NC State softball dropped both of its games on day one of the Candrea Classic hosted by Arizona.

Seven freshmen made an appearance on day one of the 2023 season, including pitchers Rylee Wyman, Madison Inscoe, and Wynne Gore.

NC State 6, Kansas 12
The Jayhawks (1-1) took a 4-0 lead to open the game, with the fifth batter hitting a home run to right center field.

The Pack tried to battle back, but the Jayhawks defense was hard to get through.

Freshman MaKayla Marbury recorded the Packs first hit of the morning when she singled to left center field in the bottom of the second.

Kansas led 11-0 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Pack found a weak spot in the outfield. Sophomore Taylor Ensley singled to left that scored two in the bottom of fifth to plate the Pack's first two runs of the day.

Junior Kaylee Lambrecht reached on an error in the outfield, which allowed two more runs to score and cut into the Jayhawks lead.

In her third at bat of the morning, senior Rebecca Murray doubled to left center, bringing Lambrecht across home plate. The Pack ended the inning with six runs.

The last time NC State scored six runs in an inning was against Louisville (4/3/22).

Redshirt-junior Aisha Weixlmann recorded five strikeouts in the final four innings for the Pack.

NC State 2, Long Beach State 4
The Beach (2-1) took a 4-0 lead, scoring in the third through fifth innings.

In the top of the sixth, the Pack recorded three quick outs with back-to-back assists from Ensley to end Beach's offensive appearance.

With one out, Murray reached on a fielders choice, bringing freshman Ellie Goins home and putting the Pack on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Right after Murray, Marburry doubled to right field, which scored freshman Gabi Wilson to score.

Inscoe recorded three strikeouts in her pitching debut for the Pack.

The Beach were led by Corissa Sweet and Jacquelyn Bickar. Sweet recorded three hits and Bickar recorded two hits and two runs.

The Wolfpack dropped both games on day two of the Candrea Classic hosted by Arizona.

NC State 4, Kansas 12 (5 innings)
The Wolfpack started the final meeting with the Jayhawks with momentum.

With the Pack batting first, Rebecca Murray and Kaylee Lambrecht both recorded a hit to open the game and get NC State on base. MaKayla Marbury was then hit by a pitch, forcing bases to be loaded with Madison Inscoe on deck. Inscoe drilled one into Kansas left fielder's glove, but Murray scored to give the Pack the early lead.

Sophomore Taylor Ensley singled to right center field, allowing Lambrecht to cross home and make it 2-0. Ensley then stole second and Hannah Goodwin singled to center field, bringing two across home plate.

The Pack ended the top of the first with a 4-0 lead over Kansas, with Goodwin leading the Pack with two RBI's.

Kansas found a spark in the bottom of the third, bringing in seven runs to take the lead over the Wolfpack. After Savanna DesRochers flew one out to Katlyn Pavlick's glove, Ashlyn Anderson hit a home run to right center field to start the Jayhawks scoring for the inning.

The Pack struggled to regain momentum after the Jayhawks took the lead. Play in game one ended in the bottom of the fifth after DesRochers drilled a ball past the center field fence to record a three-run homer.

NC State 1, Arizona 15 (5 innings)
The Pack looked to bounce back in game two of the afternoon, but fell short after Arizona took a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Goodwin slammed a ball to left field, falling just short of passing the fence, but it went over the foul line forcing her back to the batter's box.

In the top of the fifth, freshman Bailey Edwards slammed a ball to center field to record a double and bring Nadia Sykes across home to get the Pack on the board.

Arizona was led by Blaise Biringer and Allie Skaggs who combined for seven RBI's and three hits.

Next Up
The Pack will finish play at the Candrea Classic with a single game on Sunday Feb. 12 against Arizona. Play begins at 1:30pm EST at Mike Candrea Field at Hillenbrand Stadium.

NC State softball continues the search for its first official win in the early part of the regular season, falling to Kansas 12-4 and falling to Arizona 15-1 in day two of the Candrea Classic in Tucson, Arizona.

