2. Gary hahn got suspended for something far less offensive (and i believe that was the correct choice
3. As someone who had a soft spot for Huggins i think firing is the correct call but he really shot himself in the foot and his high major coaching days are on a clock now. No telling how many lgbtq kids come through a program. Your sexuality isn't a factor in sports so no need to advertise it, but these kids see, hear, and process everything.
4. Some of y'all need to learn accountability. Don't wanna get fired for saying bigoted things? Don't say bigoted things. It's not even hard. He chose to say that. On the radio. Like an idiot. He got off lucky.

Actually hate speech is protected by the first amendment.
it's not. Blanket statement are but not anything durected toward a group.

No, not all hate speech is protected by the 1st amendment. There are narrow categories not protected i.e. incitement, true threats, etc
This likely would be protected but I'm pretty sure that although WVU is a state entity, there are other rules, possibly in his contract, i.e. damaging the universities reputation, that would prohibit this type of behavior/speech.
I would fire him because he should know better, but would also expect to pay him a large walking check to avoid a lawsuit that would probably be fought on 1st amendment grounds

Wait….why should Gary have been suspended?
what he said was inappropriate and tactless at best. Offensive as worst. But i don't think hahn is outwardly hateful. Just old and probably should consider hanging it up.
But yea sctions have consequences
Didn't they have to cancel bowl activities leading up to the game at certain facilities because they were being used to house illegal aliens? I don't think he's hateful and I also don't think it's time for him to hang it up but that comment did come out of nowhere. I actually thought it was kinda funny and not sure what is offensive about that phrase. Politicians from both sides of the aisle used that phrase for decades but now all of a sudden it's offensive lol.

I also think Leafield thought the suspension was rather unnecessary too and that's the reason it only last 2 weeks.

What Huggins said was a much bigger no no.
it was holding migrants who were waiting official decisions on their status under extraordinary circumstances.

like that's basically it.
My point is the 1st isn't some blanket catch all that saves you from yournown words. You're still going to be accountable to whatever entities you represent.

Threats are different than hate speech. Hate speech is technically not even real. There is no set category for hate speech in America.

incorrect. It's not a defined legal term but it's been defined by the supreme court

I disagree. Hate speech is technically real, but not defined in the first amendment. That said, you can't use the first amendment to protect yourself from inciting a riot or communicating threats. Your speech against or to promote action/violence against a certain group or class will not be protected by the first amendment. Call it what you will but it is driven by hate towards the target and there is a definition. What Huggins said literally fits the definition of hate speech, but would likely be protected under the 1st Amendment.

hate speech
noun
Bigoted speech attacking or disparaging a social group or a member of such a group.
a term for speech that attacks or disparages a person or group of people based on their social or ethnic group

When people call out the "woke" crowd, I think this is a decent example

I think what the woke mob has created if someone uses a slang statement or word, it automatically leads to to Bob Huggins doesn't respect gays. What he said was wrong and he apologized. Move on. Let his actions speak for him. None of his past actions has shown anything that he doesn't likes gays - In the 70,80, and 90s, that term was used and I still hear it. It doesn't mean people do not like gays and it is slowly going away. Time heals all of this

$1 million dollars is way too steep for me but Huggins accepted it so it will go away I guess

Rappers and others can say what they want use derogatory language and it is OK. These attacks are targeted.

I think the woke media and social media has successfully created some sort of social police and outrage. It has actually made very reasonable and level headed people become crazy when someone slips up. People make mistakes and we are in a transition as a society.

I always go back to this, if the world could look at everyone's emails for the past 20-30 years, 95% of the world would be fired from their jobs. I truly believe that.

I think intent is an important thing to consider in all cases. Was he trying to "attack" the gay community? Nah. He was throwing an insult at a university. Poor choice of words for sure. Especially considering how sensitive people are these days. A good comparison imo is Morgan Wallen. Recorded saying the N word and people tried to crucify him. Radio stations pulled his music. Social media went after him hard. He was drinking with friends at HIS house and he used the word with his friends just like it's used all the time in music or every day life. He wasn't saying it to a member the black community, or with any real malicious intent. Just dudes drinking and talking **** to each other. A neighbor decided to record it and post it to social media. People get crazy over stuff now. They don't even look for the intent. If Huggins found out a player was gay and he used those words to "attack" the player. Fine… fire him on the spot. This is different imo. That wasn't his intent. His intent was to throw shade.
If you never allow for a little fun and relaxation you will become mentally unstable without knowing it.

This
he didn't use "slang" he used the highest and most offensive form of pejorative used against that community for year which was often followed by violence.
I don't know what's so hard to understand about that.

Disagreed. But you're definitely accentuating FLwolf's point with your faux outrage.

How do you know his outrage is not real?

Based on the hyperbole on the quoted post. I admit it's not scientific.
it's a slur. You stupid dip***** Idk how plainly it can be stated for you.

And you know what... that's fine. You use a slur around me and mine I will hit you so hard in the throat talking will be difficult for you for a long while.

1st amendment can't protect you from getting your ass kicked.

The irony of "it's a slur. You stupid dip****" is not lost on me lol

Lol. More of that selective outrage too.
do you even know what the phrase means?

How is it selective if it's something someone is serious about... because YOU don't get mad over it? Hmmmm

$1 million dollars is way too steep for me but Huggins accepted it so it will go away I guess

younhave no idea what irony is.
Even if you were right you'd be talking about hypocrisy not irony.
Now that's ironic
It can actually be both. Don't get mad, no need to take message boards so serious.
just because you old farts know how to incite then crawl back "aka internet arguing 102" doesn't make your arguments any less asinine
lol @ "old farts". You sure are full of slurs for someone who is so sensitive about slurs
