In a spectacular effort led by freshman right-handed pitcher Madison Inscoe, NC State softball captured its first conference win of the season with an 11-3 victory over Notre Dame.
Exactly one week after they notched a win over then-No. 12/14 Duke, the Fighting Irish (11-7, 1-3) returned to North Carolina for the first of three games against the Wolfpack (7-14, 1-3). NC State handled Notre Dame in style, recording its fourth mercy-rule win of the season to end the game in six innings.
"We just all believed in each other," said assistant coach Carson Shaner. "It didn't matter who was in the box we all knew they were gonna get the job done. We wanted to finish the game early, and that's what we did."

Inscoe was the star of the show, recording four strikeouts against the Fighting Irish. After Notre Dame logged three runs in the first two innings including one homer Inscoe didn't allow another run for the rest of the evening.
Despite giving up an early lead, NC State's luck turned around after graduate center fielder Rebecca Murray made a diving catch to cap Notre Dame's lead at three in the top of the second. Minutes later, freshman shortstop Makayla Marbury and freshman catcher Amanda Hasler registered back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the frame to put the Pack on the board.
NC State recorded a stunning seven runs in the third inning alone thanks in large part to a bases-loaded walk drawn by sophomore designated hitter Taylor Ensley and a three-run RBI double from freshman second baseman Nadia Sykes for four runs. Hasler logged her second homer of the game shortly thereafter to bring in Sykes and Marbury, giving the Pack a cushy 9-3 lead.

"Our two freshmen Madison Inscoe, Amanda Hasler stepped up," Shaner said. "They called their own pitches tonight, so it was great to see them compete defensively, and our bats were hot tonight. We just passed the bat, and everybody was hitting the ball. We all just believed each other."
The Fighting Irish never returned to seriously threaten NC State's chances at victory, and the fourth and fifth innings passed without incident. A slick double play quickly ended Notre Dame's chances at a comeback in the fourth inning, and Inscoe recorded her fourth and final strikeout of the game to close out the top of the fifth.
Despite a slight cooldown after its seven-run inning, the Wolfpack returned with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cement an early exit for Notre Dame. After graduate left fielder Katlyn Pavlick brought freshman pinch runner Gabi Wilson home with a single down the left field line, sophomore third baseman Hannah Goodwin secured NC State's mercy-rule win with a single, sending Murray to home plate for the final time.
"We hung with a great Virginia Tech team last weekend, and we were ready to try and take the series this weekend," Shaner said. "Sweep [the series], if we can that's our goal. We had some freshmen step up big tonight, and we're just super excited about what they're gonna do this year."
Due to inclement weather, Sunday's game against Notre Dame was pushed up to Saturday, March 11. The Wolfpack will return to Dail Softball Stadium tomorrow for a doubleheader against the Fighting Irish, with game two starting at 2 p.m. and game three starting at 4:30 p.m.

The NC State softball team picked up its first ACC win Friday night after defeating Notre Dame 11-3 in six innings.

The Fighting Irish started off with a bang as they scored two in the first to take an early lead over the Wolfpack. NC State was unable to get through the Irish defensive efforts and went three up, three down in the bottom half of the first.

Rachel Allen hit a homer on the first pitch of the second inning to increase the Irish lead to three. The inning was retired after graduate outfielder Rebecca Murray recorded a diving catch to record the final out.

The Wolfpack had a two out rally in the bottom of the second. With a 0-2 count, freshman MaKayla Marbury took a swing and hit it over the fence to put the Pack on the board. Immediately after, fellow freshman Amanda Hasler also found herself down in the count but drilled a ball over the fence to add another run to the board. NC State ended the inning trailing Notre Dame by one.

The Fighting Irish went scoreless in the top of the third, but the Wolfpack brought the heat in the bottom half.

Freshman Ellie Goins, Murray, and graduate Katlyn Pavlick all singled to get on base. With no outs and bases loaded, sophomore Hannah Goodwin hit an infield single and reached first on a fielder's choice Goins was tagged out at the plate. With the bases still loaded, sophomore Taylor Ensley was walked by Payton Tidd, bringing Murray home and tying the game three all. Freshman Nadia Sykes stepped into the box and with a full count, she doubled down the left line bringing Pavlick, Goodwin, and Ensley home.

The Wolfpack took a 6-3 lead and the Irish brought in a pitching in attempts to stop the scoring run but was unsuccessful. Marbury singled up the middle to get on base. With one out and two on, Hasler stepped back into the box and hit a no-brainer at the scoreboard to record a three run homer and her second home run of the evening. The Fighting Irish ended the Pack's scoring run after striking out Goins. NC State finished the third inning with six hits and seven runs to lead 9-3 over Notre Dame.

