Heath was fantastic last night.
I am not sure how we landed where we have with this bullpen.
It's a combination of things. Losing two guys who you were planning on accounting for 45% of your innings pitched each weekend really hurts.
Playing from behind hurts. When you're already thin you can't throw Nance in a game you're losing 6-4.
Manuel, Kitchings, Black, Heintz. All of these guys have showed potential but just haven't been good.
Then this staff relied way too much on Dudan and Mahron in the weak non conference. No reason they should have been throwing 110 pitches against Princeton. Should have taken that time to develop some younger guys.
Even with Dudan and Marohn this pen is a mess. Too many guys who are misses because of lack of command.
Getting to use 2 of Consiglio/Hemric/Andrews as bullpen arms in addition to Nance & Garino is as good top end as many ACC teams.
Plus, you likely get to use Nance 2x a weekend more often vs. one extended outing if he's following Marohn on Fridays first out.
Then you get the emergence of a young guy like Ragusa and you have as good of a weekend rotation and bullpen as you can ask for.
Look at UNC as the shining example - Decaro is good (Marohn is better IMO). We will probably see Lynch tonight and Dudan blows him away. Then they have Boaz next who is no good at all. Behind that they have two guys in Glauber (Nance > slightly IMO) & McDuffie (Better than Garino for sure, but better than Cig?) who throw 2-3 times a weekend and Matthijs who is just solid, but doesn't blow you away and doesn't pitch very often. They've won 21 conference games and are 2nd in the country with 5 guys throwing 84% of their innings.
When fully healthy I think the two pitching staffs are pretty even.
The difference is the offense. Your staff has given you a chance in just about every series even with the injuries.
The GT series is the perfect example. How many teams have the horses to hold them to 9 runs in the first two games at their place. Yet you lose both games 3-1 and 6-4.
UNC wins the first two games against GT because their offense was able to score 5 runs in the first game and 14 in the second.
They are bringing dudes out of the pen that are amongst the highest rated guys in NC coming out of HS. We have 1 dude out of the pen and that wouldn't have changed regardless of injury.
I guess I just don't look at yesterday and think the bullpen was the problem. It was the offense and defense.

At some point you have to have a pair of nuts and bring in a meaningful arm in a close game, even if you're down.
Bringing in Peisel might have been the dumbest decision I have ever seen Avent make. I can't remember one putting where JP hasn't been shelled. He couldn't make it out of the 1st inning against freaking Lafayette yet let's bring him in in the biggest moment of the year.
Yeah they just named the clubhouse after coach Avent the only baseball hire boo will be making Is maybe a new janitor. Until he decides to retire avents not being replaced. Just a fact.BBADWOLF#1 said:
Boo will be making a hire soon

I don't really keep up with baseball but one thing I know. UNC baseball has a lot more $ than NC State Baseball. This will be Avent's final season, but unless the $ situation changes it won't matter who Boo hires.

More money is always good but I'm not sure why it matters in this scenario? What's the issue? State has more than enough talent. They've averaged 5 draft picks per year since covid and are set for like 8 this year. Isn't that the whole point of having money?
For the seniors.

UNC has a 3.64 ERA. NC State has a 5.39 ERA. I would imagine that's about the $ available to acquire talent and depth in the pitching staff. It matters.

It's about HS recruiting. None of those UNC guys are portal guys.
