I think the other side of NIL is also starting to show. While schools keep players with insane NIL deals (UNC, Miami, etc) you will see schools push NIL deals to players to get players to stay away from certain schools. Just like free agency in pro sports. Make an insane offer to a player to push the price tag of a player up and there by push a rival out of the bidding war. Until the NCAA puts a cap on NIL deals tied to inflation/COLA, creates a minimum length of service to a school (say 3 years or the player has to pay back the NIL if he wants to leave earlier), this crap is going to continue to be out of control. The non-blue blood schools will be feeder schools to the blue bloods, g-league, OTE and NBA. College basketball will be on a death spiral. If nothing is done, at that point the non-blue blood schools will be better off turning their basketball program into a subsidiary run like a pro team and get a license fee for using the schools name and brand. Players signed through mega deals, they can attend the university or not, contractually obligated to play for a set period of time and can be cut at any time just like the pro's.

Can anyone identify a single area of running a program in which he is thriving, demonstrating excellence?
He is very good at identifying talent and developing players (at least the ones who stick around). That's all I got.

I understand the sentiment, which is why the NCAA should have let the schools start paying players directly and held them to a salary cap. It would likely have kept the lawsuits for NIL at bay for a while. But, with NIL the NCAA has no say what so ever in how it is managed or executed - this opened up as a result of a court ruling, not some NCAA decision. Any attempts to restrict or control this could be viewed as violating the courts decision, so I imagine they will stay out of it.

Thanks I knew about the court decision but didn't realize it took it completely out of the NCAA's hands. If it continues to be unregulated in any meaningful way it really is the end of college sports and you are looking at a semi-pro league.

The NCAA's best weapon to try to regulate this is to get rid of the No sit transfer rule. Would keep kids from leaving just to try to secure a better nil deal.

Yeah i agree with that too.

I'm just hoping the big guy can set some hard ass screens, know how to handle the pick & roll and not be afraid to commit some hard fouls. Feels like forever since we've had a center or PF with a mean streak.

For those who don't want to follow the link, not in final 6 for Council.

Disappointing. Definitely didn't like having our hopes ride on KK convincing a kid, that is probably doing the right thing for himself personally by staying away from this area/Durham, to come back home and play for us.

Wow, would definitely take! Shot almost 39% from 3 on almost 6 attempts per game last year. Career 38.5% 3p shooter. About 6 rebounds per game.

Anothee kid we're gonna claim is not ACC caliber in a few months lol

Seems like we just do the same **** over and over again and expect different results.

Yep. Nolley was a huge miss. Going to be difficult to attract someone as talented from the portal.

He's not even good at developing players though. Majority of our guys that stick around did not show much or any improvement under Keatts. Only guys that he seemed to really "develop" to me were Daniels and Bates.

Many more examples of players staying stagnant or only showing marginal at best improvements year to year. Hellems, Beverly, Markell, Funderburk, Hayes, Allen, etc.

Seabron? Went from 5ppg to 17ppg. ACC Most Improved Player. CJ Bryce and Markell Johnson are two other guys that improved statistically season to season. And I would say Hellems developed over the course of his career at State:

5ppg, 32% from 3
10ppg, 33% from 3
13ppg, 38% from 3
14ppg, 39% from 3

If you think Hellems developed well then idk what to tell you. Shooting more shots per game doesn't equate to developing.

He went from a role player off the bench to a double digit scorer/starter and one of the better 3pt shooters in the ACC. If you can't see that Hellems improved drastically from his freshman year to his senior year, then idk what to tell you.
wolf01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hellems definitely got better, but guys have ceilings too. He had slow feet, a slow release and athletic limitations.
Seabron should be a huge feather in KK's cap
Markell improved
Bates improved a lot and if he's healthy you'll see that at Butler this year
Funderburk improved his post game substantially - yes, it was underutilized, but it developed
Devon Daniels got a lot better
Bryce improved

Beverly had a ceiling, physical limitations coupled with injuries, not sure what to say there
Cam Hayes' game fell apart this year. So, I would say he's gotten worse

Not going to address any 1 year guys, because some played better simply because of our offense and some didn't. So, it's really hard to tie that to the coach from an individual developmental stand point, which is all I'm addressing. Other factors, such as team coaching, roster management and bringing in the right guys for the system are clearly areas for improvement for KK. I know everyone seems to be trying to bash KK over every aspect of the team/program, but it was asked what he does well and I firmly believe he does a good job developing individual skills and has a very good eye for talent.

KK has an eye for talent and there are a ton of examples of his talent development going back to Louisville.

His issue is getting talent on campus.

DJ Burns - 6'10" and 275 lbs, Big South Player of the Year. That is a good pick-up. Go get at shooter and call it a day while you wait to see what Smith and Seabron do. Front court is set with Ebe, Duhsan, Ross, & Burns.

You can add Gantt to that list though he may be more of a 3-4 hybrid. I think Ross and Gantt(assuming both are healthy) get the majority of the minutes at the 4

Not sure, I assumed that to be the case but who knows. I feel like theres a lot of mystery around his injury for some reason
