Even if Nance can't go today, I don't blame them for having him go yesterday. You have a ~2 hour rain delay that knocks out a pitcher who was cruising and have to turn to someone.
While you're up 1 and likely to be up more, there's no guarantee you get 5 runs. You have to make a decision before the inning starts, or if you wait and see and have him rush to get ready and he doesnt pitch well you get burned for having 2 hours to figure it out and not having your guy ready.
Is it ideal, no, but its also not a video game. Its hard to have someone get honestly ready and then also tell them, 'but if we score 2+ runs here you wont pitch - so lock in'! And what was the magic number for the lead with 6 outs left? Notre Dame wasnt that long ago and that was just 4 in the 9th.
You had a decision to make to put your best foot forward toward winning a game to even the series and chose it, totally understandable.
Exactly. Coaches don't get to make decisions in hindsight.
The same people complaining about using Nance would be the same people questioning where Nance is if you had brought in a different pitcher and VT scored 4 runs.
We have heard it all year when they were using Consiglio in the pen.
We have people pissed they brought in Nance to win a game but wanted to bring him in when you were losing 4-0. Can you imagine burning your best bullpen arm in a loss?