The Wolfpack (0-4) hasn't had a lot of luck down in the desert so far, falling to both the Jayhawks (3-2) and the Wildcats (4-0) in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 11. Both games ended in five innings.

The first game of the day was a rematch against Kansas, who the Pack lost to 12-6 the day prior. NC State struck first, securing a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI from freshman pitcher Madison Inscoe.

The Pack continued its offense with a single from sophomore shortstop Taylor Ensley. She later scored off yet another single from sophomore third baseman Hannah Goodwin, who brought in two runs and moved the score to 4-0 in just the first inning.

Kansas retaliated quickly with a run of its own in the first and picked up one more in the second before an offensive onslaught of seven runs in the third inning to raise the score to 9-4. Only one of those runs was off of a home run, but the Jayhawks had one more three-run homer to end the game early with a 12-4 tally.

Junior right hander Aisha Weixlmann was credited with the loss and was taken out in the middle of the third after allowing four earned runs. It was Weixlmann's first loss of the season but not her first appearance Weixlmann pitched four innings of the first matchup against Kansas on Friday. Inscoe would come in for relief, but her time was short-lived after allowing three earned runs in just six pitches.

After a tough loss, the Pack attempted to recover quickly to face Arizona; however, the Wildcats struck quickly and gained a seven-run lead in just the first two innings. Arizona continued to pour it on, gathering seven more unanswered runs over the next two innings. None of the Wildcats' runs were off of homers, and they collected 17 hits in a 15-1 victory.

The sole Wolfpack run of the later game was by freshman outfielder Bailey Edwards, who doubled into center in her first recorded plate appearance of the year. She had one of two hits for the Pack, the other of which came from Goodwin.

Freshman pitcher Rylee Wyman was credited with the loss, her third of the season. Her 18.53 ERA will likely be inflated for the next few starts because of these performances.

Goodwin ended the day a combined 2-5 at the plate, tallying two RBIs. Graduate center fielder Rebecca Murray went 3-3 against Kansas and continues to lead the team in batting average at .385, even though she didn't record a hit against the Wildcats.

The Wolfpack will continue the Candrea Classic with one last game against Arizona, who has won all four of its games by mercy rule, showing the Wildcats' dominance in the beginning of the season. NC State's hope will be to secure its first win, but it might have to wait until next weekend when the team returns to Raleigh.

NC State will host the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, playing Iowa and Purdue twice each. The event, starting Friday, Feb. 17 and ending Sunday, Feb. 19, will have the Pack play in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 18, similar to the Candrea Classic. The Challenge will kick off a 10-game homestand for the Pack.

NC State softball has a completely revamped roster for the 2023 season, with only nine of the 21 players on the roster returning from last season. Last year, the Pack finished with a solid 33-23 record but ended 7-17 in the ACC.

Thus far, the red-and-white has yet to win a game, going 0-5 in the Candrea Classic. The implications of these losses have yet to be determined with the team just getting the season started, but nonconference losses are not a pattern the Pack will look to continue. The home opener for NC State is on Fri. Feb. 17 against Iowa the first game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The spotlight this season will be on the younger core of this Wolfpack squad as it looks to keep NC State above .500 and fill the void left by the 11 players gone from last year.

Infielders

The Pack has an experienced group of infielders, with the only first-year player being freshman Nadia Sykes. This group is led by redshirt junior Libby Whittaker, a starter on first-base and the holder of last year's best batting average in ACC play with a .353 mark. Another standout at the plate is sophomore Michele Tarpey, who tallied four home runs last year and was third on the team in doubles with eight total.

Junior Kaylee Lambrecht has been the biggest source of consistency for the Pack, starting all 56 games last year and leading the team in at-bats, runs and stolen bases. The trio of Whittaker, Tarpey and Lambrecht, along with other veteran players, will be responsible for pacing the Wolfpack all season and showing the younger players the ropes.

