States control state elections; TRUE. Remember that when Trump EO requires federal elections to have a photo govt issued ID for registered voters.

California's Fourth District Court of Appeal just gutted Huntington Beach's voter ID requirement.
Rob Bonta and Shirley Weber won.
The message: states control elections, not cities.
Measure A, passed by voters to require ID in 2026, is now legally dead.

Rob Bonta:
"California's system is already secure and uniform statewide."

So, local democracy takes a backseat to state uniformity.
Voters wanted voter ID. Judges said no.
Election integrity arguments lost to centralized authority.
Huntington Beach tried. California's bureaucracy said absolutely not.

In the meantime, Hokie, sit out there and hold some type of moral position and watch our country go straight to Hell!! Stand for something! People like Mamdahni stand for something!! And, he just won our greatest city and the financial institution of the world.

Can you articulate what exactly it is that Mamdani stands for that you find so objectionable?

Not that you disagree with - I'm sure there's a lot of meat on that bone.

I'm talking about what stances you think are existential threats, keeping in mind that he is not a king either, and will not be able to ramrod and mayor-executive-order a communist agenda through Council and the machinations of city government.

First and Foremost, he's a Communist. That enough!!

My real issue is that just 24 years ago, Islamist flew planes into the WTC. Now, the 40% of non-US born citizens voted for him. That shows you how bad this country has fallen! Immigration is a shame! Furthermore, immigrants, of the past, came here knowing the what the US stands for. Our education system has created this anti-American sentimate we have! Mamdani is the epitome of Anti-American!!

Eyeroll.

What do the 9/11 attacks have to do with Mamdani? Zero.

Nobody who studies communism would ever say that he's communist so no, that's not even close to correct either.

He basically ran on putting people first, cheaper housing, and not being a sex assaulter or Granny-killer like Cuomo.

The people of NY didn't exactly have a lot to choose from. He's articulate, seems kind and people-first, and isn't a criminal (Cuomo) or bought (Eric Adams) so he obviously stood out.

A really nice, well-spoken, and put together candidate, that's also Muslim and that has really progressive stances (that would almost certainly not work on a national platform; he's left of Bernie and AOC) winning an election in the one of the most diverse, expensive cities on the East Coast isn't exactly a sign of the apocalypse.

sorry man, this guy openly wants to eradicate Jews from the Earth. He isn't a communist, but definitely a socialist. His policies are absurd and have been proven to not work (rent freezes, more regulation of housing, government run grocery stores, free busses). Hes going to run out of other people's money fast.

You're saying his policies aren't practical or affordable. I'm not arguing those points; I'm saying they are fairly humanist, and I can understand why that appeals to people in one of the most expensive cities in the country especially compared to the prospect of voting for Andrew ****ing Cuomo or Eric Adams.

Saying he wants to eradicate the Jews is a fair departure from what I've seen him and some Jewish leaders say about him. He has obviously been open in his pro-Palestinian stance and doesn't think Israel should be favored over other countries and cultures, but has said explicitly he supports Israel's right to exist.

He also garnered 30% of the Jewish vote in the city, which circumstantially you wouldn't think would be the case if he wanted to eradicate Jews.

He is obviously not going to have any foreign policy input or sway, but it will be interesting to see how we navigates this issue.

One thing he absolutely needs to do is to put his money where his mouth is regarding his self-described, desire for human rights for all, and quickly and emphatically condemn, and move to eliminate, instances of antisemitism in the city when they arise, along with similar condemnations when other bigotry or discrimination rears head in a public way in the city during his term.

Eyeroll back at you…

Socialism is just a charade for Communism. You know that and I know that.

As I said before, he was a great campaigner, told the people what they wanted to hear (see your list above;. For that, I have no issue. His prescriptions for those issues are the problem.

Example: it's my understanding that NYC has over 100K apartments that are not rented, essentially sitting there. What is being said is that those apartments require upfittng; however, they are all rent controlled or stabilized. The owners of the building choose to wait things out and let them sit, as opposed to, putting them on the market

Now, did Mamdani do this? No! His rhetoric will not change this outcome. Practicality has to view this rent-controlled policy needs revisiting. He will not do this!

Government owned grocery stores - Communist!

Civ, people only tell you a snippet of their plans. Hell, you complained about Project 2025 and now it's being pushed through. Go back and look at my comments, at the time, and you will see that I said Trump is not being truthful when he said he knew nothing about Project 2025. Who was right?

