CHINESE COUPLE CAUGHT SNEAKING CROP-KILLING FUNGUS INTO MICHIGAN LAB?!

2 Chinese nationals tried smuggling a deadly fungus into the U.S. that can destroy crops and poison food.

Prosecutors say Zunyong Liu flew it into Detroit for his girlfriend Yunqing Jian, who works at a University of Michigan lab not cleared for biohazards.

The fungus, Fusarium graminearum, devastates wheat, corn and rice, causes vomiting and liver damage, and is labeled a potential agroterrorism weapon.

It triggers billions in crop losses yearly.

Officials say Jian's research was funded by China and that she's a Communist Party member.

Liu was deported.

Jian faces charges of conspiracy, smuggling, visa fraud and lying to officials.

U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. called it a major national security threat.

I don't disagree. I view it as if someone were to have to jump off a runaway train. If they train can be slowed, then the jump might not be fatal. Crank the economy 1st. Well before October 7, Netanyahu worked overtime injecting himself into American politics, intentionally and increasingly antagonizing Democrats. He's very much responsible for the previously unheard-of partisan rift in support for Israel... Dem politicians still overwhelmingly vote for Israeli aid, and Biden was as big a stalwart as you can get, but the rank and file are pretty sick of having their noses rubbed in Netanyahu's MAGA alliance. So that dynamic was already festering when Gaza happened, which lit a powder keg under the college-campus types.

Honestly, though, I'm somewhat familiar with Israel (my sister in law was married to an Israeli, I've spent time there, driven through the West Bank, etc), and there are pretty intense protests there, too, demanding a withdrawal from Gaza, etc. A lot of Israelis are sick of Netanyahu, too.

SOOO, right or wrong... being pi**ed at Israel over what's happening in Gaza just isn't the same thing as some crazy a**hole targeting someone because they're Jewish. The former is called free speech... every idiot gets an opinion. The latter must be universally condemned. The continued excuses and non punishment of obvious antisemitism on college campuses created the next reasonable step of from preventing Jewish students from free movement on campus and disrupting their classes as well as other clear antisemitic "protests" in cities has made the natural transition to straight up violence against Jews. No, I'm providing glaring counterpoints to you arbitrarily keying on cities and colleges as being primary drivers of antisemitism.

When we start pointing fingers about "what's causing it," it becomes political because public policy, rhetoric, and leadership all influence societal norms. If we're actually serious about addressing anti-Semitism, we can't ignore when influential figures whether they're politicians, media or online personalities, or state sponsors normalize or wink at hate (or ignore it on campuses, or in cities, or anywhere else).

I just think it's silly to key only on cities or isolated college ecosystems stocked with in many cases misguided but well-intentioned SJW's, when the President dropping tropes casually in conversations for years and being pals with disgusting losers like Ye and Nick Fuentes; X/Musk amplifying extremist anti-Semitic content; and Tucker Carlson pushing the Great Replacement and platforming Holocaust deniers have an exponentially greater influence and reach.

Related aside, what exactly should cities do to quash anti-Semitism that they're not already doing, and that doesn't violate the First Amendment? They very obviously need to aggressively pursue justice against perps of hate crimes, but I'm not aware of them doing otherwise. What else?

I key on that because that is a current driver for the escalation of violence. I'm certainly not discounting what you are saying here, I believe that is also a huge issue. But right now, since October 7, the media, the administrators, and prosecutors all have a part in this escalation in violence against Jews. I also think the media swooning over Luigi Mangione also plays a role in this change.

Again, the Intifada has come to American soil. It is both home grown (DC shooter) and foreign (Boulder fire bomber) terrorism. The sooner that we quit making excuses for people who clearly support Hamas and pretend that they are protesting the war on Gaza, and rid ourselves of the elected officials and administrators who excuse this behavior, the better off we will be in fighting off more of these attacks.

To answer your last paragraph, I don't know, maybe when students storm a building and take hostages on a college campus, they should be arrested and prosecuted, not excused and set free. That is not free speech, that is a criminal action that went unpunished. There are countless other examples of disturbing the peace, occupying buildings, denying access for Jewish students to go to classes or traverse campus (which I believe is also criminal, not free speech), etc.
