When you're home scores are already at or close to 196, it's hard to get a lot of bump in the rankings. Our 196.075 did improve our regional qualifying score (which is what the rankings are based on), but only by a little, and thus, some other teams jumped us. We currently sit #24.

This weekend, we have a home meet on Friday and a road meet on Sunday. The home meet has to be above 196.075 just to get any improvement, but the road meet has a change to give us a nice bump, as we can drop that 194.650. Ideally for our last home meet, you'd like to see our highest score of the season. That's a big ask, but would certainly help. Then if we could throw in a really strong road meet, we could see us inch towards the top 20.

Top 18, and a 3 seed in the NCAA is going to take multiple strong meets, but holding on to Top 24 and a 4 seed, is very doable, and probably the goal going into the stretch run.

Here is where we stand. Now note that to improve our score Friday, we need at minimum to beat the 196.075 that is sitting in our home #3 slot, To improve our score on Sunday, we need to beat 194.650. And obviously anything close to 196 on the road would give us a really nice bump:

Home #1: 196.575 (vs Mich/UNC/Feb17)
Home #2: 196.350 (vs W&M/Ball State/Jan 20)
Home #3: 196.075 (vs New Hampshire)
Road #1: 195.925 (in TWU Quad Meet)
Road #2: 195.825 (in Dallas Quad Meet)
Road #3: 194.650 (at UNC)

Drop: 196.575
RQS: 195.765

4 meets left (1 at home)

Note: To qualify for the NCAA, we have to be a top 36 squad based on our regional qualifying score. Best 6 meets, 3 of which must be away from home, drop the best, and average the rest. Last year, the #36 team was 195.420. In 2016, the #36 team was 195.385. Currently the cut line is already 195.315. It would appear that the cut line will be higher than in the past three years. But I don't think we are in any danger of making the field. We just want to keep working on our seeding, and staying top 24 will keep us as a 4 seed.

dj, how does the postseason work for Gymnastics? Your comments about the team earning a 3 seed or 4 seed makes me wonder if the teams compete one-on-one with other teams like a basketball tourney? I guess I was assuming we would be in a large competition with the judging of all teams and the best scores are ranked. My expectation was more like a track meet than a basketball tourney. How is this done for Gymnastics?

PackFansXL,

Here is how the postseason works for gymnastics. There are 36 teams that make the NCAAs. They are divided into 6 regions. Those regions will each have one 6 team meet. In the meet, the top 2 teams advance to nationals, which is a 12 team event. The 12 team event, I believe is two 6 team meets that act as a semifinals, and then the top 6 teams compete in a championship. Don't quote me on what happens once you get down to 12 because we've only been there once, and I haven't really followed exactly what they do.

Anyway, back to regionals, teams are bracketed based on regional qualifying score, like this. I'll use the actual regional names as an example.

Penn State - #1, #12, #13, a 4 seed, a 5 seed, a 6 seed
Columbus, OH - #2, #11, #14, a 4 seed, a 5 seed, a 6 seed
Raleigh - #3, #10, #15, a 4 seed, a 5 seed, a 6 seed
Salt Lake City - #4, #9, #16, a 4 seed, a 5 seed, a 6 seed
Minneapolis - #5, #8, #17, a 4 seed, a 5 seed, a 6 seed
Tuscaloosa - #6, #7, #18, a 4 seed, a 5 seed, a 6 seed

edit: If you read what I wrote 10 minutes ago, I was wrong, so I deleted it...this is updated...

The 4, 5, and 6 seeds are placed completely based on geography. So, there really is no difference between being 24 or 25. I thought they grouped the 4 seeds as 19-24, 5 seeds as 25-30, 6 seeds as 31-36, but that isn't the case.

So I'm wrong about 4 seed and 5 seed. The only thing that matters is top 18, and then geography.