Outfielders

The group of outfielders for the 2023 season are all fairly new outside of junior Gracie Roberts, who was not a full-time starter at the position last year. The Pack had two vets finish their respective collegiate careers last season in Carson Shaner and Brittany Jackson, both of whom started in the outfield for the majority of games last season.

NC State brought in two graduate student outfielders to fill the vacant spots, Katlyn Pavlick and Rebecca Murray. Both women bring experience the team sorely needs, with Pavlick playing four years at Pitt and Murray playing four years at Elon.

Pitchers/Catchers/Other

The Pack has three freshman pitchers all looking to make an impact on the team, and all three have made appearances early in the season. Madison Inscoe has shown versatility, playing first base against Arizona and recording three strikeouts against Long Beach State.

Rylee Wyman has made three appearances thus far and recorded a strikeout against Arizona; something Wynne Gore also achieved in the same game. Gore has played the most out of the three, but as the season goes on it looks like all three will be out on the field during most games at one point or another.

Here is a complete look at who the Pack lost, who returns and who joins in 2023:

Gone: Shaner, Jackson, Gress, Morris, Farricker, Allen, Sack, Johnson, Schmeiser, Chamberlain, McPherson

Returning: Haislip, Tarpey, Whittaker, Lambrecht, Weixlmann, Smith, Roberts, Lucero, Ensley

New: Sykes, Hasler, Gore, Goins, Wilson, Marbury, Inscoe, Wyman, Pavlick, Edwards, Goodwin, Murray

COLUMN: NC State softball: Breaking home run records, but not the scoreboard

With the spring sports season in full swing, NC State softball is ready to dust off the diamond and get to work after going 33-23 overall and 7-17 in the ACC in 2022.

What many casual fans might not realize is that NC State head coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift has an interesting method to the madness of scoring in softball: hit as many home runs as possible. Ultimately, this strategy leads to entertainment value of softball games being prioritized over actual scoring, or even winning, for that matter.

With the first five games of the 2023 season out of the way, the Pack has gone 0-5, so let's take a look at how the statistics have led to these losses so far. The team's batting average is a measly .178 compared to its opponents' .434, as the Wolfpack has scored 14 runs to its opponents' 58.

The first home run of the 2023 season can be attributed to freshman utility player Makayla Marbury. This first of hopefully many came in a five-inning, 15-1 loss to Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 12.

The 2022 season ended with a batting average of .260, but out of 359 total hits, 82 were home runs. This staggering number of tanks within the Wolfpack batters box absolutely dwarfs its opponents' number of 52. In addition, fifth-year infielder Logan Morris led the team with 14 homers by the end of the season.

The 2022 season was also highlighted by a specific game against UNC-Chapel Hill on March 26, when the team set a new program record for number of home runs within a game. The previous program record was eight home runs in 2013, but a grand total of nine home runs against the Tar Heels set a new target for the team to break through in 2023.

This mindset being preached within the training rooms and on the field should be something to celebrate, but it could be giving false hope to people watching. Hearing news of home runs always gets fans excited, but when the bombs don't translate to wins, it feels like they have no purpose. The past five seasons, excluding 2020, have led to mediocre win percentages, with no Wolfpack team achieving a win rate over .589. Over the same period, the Wolfpack has not trailed its opponents in home runs since 2017.

Scoring on homers doesn't guarantee a large amount of points unless the Pack can get runners on base. Hitting a grand slam, or even homers with multiple runners on base, can lead to a quick lead change over an opposing team, but strictly solo shots from NC State hitters won't cut it.

The Wolfpack softball team and coaching staff seem to only care about hitting the ball out of the park rather than making specific plays to win specific games. If NC State really wants to score a solid amount of runs per game, then it should reel back on swinging for the fences to ensure that runners can get on base and open scoring chances. Even if the team wanted to keep its home run mindset, trying to keep runners on base would allow them to score more points and hopefully win more games in the long run.

Some baseball and softball fans might argue that a higher-scoring team is more fun to watch than one that scores more home runs, but there should be a happy medium between the two. If a team is relying solely on solo shots, then the game gets repetitive and only one member of the team is able to shine.