Notre Dame attempted to minimize the deficit, but the Pack's defense was unbeatable. After a pop up to Marbury at short-stop, Inscoe picked up her third strikeout of the evening. Macie Eck lined out to Marbury who threw it to Haislip at first to get the runner out and record a double play. The Wolfpack quickly ended the top half of the fourth inning and kept the lead.

Both teams remained scoreless through the top of the sixth. Freshman Gabi Wilson entered the game to pinch run for Madison Inscoe after she singled to left field. Murray singled down the right line and Pavlick singled down the left, bringing Wilson home, increasing the Wolfpack's lead to seven. Goodwin singled to short and Pavlick scored, ending the game 11-3 in the bottom of the sixth with two outs.

Inscoe pitched all six innings and recorded four strikeouts to pick up her fifth win of the season in the circle.

The Wolfpack softball team dropped the last two games of the series with Notre Dame Saturday afternoon.

The Pack advance to 7-17 on the season and 1-5 in ACC play.

NC State 2, Notre Dame 10 (6 inn.)
The Wolfpack looked to maintain the momentum from the night before. Redshirt-junior Aisha Weixlmann started in the circle and picked up the first out of the game after the Irish popped up to the circle. With bases loaded and one out, Weixlmann picked up her first strikeout of the day and second out of the inning. Despite bases being loaded, she struck out the next batter to end the inning. She threw 39 pitches in the top of the first to start the afternoon.

Graduate Rebecca Murray started the Pack's offensive efforts off with a single up the middle. She took second after freshman Nadia Sykes lined out to shortstop and was thrown out at first. Fellow freshman Amanda Hasler stepped into the box with two outs and one on base, but was unable to bring Murray home after being thrown out at first. The Fighting Irish continued to hold a 2-0 lead to end the first inning.

The Irish started the second inning with a walk and then Carlli Kloss reached on an error. After Leea Hanks singled up the middle and brought in one RBI, the Pack brought in a pitching change. Freshman Rylee Wyman entered the circle with one on and on the second pitch thrown, the Fighting Irish homered to take a 5-0 lead. Notre Dame finished the top half of the second with a 6-0 lead over the Pack, who was eager to get on the board.

Freshman MaKayla Marbury led off the bottom half of the second with a single up the middle and sophomore Hannah Goodwin attempted to get on base, but was thrown out at first after grounding it to the Irish third baseman. With one out and one on base, designated player Taylor Ensley stepped into the box and singled to the shortstop to get runners on the corners. Junior Haley Haislip attempted to bring one home, but the Irish recorded a double play to get both Ensley and Haislip out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third with two outs, graduate Katlyn Pavlick hit a first pitch bomb over the center field hall to get the Pack on the board and minimize the Irish lead.

NC State held the Irish scoreless through the top of the fifth and the bottom half allowed the Pack to minimize their lead. With one out, Haislip worked a 2-2 count and swung at the ninth pitch thrown her way. She drilled a ball over the right center field wall to minimize Notre Dame's lead to four and the homer was the second of her career.

The Irish matched the Pack's two homers on the day as Karina Gaskins hit her second of the game to lead by five once again. Wyman responded to the hit by striking out the next batter faced to bring up the first out of the game. The Irish managed to score two more runs to increase the lead to eight. NC State brought in its second pitching change of the game as freshman Wynne Gore entered the circle with two outs and one on base.

The Pack was unable to get it going in the bottom half of the sixth, ending the game in a run-rule win by the Irish.

NC State 1, Notre Dame 7
The series finale was a battle of defensive efforts as both teams had one win. The Irish had four batters step into the box, but the Pack stopped them from getting into scoring position. Notre Dame finished the top half of the first with one hit and one left on base.

The Pack had two outs when Sykes stepped into the box. She was walked by Payton Tidd and Hasler stepped up to the plate. Her first hit was a home run that went foul, forcing her back into the box. She struck out swinging, retiring the inning.

Both teams went scoreless until the top of the fourth when Joley Mitchell recorded a three run homer. The Pack quickly retired the top half of the inning after getting the next two batters out.

With one out and a 1-2 count, Hasler drilled a ball over the left field wall, just barely staying fair to get the Pack on the board. The homer was the third by the freshman in less than 24 hours, as she hit two in game one on Friday. The Irish got the next two out to end the Pack's attempts to minimize the lead more.

In the top of the fifth with one out, Notre Dame recorded back-to-back home runs to increase the lead to four. The Wolfpack infield had a quick meeting to regroup and got the next two Irish batters out.

The Fighting Irish added two more runs in the top of the seventh after back-to-back solo shots over the fence. After retiring the top half of the inning, the Pack took the box in attempts to minimize the Irish lead. Hasler was the first to step into the box and had 13 pitches thrown her way before being struck out by Tidd. The next two batters got out, ending the series finale.

Inscoe finished the day with seven innings in the circle and one strikeout. She tallied seven consecutive no hit innings (including four from Friday evening) on the weekend. Haislip led the defensive efforts with seven putouts, while Murray added four.
