1. Hate speech isn't protected speech under the 1st
2. Gary hahn got suspended for something far less offensive (and i believe that was the correct choice
3. As someone who had a soft spot for Huggins i think firing is the correct call but he really shot himself in the foot and his high major coaching days are on a clock now. No telling how many lgbtq kids come through a program. Your sexuality isn't a factor in sports so no need to advertise it, but these kids see, hear, and process everything.
4. Some of y'all need to learn accountability. Don't wanna get fired for saying bigoted things? Don't say bigoted things. It's not even hard. He chose to say that. On the radio. Like an idiot. He got off lucky.
That's just not true. Hate speech is protected, from government, overreach! Now, speech can absolutely be reprimanded, by an employer, if they chose.
The Huggins situation would not be classified as government overreach. He is in an employer/employee agreement.
You folks need a lesson on the constitution, and it's protections of peoples natural rights. The founders believed that people are born with rights, and the constitution, is a recognition of those rights; therefore, they can't pass laws to curtail those rights.
Once a person, enters into a work environment, the employer can admonish an employee for certain actions, that go against company policy, values, etc…. What WVU did is completely in line with proper actions, whether I agree with them, or not.
The government didn't jail, fine, etc.. Huggins for his actions. That would be a violation of the first amendment.
For me, and some may disagree, kneeling, during sporting events, is NOT a protected 1st amendment right, while representing a school, professional team, or business. One can absolutely be admonished for that action.
So, I ask, what's the difference in kneeling and what Huggins said, from a 1st amendment standpoint? To me, nothing, if an employer chooses to take action, then, they have the same right as WVU.
