It's interesting that folks are assuming that any additional absences outside the normal must be illegals. That's a really important, hard, thankless job and a very high proportion of teachers are in it for the right reasons and doing the best they can with the limited tools and resources they have.

I'm not really giving teachers a hard time, either, it's just that I get the sense that things never really recovered from the botched attempts at remote learning 3-4 years ago. Maybe not, it's just anecdotal stuff I've heard.

Of course at that point he could have just said "forget the legislation" and just ordered the Justice Dept to fully release the files, but he didn't for some reason.

Anyway, if you think the Epstein Files are actually going to be released you're high. The Justice Dept will most likely pretend there are "ongoing investigations" or pull some other pretext out of their butts to comply as little as possible. At minimum, it would be truly surprising if any Republicans in the files, never mind Trump, aren't redacted/omitted to protect national security or something. And the legislation requires omitting any pics, so I guess we'll never get to see the photo of Trump blowing "Bubba", whoever that is.

I think it's demonstrable that kids who went through virtual learning during Covid were set back, for sure, especially at certain ages. Seemed to affect my then-middle school son more than my elementary school daughter.

I don't think that circumstance should be an indictment of educators, though; that was on the policy makers.

And while students were set back, I don't get the sense the public educational system itself is consequentially worse today than it was before Covid, at least not for any reasons that relate to Covid.

Saw Charlotte had ballooned from the typical 8%-9% absent rate up to 16% on Monday. Was Wake's similar?

Not sure what gets your goat the most, but I'd guess a high percentage of the kids absent are birthright citizens even if they have undocumented family members. And what's the alternative to educating kids that are here? The societal cost of them being uneducated is higher than the cost of educating them.

Limit illegal immigration however we see fit, but if kids (illegal or not) are sitting in a house down in Clayton, our society is better off with those kids getting an education and the opportunities/counter-incentives to crime and other drains on safety and resources that come with a more educated, contributory populace.

We had three vendor company owners call yesterday to either say they wouldn't be on site or they'd be short-staffed (framers, painters, siding guys). Owners are legal/documented and most of their guys are too. They said their guys were scared though because many have undocumented parents or grandparents or cousins at home and are scared of them getting pulled into the machine.

Civ, I agree… teaching is a thankless job. That said, the resources being provided need to be prioritized. I see my wife doing certain training that is completely a joke. Some, according to her are good. Now, some brilliant person made a decision to bring in equity sticks, for Teachers to use, when engaging students. That's a joke! In fact, most of the teachers, as I understand things, don't use that resource.

So, yes, I agree with your sentiment; however, I believe we have waste that can utilized to proper support teachers with better resources. All, at the same time when we've cut (Wake County) resources on special needs kids and they get put in general population teaching. It's not good for the special needs kids and it's not good for the rest of the classroom.
