I'm sitting out on my back porch taking in the evening sounds. That includes neighbors two doors down who have the music cranked up and I can hear her singing "nine to five". Great American life story.

I remember when she got her own variety show for maybe a couple of years (had to be sometime in the mid 70's)... show began with her swinging in some kind of dolled up chair swing, ended with her signing a portion of her most famous song. That was a long time ago. She accomplished many amazing things over the years...

The best part was the comedian Gallagher opened up for both. We we sitting by on of the entrance upstairs and Kenny Roger actually came out to "Lady" about 3 feet from me. Thought I was going to have to tackle my ex wife. Round catwalk stage on the floor, band in the pit below

I was blessed enough to see her twice. Once in the late 60's with Porter Wagner at Goldsboro High School, the other was in 1986 at Reynolds Col. with Kenny Rogers. Amazing talent and even better person.

Glass, I think I was at the show as well. I remember seeing Kenny Rogers at Reynolds and I think it was Dolly. Now, I know that Dottie West and Crystal Gayle performed with Kenny in Reynolds, in the same time-frame.

BTW, Reynolds was never a great venue for music. I saw Loverboy, Eddie Murphy, Rush and others at Reynolds. Also, I saw Porter Wagner at the Grand Ole Oprey in one of (if not) last performance at that great venue.

She was often there for the troops, too, sending them off and in-theater visits for the USO and in her own capacity. She was a major supporter of The Boot campaign.

Dolly was/is an absolute Legend.

One of a kind for sure!

Maybe this isn't the place for this commentary but it's crossed my mind that as the world shrinks with the rise of social media, the internet, and everyone having access to all corners of the globe on demand in the convenience of their own pocket - we are gradually (or rapidly) losing distinctions of subset cultures within our icons.

I don't know if I worded that right, but what I'm getting at is that because we are all so connected - cultures and dialects and everything starts to melt together. When Dolly grew up in east Tennessee she was shaped and formed by what was around her - which back then would have been a very small sliver of the world. If she were born today in that same area she'd have access to every walk of life and dialect around the world from the time someone came along and put a iphone or ipad in her hand.

I feel like it wasn't that long ago when you heard someone talk or sing you could tell - ok that person is from California, or New York, or the south or the midwest etc. I don't know that it's always as obvious anymore as the world shrinks.

Not saying it's good or bad, just something that I've thought about randomly and Dolly is a fantastic representation of being associated with a region. I don't know if that dynamic will be commonplace in the future.

My social media algo-rhythms have been flooding me with Dolly clips from over the years. She was the best. She was the life of the party, never came off like she took herself too serious and showed love and acceptance for all people from all walks of life. Rare to find someone universally loved like her. And through it all she stayed true to herself and her roots.