Is NYC in the edge of an apocalypse? No! FYI, I do have a daughter that lives in NYC and I am concerned about her safety. You would too…. The demise of NYC is so apparent ever since we lost Police Commissioner's like Kerik and Kelly. So, Mamdani is just another notch in the demise of our greatest City and one that more closely aligns with 9/11 than you can think.

Yes, the people voted for this. Yes, the native NYC people voted for Cuomo (the lesser of two evils). Yes, 40% of NYC residents are "Not" US born. Yes, coming to the US doesn't mean the same thing as it used too. Yes, younger voters voted overwhelmingly towards Mamdani. That tells you all you want!

Civ, I'm sure you will have retorts that will sound like a MSNBC (or whatever it's going to be called) commentator; because… let's face it… you're a Liberal! Your ideology has been the steady decline of our country.

Please don't ask me why regarding my last statement. The results speak for themselves.

So, China is sinking a ton of money into data centers to support AI expansion. This is where things get a little dicey…. Should the Federal Government get involved to win the AI war? My initial reaction, as always, is that the Federal Government doesn't have a constitutional role in this.

I believe we have enough capital, in the private sector, to fund their development. Investors need to prioritize their investments for the ROI they want.

Now, I'll ask you… should the Federal Government lift a finger for another company, in the same space?

I don't have an overly pessimistic view about this; I do think the pendulum swings back some when Trump is gone.

Tone starts from the top and he and his sons are just classless, crass, trashy dudes and expect and want that from those around them so you see their behavior mirrored in Vance (explicitly) and Johnson (passively) and others.

I don't think other Republican party leaders will get away with that type of conduct (or even attempt to) and Dem party leaders self-flagellate and purity test each other too much for poor conduct to go broadly unaddressed, unapologized for, or excused.

Can you imagine your outrage if just one of your President Trumps sons were like Hunter?!?! You would have a field day.

Like Hunter, in what way?

Trump Jr. appears to be coked up in about half of his interviews so you're definitely not talking about drug use.

Hunter is a total mess personally but WRT how he comports himself in public and the way he treats others, what has he ever done that was as unprofessional or unkind or inappropriate as making fun of someone for almost being murdered?

Of course in Mamdani's case, he's not calling for getting rid of existing private grocery stores... just wants a government option to see if he can drive the food market prices down. Probably a stupid idea, but hey, gotta love these little laboratories of democracy trying stuff out.

Incidentally, after a debt crises back in the 1970s, rules were put in place so that city changes like taxing the wealthy or free buses have to be approved by Albany. So yeah, file those under "unlikely".

It's telling that you think that abortions are performed at dissimilar rates by conservative and liberal women.

Conservative and liberal women obtain abortions at nearly identical rates, around 1 in 7. 14% of Dem, 12% of Pub, and 15% of independent women have had abortions. And since this relies on self-reporting and Republican women know their abortion was out of step with their party platform, it's likely that the Republican number is higher, likely exactly in line with Dem and Independent women.

The only difference between the parties is the increased shame and stigma, and reduced compassion, on the right.

Absolutely not. In no way/shape/form should the government lift a finger for this company

Now, I'll ask you… should the Federal Government lift a finger for another company, in the same space?

they're already doing it so what one more company?

So, don't take stand if you don't agree with a policy?

Cant, that's TDS

Not if you have a disagreement with a policy. Just speak your position and move on. I have many position differences than the Trump Admin. Would you say I have TDS?

No, this is all about expansion for OpenAI. To me, they are asking for bail outs for losses while privatizing profits. The federal government should tell them to kick rocks.

Ill admit I am vehemently opposed to AI as of right now. Its a giant push in my line of work (EHR) and I am...lets just say skeptical about what itll bring to the table.

So, Iyou are ok with picking winners and losers in the market place for the federal Government, right? Also, why are you worried about AI in your job? How is AI, in this case, any different than the outsourcing of jobs, we've done since the 90's?

I mean, aren't we just outsourcing positions to AI?

I dont want the federal government to pick anything for companies. They have no business in investing in publicly traded companies. I understand that it happens, particularly with bailouts, but that doesnt mean I think they should do it whenever they want. This also isnt a bailout, its OpenAI expanding their business. Why should the federal government pick up the tab for that?

As far as my job, I am in no way concerned about AI taking it. My concern is more the fact that doctor's/nurses will let AI take over their decision making process, which is a terrifying concept to me. Ive already seen some really stupid examples where they were relying on the system for stuff with really stupid outcomes.
