BREAKING: Retired four-star Navy Admiral Robert P. Burke, aged 63, has been found guilty on federal charges including bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery, acts affecting a personal financial interest, and concealment of material facts.

The conviction stems from a scheme where Burke, while serving as a four-star admiral in 2021, awarded a $355,000 sole-source contract to a New York-based company, Next Jump, for workforce training in Italy and Spain. In exchange, he secured a post-retirement job with Next Jump starting in October 2022, with a $500,000 annual salary and 100,000 stock options.

Burke, who retired in August 2022 as commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, was the Navy's former vice chief of naval operations (20192020) and chief of naval personnel (20162019). The bribery scheme involved Burke allegedly steering contracts to Next Jump's co-CEOs, Yongchul "Charlie" Kim and Meghan Messenger, who were also charged.

Burke was accused of lying to the Navy about his role in the contract and the timing of employment discussions to conceal the scheme.

Not sure I follow your point but it's been my experience that close relationships developed between NIH grants management specialists and the folks they funded at various academic institutions. Too close.

That's because it's all smoke and mirrors. If DOGE was a real entity, it would have first looked at Medicare/Medicare fraud. But they didn't, they went after politically expedient departments (which some of I agree with - programs that do not promote the United States mission abroad, and some I do not - gutting research grants without looking at the big picture and coming up with a plan to reduce gradually in conjunction with the universities the portions of grant funding that are potentially wasteful.

If they had taken a measured approach, and not inflated the numbers they said they were saving, then I would've been in full support. Instead, they lied and they took a fire aim ready approach to finding waste/fraud/abuse.

What they did find amounts to a rounding error in the budget. Debt won't get solved without reforming entitlements, or raising taxes significantly on everyone, which I suspect is what is going to happen in the near future.

Again, ignoring the why I thought DOGE was bad and just thinking it's for political purposes is a constant problem here. I believe in conservative principles and also keeping the US the only superpower in the world. That includes funding for things that do help other countries, research and development, and lowering entitlement spending, not getting into trade wars for zero reason other than a Presidents whim, not enacting protectionist tariffs, and for Gods sake, repeal of the Jones act.
