Pack finished dead last out of 18 schools at 15-over par, 60 strokes behind first-place Auburn.

Five members of the Wolfpack made the trip, but the best performances came from freshman Michael La Sasso and senior Brandon Einstein, who finished the weekend three strokes over par and tied for 65th place.

NC State's next two finished tied for 75th at 5-over par, namely junior Ethan Choi and senior Maximilian Steinlechner. Both had their strongest performance on the second day of tournament play. Choi and Steinlechner had something to build on as they consistently made pars, but neither made quite enough birdies to vault the Pack into a higher finish. Steinlechner finished the tournament tied for second in pars, making 40, while Choi made 34.

Junior Spencer Oxendine had the worst finish out of State's five this weekend, finishing in 85th at 9-over par. Oxendine's biggest problem this weekend was his performance on par 4s, finishing 8-over par and averaging 4.22 strokes per hole.

The Wolfpack struggled as a team mightily on Sunday, shooting 15-over par to fall seven strokes behind 17th-place UCLA. The team struggled on par 3s and 4s, finishing a combined 36 strokes over par. The Pack found success on par 5s, shooting 11-under par, but that didn't separate it from any other team this weekend as NC State possessed the fifth-worst score on par 5s among the 18 competitors.

Even though the Wolfpack didn't get the result it wanted, there are definitely some positives it can take out of its play. The Pack finished ninth as a team in pars by making 165. Unfortunately, the Pack just didn't make enough birdies, finishing second to last with only 47.

The high number of pars and low number of birdies resulted from State's inability to make putts. If the Pack can start to turn some of those two-putt pars into one-putt birdies, it will find success this season. There is still much golf to be played this season, and the Pack showed potential to perform.

The Wolfpack can look to bounce back at the Folds of Honor Collegiate from Sept. 26-28 in Grand Haven, Michigan.

NC State senior Maximilian Steinlechner finished in second place on the individual leaderboard and the Pack finished eighth as a team at the Folds of Honor Collegiate held at American Dunes Golf Club.

Steinlechner posted back-to-back rounds of three-under par 69 in the second and third rounds to finish 54 holes at five-under. He and Liberty's Jonathan Yaun went to a playoff to determine medalist honors. After both players had a par on the first playoff hole, Yaun chipped in for a birdie on the second playoff hole to win.

The runner-up finish is the ninth top-10 performance and third runner-up finish of Steinlechner's career.

Steinlechner was one of just nine players in the 90-competitor field to finish 54 holes under par.

As a team, NC State finished in eighth place out of 18 teams. After struggling in the first round, the Pack posted a score of even-par 288 in the second round, the second best team score of the day to move up the team leaderboard. On Wednesday, NC State shot a 293 to close in eighth place, six shots ahead of ACC counterpart Clemson and just one shot back of seventh-place Michigan State.

Illinois took home the team title with a 15-shot advantage over second-place Arizona.

Carter Graf finished in a tie for 31st place at eight-over par. The NC State senior got better every round as he shot a one-over par 73 on Tuesday before finishing with a two-under par 70 in the third round.

Spencer Oxendine was next for the Pack in 40th place, three shots back of Graf. Oxendine tied for Steinlechner for the top round by an NC State golfer in the first round with a one-over par 73.

Michael La Sasso finished in a tie for 46th place, two shots back of Oxendine. The NC State freshman shot an even-par 72 in the second round.

Ethan Choi rounded out the NC State lineup in 59th place. Choi bounced back from a tough opening round to post rounds of 74 and 76 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

NC State returns to action Saturday, Oct. 15 when it hosts the Wolfpack Intercollegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament features the first two rounds on Saturday before closing with 18 on Sunday.

NC State men's golf wrapped up its annual fall event at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Sunday with the Wolfpack finishing the weekend in a tie for second place alongside Lipscomb in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.

Chattanooga claimed the team championship with a three-round team score of 847 (-17). The Mocs' performance was led by Paul Conroy who tied the Lonnie Poole competitive course record with a score of 62 (-10) on Sunday. Conroy posted an impressive 54-hole score of 206 (-10) throughout the tournament's entirety.

NC State was led by senior Maximilian Steinlechner who finished in a tie for second place with UNCG's Nick Lyerly as an individual at 208 (-8) on the weekend. Carter Graf also earned a top-15 finish, following up his Saturday-afternoon 67 (-5) with a round of 75 (+3) on Sunday to put him at 215 (-1) for the tournament. NC State was one of just three teams to have multiple individuals finish under par on the weekend.

Brandon Einstien fired a final-round 71 (-1) on Sunday, finishing the week in a tie for 28th place.

Freshman Joey Lenane had an impressive showing as well for the Wolfpack, using a second-round 69 (-3) sandwiched between rounds of 77 (+5) and 76 (+4) to put himself in a tie for 33rd place.

Rounding out the NC State lineup was Spencer Oxendine who capped his weekend off with a round of four-under par 68 on Sunday to end the tournament in a tie for 50th place.

Four additional golfers competed as individual scores for the Wolfpack, with Ethan Choi leading the way amongst the group at 23rd place with a tournament score of 219 (+3). Jake Wiktor finished the week in a tie for 42nd place and a three-day score of 223 (+7), followed by sophomore Jake Herring posting a 12-over par tournament score of 228. Wrapping up the Wolfpack's individual roster was Nick Mathews who added a three-day total of 241 (+25).

Next up for the Wolfpack will be the Williams Cup hosted by North Carolina at the Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C. on October 21-23.

The NC State men's golf team keeps on rolling. Just one week after tying for second place at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, the red-and-white placed third out of 10 teams at the Williams Cup in Wilmington, North Carolina, its last event of the fall season.

Leading the Pack was senior Brandon Einstein, who finished in a tie for second place individually. Einstein's impressive performance played a big role in NC State's overall placement of third, but an overall solid showing from the entire team got it done in the three-day competition at Eagle Point Golf Club.

NC State finished with an overall score of 895, which was just two strokes below Houston, allowing the squad to scrape out a top-three finish. Above the Wolfpack were interstate opponents UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Chapel Hill, who placed well ahead of NC State.

Einstein finished with a final score of 214, and while the rest of the Pack wasn't far behind in terms of scoring, Einstein was the only golfer from NC State inside the top-10. Just six points behind him but eight places behind in the standings was senior Maximilian Steinlechner, who earned a score of 220 to earn a tie for 10th.

NC State's four remaining golfers also logged solid weekends, each of them contributing to NC State's placement.

Senior Carter Graf and junior Ethan Choi earned ties for 24th place and 33rd place, respectively, despite ending with just a three-point differential in their scores. Sophomore Jake Wiktor and freshman Joey Lenane rounded out the Wolfpack's lineup, placing in a tie for 54th and in 57th place, respectively.

With individual scores being so close, there was little to no margin for error in the competition. But with some consistent performances and placements from all its golfers, NC State was able to log a solid and encouraging outing in its final competition in the fall season.

The next action for NC State men's golf will come in February when the red-and-white will travel to Florida to compete in Florida State's Watersound Invitational.
