Covid-19 is on the rise again as the world approaches the fourth virus season since the coronavirus arrived on the scene.

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show a slight increase in hospital admissions, emergency department visits, and positive Covid-19 tests although not nearly as high as in past summers.

Summer travel, unrelenting heat that drives people indoors, and weakened immunity to the virus may all be to blame for this increase in Covid-19 activity, rather than an infectious new variant.

Experts say it's impossible to know what the fall and winter virus season may hold, but there are still tools to get through the small summer surge and prepare for the months ahead.

Should you get vaccinated now, or wait for a new booster in the fall?

Moderna and Pfizer are both working on updated Covid-19 vaccines targeted to the XBB strains subvariants of the Omicron variant. Pfizer has said its new shot could be approved in November, and vaccines are expected to be available in late September or early October.

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California San Francisco, says If you are over the age of 65 or have a weakened immune system, and you have no recent immunity to Covid-19, you should not wait to get an updated Covid-19 shot. The bivalent booster currently being offered will provide sufficient immunity. People who get the existing booster will then need to wait weeks or months before getting the updated booster expected to be released in the fall.

"I would probably go and get it right now if you haven't been boosted recently," he says, adding that immunity to any Covid-19 strain puts older adults and the immunocompromised at an advantage over the virus.

The same applies to children who have never been vaccinated or who have not been vaccinated recently, according to Dr. Adam Ratner, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at New York University and a member of the Committee on Infectious Diseases at the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"I would not wait if I had an unvaccinated kid," Ratner says. "The variants that are circulating right now are less efficiently neutralized by antibodies that come from the original vaccine, but that's not the same as there being no protection from the earlier versions of the vaccine."

I'm very surprised at the covid vaccine rates in North Carolina. According to this website, the state of North Carolina currently has the lowest percentage of their population of all 50 states that have taken a booster (19.5%). Meanwhile, NC had one of the very highest percentages of their population taking at least one shot (89.2%), higher than California, Minnesota and Oregon.

What do we make of these numbers? Is that rate of at least one dose inflated and incorrect? Or were the people of NC just slow to catch on to what was really going on, and have now finally wised up to the fact that this was all a scam?

It's depressing, to see how gullible most people are...and then all the others who cave in to peer pressure, and all the other pressure applied by corporations, governments, etc.

From looking at the people in my social circle here in the state of NC, I can see how that 89% number could be fairly accurate. My dad was in poor health around early 2021, and thought he needed the vaccine because if he caught covid it would kill him. He is super conservative and distrusts the government/Establishment...however, he watched a lot of "mainstream" TV media, and believed the official narrative on covid, even though I was talking to him several times a week at that time and telling him about how it was all a scam. I don't think my mom initially wanted to get the vaxx, but my dad pressured her into doing it (he believed that she needed it to further "protect him").

My brother is also super conservative, and distrusts the government/Establishment. I talked to him a few months after the vaxx came out, and discussed the potential negative side effects of the vaccine and how we distrusted the vaxx just due to the fact that the government/Establishment was pushing it so hard. He seemed 100% in agreement with me in opposition to taking the vaxx, no matter the cost. Then, I found out several months later that he caved and got the J&J vaccine, due to wanting to be able to travel internationally (and although I didn't hear this, I suspect probably due to pressure from his girlfriend/fiancee).

At my workplace, from talking with co-workers and overhearing conversations, it seems like about 80-90% of the ~20 of my co-workers that I work with daily got at least one dose. A couple of the guys I work with are also part-time in the military and probably wouldn't have gotten the vaccine if they had the choice, but obviously were forced to take it. Another one of the guys I work with is fairly conservative and said that he didn't want to get it, but that his wife pressured him into getting it, pretty much demanding that he take it.

The wife and me just got our 4th shot (last) booster. With my age and underlying health issues and with me dealing with subcontractors across all fields of construction on job sites, and the birth of our 1st grandson I just felt better doing it. I've had no side effects at all other than some mild soreness at the injection site. Had covid once with no symptoms.

It's pretty rampant in my area. I know several that have/had it recently. Fortunately for me I recently exposed myself to the Durham and Charlotte strands so I should be rock solid this fall. Haha. I hope so at least.
