this is a cut and paste of my post on another site, but a good primer on where we stand in gymnastics relative to making the NCAA regional (which we host this year). The short answer, we are in very good shape already, and we have 4 home meets in a row where if we get at least two really good scores, we can pretty much lock up our tournament bid with some meets to spare.

Great meet by the Pack in Texas on Saturday. Best road score of the year, and locks in another great score to our regional qualifying. I'd say that we already have 3 of our 6 scores that we need to get in the NCAA regional, and there are still 7 meets to go. Very impressed by how well the team is doing under the new coach. Now we have four home meets in a row, and if we can perform anything like we did in the first home meet (196+), we can shoot up the rankings. As it stands now, we are #29 in the nation based on meet average, and that is with only one home meet so far. I believe next week, we will get our first ranking based on regional qualifying score, and that will give us a much better perspective of where we stand. Keep in mind that the regional meets are each 6 teams, and seeds are based solely on ranking. The top 2 teams of the six would advance to nationals (something NC State has only done once). As it stands now, we'd be in the #25-30 group making us a 5 seed, and needing to outperform 3 of the top 4 seeds to advance. Ideally, we can move up into the 3 or 4 seed range, but first things first, let's get back to the tournament.

With 6 meets in the book, we officially have our first regional qualifying score. Looking at the current RQS of 195.005, we are already above what we finished at last year for the whole year (194.820). Also just for reference, 195.005 would have finished #43 in 2016 and 2017. Meaning that we still have work to do, but on the other hand, we are already getting close to hitting the cut line for the NCAA already. And just for reference, if it doesn't make sense, our RQS can never fall below 195.005. Bad scores from here on out get ignored, and good scores improve it. So our minimum goal for the next meet is to at least beat 194.025

Here is where we stand. Time to start pushing some of the low scores out.
Home #1: 196.350 (vs W&M/Ball State/Jan 20)
Home #2: 194.600 (at Pitt Meet)
Home #3: 194.025 (at Ill-Chicago)
Road #1: 195.925 (in TWU Quad Meet)
Road #2: 195.825 (in Dallas Quad Meet)
Road #3: 194.650 (at UNC)

Drop: 196.350
RQS: 195.005
7 meets left (4 at home)

Note: To qualify for the NCAA, we have to be a top 36 squad based on our regional qualifying score. Best 6 meets, 3 of which must be away from home, drop the best, and average the rest. Last year, the #36 team was 195.420. In 2016, the #36 team was 195.385

A reasonable goal is 195+ on the road, 195.5+ at home. A great score would be 195.5 on the road, 196+ at home.

I took my daughter who competes on a national level. We had a blast. The Pack girls were very good tonight. We started off very strong on vault. Went to bars and I think had our best bar rotation of the year. Beam was good, got 9.9x on beam. We were leading going into the last event of floor and I think we fell apart. You ours see the faces on the last three girls on floor. They looked nervous despite being loose all night. Michigan is a really good team. No shame losing a tight one to them. Oh and the best part, we beat the cheaters!

Another great meet for the Pack. 10th best score in school history, and almost knocking off #6 Michigan. This team continues to impress. Current national rankings are still based on overall average (last year in week 7, it switched to rank by regional qualifying score, but this year, it's still by generic average...I expect next week to be by RQS). In the national rankings, we sit at #27. I would have expected it to be even higher. It will be interesting to see where we fall based on RQS next week.

Our regional qualifying score is already up to 195.470. That is significant because that score would have gotten us into the NCAA regionals in each of the last three years. It would have been #34, #34, and #32 in the past three years. So if historical trends hold, which is of course not guaranteed, we have essentially already clinched our spot in the NCAA regionals. And furthermore, we have proven that we were probably one more routine away from knocking off a top ten team at home, which since we are hosting regionals this year, shows that we have the potential if it all comes together on the right day, to finish top two in a regional, and go to nationals.

That being said though, there are six meets to go and a lot of goals to accomplish. One would be to reclaim the EAGL conference crown (we are currently ranked 2nd in the EAGL behind GW). And to improve our seeding for nationals so that we have less highly ranked teams to knock off in regionals when we do get there.