If I was bracketing right now for the Raleigh regional, we would get 3 of the protected seeds, like 3-10-15. But the other three seeds would be up the in air. #20 Georgia, #23 NC State, and #28 Maryland is possible. However, Maryland is closer to Penn State, and Georgia is closer to Tuscaloosa. Plus there are very few West Coast options.
Salt Lake would probably get #19 BYU, #30 Southern Utah, and Utah State if they sneak into the top 36.

We could end up with #23 NC State, #27 Stanford, and UNC if they sneak into top 36.

But like I said, I thought those 4, 5, and 6 seeds had to be chosen from a certain ranking group, but last year it was just anyone between 19-36 for that group.

dj, thanks for the explanation. If State is not in the top 18, does the geography selection criteria prevent or prefer our inclusion in the Raleigh regional?

ETA: So, from your edit, it appears we would be preferred in our own regional. Correct?
dj5377
How long do you want to ignore this user?
We will always get the Raleigh regional. It's not like basketball where they keep us purposely away from home court. In Gymnastics, as long as you are top 36, you are getting to stay home.
dj5377
How long do you want to ignore this user?
also, I know I'm not crazy....as of 2016, they did group the 4 seeds 19-24, 5 seeds 25-30, and 6 seeds 31-36. I guess they changed it in 2017...

Given our current RQS, we are solidly in and will be effectively hosting on our turf. To advance we must finish in the top 2 of the six at our site. Interesting approach ...

Thanks again!
dj5377
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's certainly not easy. Last year the only non top 12 teams that advanced were #13 advance in the region with #1 and #12, and #14 advanced in the region with #2 and #11.

The year before, the #14 advanced over #11, and the #18 advanced in the 6-7-18 bracket. In 2015, all 12 of the top 12 seeds advanced.

So it's certainly difficult to jump into that group. On the other hand, just a quick look back, the last time we were in the regional in 2015, the second spot was claimed with a 196.750. So if we had put up a 196.800 like we did last weekend in that regional, we would have advanced. That is the type of score that can make it happen.

A quick look at NCAA possibilities. Of the 6 regionals, only 2 of them have a team that is ranked in the top 18. So not many home venue advantages.

Utah is #4, so if that holds, they will be the 4,9,16 region.
Alabama is #6, so they would get the 6,7,18 region.
That leaves the rest as a toss up for the Ohio State, Minnesota, NC State and Penn State regions.

The interesting part is that we are the only southern region out of that group, so you would think that we would probably get a SEC school. Also most of the teams 19-36 are not southern schools, so no natural fits for the Tuscaloosa region. I doubt that #34, #35, and #36 go to the same region, but based purely on geography placement in order from 19-36 yields this... My first guess at regionals:

Minneapolis: #1 Oklahoma, #12 Oregon State, #13 Denver
Raleigh: #2 LSU, #11 Arkansas, #14 Nebraska
Columbus: #3 UCLA, #10 Cal, #15 Boise State
Salt Lake: #4 Utah, #9 Kentucky, #16 Auburn
Penn State: #5 Florida, #8 Washington, #17 Arizona State
Tuscaloosa: #6 Alabama, #7 Michigan, #18 Georgia

Then they will fill in 3 more teams per region, geographically.
Minn: #21 Missouri, #23 Minnesota, #26 Iowa State
Raleigh: #22 NC State, #29 Maryland, #33 Pitt
Columbus: #24 Ohio State, #27 Illinois, #32 Kent State
Salt Lake: #20 BYU, #30 Stanford, #31 Southern Utah
Penn State: #19 GW, #25 West Virginia, #28 Penn State
Tuscaloosa: #34 New Hampshire, #35 Central Michigan, #36 Iowa

If you were to group teams by 19-24, 25-30, and 31-36, the Raleigh, Columbus, and Salt Lake regions seeded naturally. Minnesota got an extra 4 seed, and no 6 seed. Penn State got an extra 5 seed, and no 6 seed. Alabama got all 6th seeds. Not sure if they would let that happen, but who knows.
