RALEIGH NC State men's soccer hits the road for a Friday night matchup at Clemson to round out the regular-season slate. Kick off between the Wolfpack (6-5-4, 1-4-2 ACC) and the Tigers (9-5-1, 2-4-1 ACC) is set for 7 p.m. from Historic Riggs Field and will be aired live on ACCNX.

SERIES HISTORY (NC State trails 15-42-7)
Friday marks the 65th overall meeting between NC State and Clemson. The squads have played each other at least once every season since their first meeting in 1967.
The Wolfpack has one just one of its last 13 matches against the Tigers. In 2017, Kiefer's first season at the helm of the program, NC State upset then-No. 3 Clemson by a 1-0 score at home.
The Pack is 7-21-1 in matches played at Clemson. The team's last time beating the Tigers on their home field was Oct. 17, 2008.
NC State last faced off against Clemson on Sept. 10, 2021 for its ACC opener last season. The Wolfpack fell to the Tigers, who were ranked second nationally, by a 2-0 score despite matching the squad in total shots (13) and out-shooting Clemson 9-5 in the second half.

The NC State men's soccer team (6-6-4, 1-5-2 ACC) fell 3-0 to Clemson (10-5-1, 3-4-1 ACC) in its Friday night road match that rounded out the Pack's regular-season slate.

The loss marked the Wolfpack's first in three weeks, breaking a five-match point streak that NC State carried headed into the night.

Clemson got on the board in the 24th minute after drawing a penalty kick that Hamady Diop converted on. The Tigers added to their lead late in the first half with some quick ball movement that made it to Isaiah Easley at the near post for the knock in.

NC State held Clemson without another score for the first 38 minutes of the second half, but the Tigers added to their tally with a goal off a corner kick in the 82nd minute.

Both Junior Nare and Luke Hille got off shots on target, but Clemson goalkeeper Joseph Andema made the saves on both strikes.

NC State will begin postseason action with the first round of the 2022 ACC Men's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The finalized bracket and kick off times/television designations will be announced later Friday evening.

In the 2022 regular season finale, the NC State men's soccer team fell against the Clemson Tigers 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 28 after failing to get scoring opportunities against a stout Tiger defense.
The loss marks the close of a mediocre regular season for the Wolfpack (6-6-4, 2-5-1 ACC), which suffered another conference loss to the Tigers (10-5-1, 3-4-1 ACC).
The Tigers opened up the scoring in the 23rd minute with a penalty kick goal from Hamady Diop. Fouls were something the Wolfpack struggled with in this game as the officials had their whistles ready for this one, calling 15 fouls on each side through the full 90 minutes.

In addition to the foul calls, NC State accumulated three yellow cards in its final regular season game. The aggressive attitude of the Pack made it clear that it gave Clemson a fight, leaving everything on the field.
The second Clemson goal came in the 42nd minute by Isaiah Easley with assists from Nathan Richmond and Marco Garcia, allowing the Tigers to enter halftime with all of the momentum.

After the break, the pace of the game slowed as the Wolfpack continued to stall on offense, leading to the shutout. Clemson's third and final goal of the game came in the final 10 minutes of play. The score was the result of an own goal off a corner kick, with a Wolfpack defender in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Pack had little momentum at this point in the match, but the own goal put the game to rest, with NC State unable to rally the offense in the waning moments of the game.
With the loss ending the Pack's regular season, there are bright spots from the year that should carry over to 2023. This has been a very up and down season, but there are young players on the roster that are poised to become leaders of the team next year. In addition, there shouldn't be much roster turnover for the 2023 season, with 17 underclassmen currently on the roster.
Despite this, some key seniors and graduate students may have played their final game for the Wolfpack. Notably, graduate midfielder Conor Kelly left everything on the field and has been a key piece of the red-and-white this season.
While the regular season is over, it's possible NC State will see some postseason action. If this is the case, the Pack has improved its offensive production as the season has progressed, but NC State will have to play to its strengths, play good defense and take advantage of opportunities given by its opponents if the team is to advance in the postseason.

SERIES HISTORY (Pitt leads 3-4-1)

NC State men's soccer took 24th-ranked Pittsburgh to overtime in the first round of the 2022 ACC Tournament, but the Panthers controlled the extra 20 minutes to earn the 4-1 victory on Wednesday night.

Luke Hille scored the Pack's lone goal in the first half, his third of the season and ninth of his career. It marked the team's first goal scored in a true road game this season as Hille capitalized on an NC State set piece.

Pitt got on the board first in the 12th minute with a goal from Michael Sullivan. Filip Mirkovic sent a long ball from behind midfield to Lucas Rosa in the back right corner of the box, and Rosa caught it before it went out of play and sent a low cross in to Sullivan for the run-through finish from behind the Pack's back line.

The Wolfpack responded well following the Panthers' score, highlighted by Hille's tremendous effort on his 24th-minute goal. The sophomore kept it alive off a Conor Kelly corner, worked his way around a Pitt defender and turned for the goal that rolled into the bottom right of the net.

Pack's Effort Against Panthers Comes Up Short in ACC Tournament First Round
PITTSBURGH, Pa.

With the score at 1-1 for nearly two-thirds of regulation, NC State got a few additional looks that forced Panther keeper Joe van der Sar into three second-half saves. The Wolfpack also did a great job of preserving the stalemate in the first 90 minutes, as Lucas Hatsios made a pair of saves of his own and NC State's defenders slid in for multiple blocked shots.

After 65:20 of scoreless action that saw the game into extra time, Sullivan got his second of the night and the game winner in the 92nd minute. Hatsios made a diving save in the first minute of overtime, but Sullivan headed one in on the resulting corner with that delivery coming from Mirkovic.

Play continued in accordance with new NCAA soccer rules, and the teams played the entire 20 minutes of overtime with Pitt adding to its tally in the 106th and 110th minutes.

The Wolfpack fell to 6-7-4 on the season while Pittsburgh moved to 8-3-5 and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Will be interesting to see what move Boo makes here. George has struggled the past couple years but he has a young team in the toughest conference in the country. I could see this go either way.

Didn't coach have a top 10 recruiting class recently? If so, give him time to build. But if we aren't getting good talent, why hold on to him. Give some other young hotshot a chance. I thought the times had passed Tarantini by ( sorta like Geiger), but at least George could spring an upset or two every year. When the highlight of the season is a tie with Carolina where you actually blew a late lead, that's a problem.
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.
