Well, today was the day. Kiwi went peacefully with myself and my wife there with her. She's in a better place and I couldn't be more grateful for having her be a part of my life.

Thank you for all the kind words and my heart goes out to everyone that has gone through this.

Maybe this thread can stay around, but not necessarily as a remembrance of pets folks have lost. love seeing pics of other peoples' pets, whether they're still with us or not. The water cooler could use a little more lightheartedness.

I don't have the words, other than my thoughts go out to you and your wife. We had to put our dog down about 8 years ago. It was very hard, at the time the girlfriend and I, ( now wife ) got the dog at the SPCA. She was apart of our life from the beginning, and in some ways went through everything we did as the wife and I got our lives going. Our current dog is getting older and is also a part of our lives.

So sorry that you had to go through this. Thank you so much for sharing her picture and her story with us. Her image that you posted here and the love that you and your family had for her will always be with those of us here that read your story... as will the thoughts of all the other beloved animals that were mentioned here by others.

I can't even begin to imagine what it will be like for my wife and I whenever it is time for Charlie to go.

Even though my Bichon is only 6 years old, I can't even imagine what I would do that day. I am so sorry for losing a part of your family.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

So my son handles explosive sniffing dogs. He has 2. A 7 year old German Shepard and a 2 year Belgian Malinois. He just moved back from Houston (worked the airport there) and has accepted a training position with a K9 company in the Marshall Islands. He's selling his Malinois but I asked him about his German Shepard and whether he was taking him with him. Maco is his name and he's been retired for about a year. My son said no that his health was failing fast. He had a cancer scare 4 years ago. Doesn't look like he's going to survive through next month. He's a great dog and a good friend to my son.

Dogs are special, I wish I could be a little more like them....love unconditionally no matter what.

We have 6 total but my bluetick sticks with me no matter what. Had Covid a few weeks back and she stayed on the couch with me.

This is our other pup, Raleigh. She looks like a designer dog, but she's a rescue as that's the only kind of dog I will allow us to have. She's a huge PITA, eats everything (including tin cans), and basically is a cute furry terrorist…But we love her anyway and wouldn't change a thing about her.

He seems pretty upset. He's had to accept the fact that he won't make it but he tries to make him as comfortable as possible until his hand is forced. he won't let him suffer I know.

that little black&white one is the destructive one. She is a costly little cuss. the one to the far left and far right I can leave in the house all day and they wont tear anything up. The 2nd to the left, he is the biggest but still a puppy, he also tears up stuff just not as bas as the black&white one

names are Bonnie, Rambo, Baby, and Duke.

And yes Duke's name is sorta related to our rival in Durham. His name was Duo when I got him at the animal shelter, so I kinda needed a name close to that...but also, I wanted to pay tribute to a former dog of my uncle and her name was Patty. The reason my uncle named her Patty was that since she was a female he couldnt name her Duke, and yes he is a huge Duke fan, so he cleverly named her Patty because 'Duke' is the next name that comes to mind for most thanks to Patty Duke. So, I renamed Duo, Duke in a tribute to my uncle's old dog Patty.

If I couldn't know anything about you, and couldn't possibly understand how you think and view anything else, I feel confident that I know how you see/feel things at this moment. It's been nearly a decade since my black Labrador, Oscar, needed relief from the cancer afflicting him. I've lost human relatives that didn't grieve me that much. We had a good run for a dozen years. The memories of those years still enter my dreams sometimes.

My son had to put his German shepherd down today. He told me yesterday he basically had a version of ALS for dogs.

A neighbor's dog has that. Unfortunately for him, the time is coming soon also as the pup already lost use of his hind legs and his front leges are starting to go. Such a sweet dog.

The owner bought him a dog wheel chair that allows him to walk his dog, and for the pup to use just his front legs to get exercise.

Man, I got teary eyed reading this thread. Dogs are the best and mine has gotten me through some dark times personally. He's a doodle and about to turn 6.

Getting choked up just thinking about when that time comes. Sorry for the ones that have lost their furry friends.

Cherish every moment dude. My wife read me a quote when I was basically having a breakdown when we made the decision.

They're your best friend for a few years if you're lucky. You're their best friend for their entire lives.

I had no clue this was a thing. I've seen hundreds of dogs with the wheel assist for their back legs. Seems like Kirk Herbstreit's dog Ben may have something similar.