Here is where we stand. Now note that to improve our score this week, we need at minimum to beat the 194.600 that is sitting in our home #3 slot:

Home #1: 196.575 (vs Mich/UNC/Feb17)
Home #2: 196.350 (vs W&M/Ball State/Jan 20)
Home #3: 194.600 (at Pitt Meet)
Road #1: 195.925 (in TWU Quad Meet)
Road #2: 195.825 (in Dallas Quad Meet)
Road #3: 194.650 (at UNC)

Drop: 196.575
RQS: 195.470
6 meets left (3 at home)

Note: To qualify for the NCAA, we have to be a top 36 squad based on our regional qualifying score. Best 6 meets, 3 of which must be away from home, drop the best, and average the rest. Last year, the #36 team was 195.420. In 2016, the #36 team was 195.385

I realized I didn't update since last week, so here it is late.

The Pack with a not perfect, but still very good meet on Saturday of 195.725. And finally the rankings based on regional qualifying score have come out and put us at #22 this week. That would put us as a #4 seed in the regional with three top-18 teams in the meet as well. From that spot, we'd have to knock off two top 18 teams to make nationals (which we've only done once in school history). If we can bump up to top 18, then we can lock into a three seed, and essentially only have to outperform one top team to advance. That's for down the road, but the good news is that we are in very good shape at this point in the year.

Now for the next two home meets, we are in the comfortable position of knowing that we don't have the pressure of having to put up a good score, because we have some in the bank. We can just go for it and try to put up big number. In terms of rankings, the only way to move up this week is to top our 195.725. Anything lower will be dropped. Honestly, that a hard baseline to beat. But that's just a sign of how well we are doing this season. Hopefully we can keep improving and put up a great score Friday night.

Here is where we stand. Now note that to improve our score this week, we need at minimum to beat the 195.725 that is sitting in our home #3 slot:
Home #1: 196.575 (vs Mich/UNC/Feb17)
Home #2: 196.350 (vs W&M/Ball State/Jan 20)
Home #3: 195.725 (vs W&M/Feb 24)

Road #1: 195.925 (in TWU Quad Meet)
Road #2: 195.825 (in Dallas Quad Meet)
Road #3: 194.650 (at UNC)

Drop: 196.575
RQS: 195.695

5 meets left (2 at home)

Note: To qualify for the NCAA, we have to be a top 36 squad based on our regional qualifying score. Best 6 meets, 3 of which must be away from home, drop the best, and average the rest. Last year, the #36 team was 195.420. In 2016, the #36 team was 195.385

When you're home scores are already at or close to 196, it's hard to get a lot of bump in the rankings. Our 196.075 did improve our regional qualifying score (which is what the rankings are based on), but only by a little, and thus, some other teams jumped us. We currently sit #24.

This weekend, we have a home meet on Friday and a road meet on Sunday. The home meet has to be above 196.075 just to get any improvement, but the road meet has a change to give us a nice bump, as we can drop that 194.650. Ideally for our last home meet, you'd like to see our highest score of the season. That's a big ask, but would certainly help. Then if we could throw in a really strong road meet, we could see us inch towards the top 20.

Top 18, and a 3 seed in the NCAA is going to take multiple strong meets, but holding on to Top 24 and a 4 seed, is very doable, and probably the goal going into the stretch run.

Here is where we stand. Now note that to improve our score Friday, we need at minimum to beat the 196.075 that is sitting in our home #3 slot, To improve our score on Sunday, we need to beat 194.650. And obviously anything close to 196 on the road would give us a really nice bump:

Home #1: 196.575 (vs Mich/UNC/Feb17)
Home #2: 196.350 (vs W&M/Ball State/Jan 20)
Home #3: 196.075 (vs New Hampshire)
Road #1: 195.925 (in TWU Quad Meet)
Road #2: 195.825 (in Dallas Quad Meet)
Road #3: 194.650 (at UNC)

Drop: 196.575
RQS: 195.765

4 meets left (1 at home)

Note: To qualify for the NCAA, we have to be a top 36 squad based on our regional qualifying score. Best 6 meets, 3 of which must be away from home, drop the best, and average the rest. Last year, the #36 team was 195.420. In 2016, the #36 team was 195.385. Currently the cut line is already 195.315. It would appear that the cut line will be higher than in the past three years. But I don't think we are in any danger of making the field. We just want to keep working on our seeding, and staying top 24 will keep us as a 4 seed.