Patrick-Swift and the softball coaching staff should stray from their "home run or no runs" mentality in order to save the team from another mediocre season. The excitement of hearing the bat crack and the players rushing to make it to the bases can be more entertaining than seeing ball after ball go over the fence.

The Wolfpack dropped its home opener to Iowa, 11-2, Friday evening at Dail Stadium for the teams first game of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.

After two delays due to weather, the first pitch of the meeting was thrown at 8:05pm.

Iowa got on the board first in the top of the first. Denali Loecker stepped up to the plate as the fourth batter in the Hawkeye's lineup. She drilled a ball past the center field wall to record a three run homer and give Iowa a 3-0 advantage.

The Pack responded in the bottom of the first when freshman Madison Inscoe reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the throw. Fellow freshman MaKayla Marburry advanced to third and senior Rebecca Murray scored to get NC State on the board.

The second and third innings went scoreless for both teams, but the top of the fourth brought in eight runs for the Hawkeyes to take an 11-1 advantage over the Pack.

In the bottom of the fourth with one out and two on base, Murray recorded a sacrifice fly. Katlyn Pavlick advanced to third and Taylor Ensley crossed home, but the Pack's efforts to minimize the Hawkeye's lead fell short.

Freshman Rylee Wyman recorded four strikeouts, the most in a game for her so far this season, in her three innings in the circle.

Next Up
The Pack returns to Dail on Saturday for a double header. Game one against Iowa is slated for 3pm and game two against Purdue is set for 5:30pm. Both games will be broadcast on ACCNX.

The NC State softball team split day two of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge -- after winning game one of the afternoon, NC State fell in game two.

NC State 3, Iowa 1 (8 inn.)
As the third batter in the Pack's lineup and two outs on the board, graduate Katlyn Pavlick slammed a ball past the center field wall to record her first home run. She put the Wolfpack on the board 1-0.

Iowa attempted to get on the board, but was unable to find a weak spot in the Pack defense. Sophomore Hannah Goodwin grabbed the first out in the bottom of the first with a diving catch over the foul line.

Goodwin continued to dominate in the box as she recorded her first multi-hit game wearing a Wolfpack jersey. She finished game one of the afternoon with two hits.

The two teams entered the seventh inning all tied up, 1-1. The Pack had four batters step up to the plate in the top of the inning, with Goodwin being hit by a pitch and the only one to reach base.

The Hawkeye's finished the seventh with one left on base and totaled nine hits on the afternoon. Due to neither team taking the lead in the seventh, the game went into extra innings.

To open the eighth inning, the Pack brought in two pinch hitters, both who got out on the catch. Rebecca Murray stepped up to the plate and singled to left field to get on base. She then stole second and MaKayla Marbury walked. Pavlick stepped up to the plate for her third at bat of the afternoon. She walked after reaching a full count and Madison Inscoe stepped up to the plate with bases loaded.

The freshman pitcher, who recorded her second start of the season in the circle, drilled a ball down the left line to bring Murray and Marbury across home. The Pack finished the top of the eighth with a 3-1 lead over the Hawkeyes.

Inscoe finished her afternoon in the circle with two strikeouts and recorded one hit with two RBI's from the plate.

The win snapped a six-game losing-streak for the Wolfpack and recorded the teams first win of the year.

NC State 0, Purdue 4
The Pack looked to build off the momentum from the first game of the afternoon.

The two teams went scoreless through the first, but the Boilermakers scored three in the top of the second.

In the top of the third, Anna Lonchar hit a solo home run to put the Boilermakers up 4-0.

Kaylee Lambrecht recorded the Pack's lone hit in game two in the bottom of the second when she doubled down the left line.

Redshirt-junior Aisha Weixlmann struck out four batters in her two innings in the circle. Freshman Rylee Wyman pitched the final four innings and recorded two strikeouts.

Next Up
The Pack will face Purdue for a second time on Sunday Feb. 18 at 12:30pm for the final game of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.
