Social media is never a good indicator of the majority opinion. The dummies are always the loudest in those forums.

Most reasonable people I've heard speak about it think it was handled appropriately, and I agree. Not something that should lead to being fired, but certainly punishable.

The first amendment applies to states. Bob Huggins is employed by a State University. There are plenty of protections for the free speech rights of government employees, as there should be.

Whether you are arguing the law or not, the censorious instinct to want other people punished for words you don't like is an ugly one that erodes social trust.

Remember when Alabama had a star player who gave a gun to someone that was used murder a lady and he kept playing? Their coach says completely insensitive things about the situation and nothing happens, at all?

Such simpler times.

I'm curious, do we all agree that using the term 'catholic f*gs' was meant to be disparaging/derogatory/contemptuous? not asking whether he is allowed to say it or should be punished, just the intent and idea behind the statement.

I do agree that our fans would *never, ever* speak about a rival school/their alumni/fans in such a derogatory manner.

I didn't mean you on social media fwiw. I have no idea who you are, so obviously don't knowingly follow you. I meant the folks that base their entire social media presence by events like this where they can feign outrage.

Yes, we disagree, and that is ok.

Entities and businesses need to base decisions like this on their consumers' response, not the bs social media mobs. Glad to see it happening.

I agree with your last paragraph, but it seems oftentimes the bs social media mobs inform the consumers response and you get the snowball effect

see bud light's revenue loss - I'm guessing most beer drinkers would have never even known about the "can art" issue if not for all the gnashing of teeth on SM.
Likewise, if the Forde's and Mandel's keep hammering at WVU and it's key stakeholders for a while on this, one of those stakeholders (consumer) may pressure admin to make a more aggressive action.

Sadly, SM dictates policy a lot more than it should never be allowed to

Well, 6% or less of this or any population shouldn't be allowed to drive the bus for the majority...ever...period.

What's a little surprising to me (and I think honestly, pretty naive of me as well) is that there are people in this community that I choose to be a part of, who freely admit that using a homophobic slur is just fine with them.

I'm similarly naive. Even more surprising (and depressing) to me though, every time, is the number of people who don't understand what our first amendment does and does not protect.

You should visit the WC board. You'd be amazed what fellow NC State graduates say, believe, support and defend

How do you know that they really graduated or even attended NC State. Lots of trolls on the internet.

Fair - I think there are some who did not. Seems like a weird place to troll though when there is an entire Twitter verse out there that would garner you significantly more feedback

Since this one is destined to be locked, my thoughts are that what he said is wrong to say, which he very well knows, and whatever consequences he faces from that are his own fault. I also think that as a society we are way too sensitive to words, and quick to want to ruin people's lives for saying things they shouldn't. When I was a kid, "sticks and stones" helped me get through times when people tried to hurt me with words, I wish everyone could feel that way again.

People's happiness is ultimately up to them, sure. But I think a little bit of controlled outrage at things that are nothing but hurtful is sometimes warranted or else nothing ever changes, right? If Huggins wants to say things in his living room or anonymously on line, then fine, he can just be ignored. But an official representative of a public institution should be able to maintain enough basic self awareness to avoid stupid homophobic jokes in a public setting. I don't personally care if WVU fires him or not, they can manage their own image. But I think the discussion about it serves a purpose as long as it doesn't turn nasty or personal. No one asked for my opinion, but that's it.

I don't think most here disagree that he deserves punishment. There are things that are inappropriate to say in a public setting. He has been severely reprimanded for his actions. These days that's not enough for people though. That's where the debate is I think.

I'm not the least bit worried about eliminating the word from speech though. Bad words will always be around and used. Hell, I still use that word. Primarily in an affectionate mocking way to my friends, brothers, nephews, dad, etc. Words are words. Jokes are jokes. Situational awareness is important though.
Sullivan908

Good response. I guess a lot of us are saying basically the same thing in so many words - I just decided to add mine. I agree the degree of punishment is debatable.

When people call out the "woke" crowd, I think this is a decent example

I think what the woke mob has created if someone uses a slang statement or word, it automatically leads to to Bob Huggins doesn't respect gays. What he said was wrong and he apologized. Move on. Let his actions speak for him. None of his past actions has shown anything that he doesn't likes gays - In the 70,80, and 90s, that term was used and I still hear it. It doesn't mean people do not like gays and it is slowly going away. Time heals all of this

$1 million dollars is way too steep for me but Huggins accepted it so it will go away I guess

Rappers and others can say what they want use derogatory language and it is OK. These attacks are targeted.

I think the woke media and social media has successfully created some sort of social police and outrage. It has actually made very reasonable and level headed people become crazy when someone slips up. People make mistakes and we are in a transition as a society.

I always go back to this, if the world could look at everyone's emails for the past 20-30 years, 95% of the world would be fired from their jobs. I truly believe that.

Why would we lock it up? Is this not relevant to college basketball?

The big winner in all of this is WVU. They get to keep their coach and save a bunch of money.

I am shocked he didn't get fired though.....you would have to be an idiot to think you could get away with saying that.

1. Hate speech isn't protected speech under the 1st
2. Gary hahn got suspended for something far less offensive (and i believe that was the correct choice
3. As someone who had a soft spot for Huggins i think firing is the correct call but he really shot himself in the foot and his high major coaching days are on a clock now. No telling how many lgbtq kids come through a program. Your sexuality isn't a factor in sports so no need to advertise it, but these kids see, hear, and process everything.
4. Some of y'all need to learn accountability. Don't wanna get fired for saying bigoted things? Don't say bigoted things. It's not even hard. He chose to say that. On the radio. Like an idiot. He got off lucky.

what he said was inappropriate and tactless at best. Offensive as worst. But i don't think hahn is outwardly hateful. Just old and probably should consider hanging it up.
But yea sctions have consequences

Didn't they have to cancel bowl activities leading up to the game at certain facilities because they were being used to house illegal aliens? I don't think he's hateful and I also don't think it's time for him to hang it up but that comment did come out of nowhere. I actually thought it was kinda funny and not sure what is offensive about that phrase. Politicians from both sides of the aisle used that phrase for decades but now all of a sudden it's offensive lol.

I also think Leafield thought the suspension was rather unnecessary too and that's the reason it only last 2 weeks.

What Huggins said was a much bigger no no.
