I hope we have a diff pitcher coming up for the 9th.

I would bet Nance finishes it. Last time we tried to throw him twice in one weekend it didn't go well. Don't think he has that kind of arm.

Good win. Team had a huge chance coming out of the lightning delay and took full advantage.

Let's go get a big one tomorrow.

So Garino and Nance both burned. How do you get 27 outs tomorrow?

Score 14 runs again and worry about the pitching in the bottom half of the innings

I know Nance hasn't always looked good throwing twice in a weekend. But I think you gotta throw him again, especially considering he threw like 25 pitches

Even if Nance can't go today, I don't blame them for having him go yesterday. You have a ~2 hour rain delay that knocks out a pitcher who was cruising and have to turn to someone.

While you're up 1 and likely to be up more, there's no guarantee you get 5 runs. You have to make a decision before the inning starts, or if you wait and see and have him rush to get ready and he doesnt pitch well you get burned for having 2 hours to figure it out and not having your guy ready.

Is it ideal, no, but its also not a video game. Its hard to have someone get honestly ready and then also tell them, 'but if we score 2+ runs here you wont pitch - so lock in'! And what was the magic number for the lead with 6 outs left? Notre Dame wasnt that long ago and that was just 4 in the 9th.

You had a decision to make to put your best foot forward toward winning a game to even the series and chose it, totally understandable.

with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs going into the rain delay, you have Nance and another pitcher up and you make the call after our half inning. It is managing the risk and keeping your best reliever for Sunday. If we get up 4-5, you bring in the lesser pitcher and save Nance. I don't get it. That is how every team manages this with a game the next day. Every MLB team and college teams would not burn your closer up 5 in the 8th.

I am not sure what Avent's policy is about getting guys warm and then sitting them and throwing them the next day.

Not disagreeing with your overall point, but is Nance our closer?

our best bullpen guy/closer - whatever

Just save him for today up 5 in the 8th

I just think the timing of the delay makes the decision harder, someone else has to pitch in B8 after a 2 hour delay.

In a normal situation, you probably dont even have another arm up yet the way Garino was mowing them down and if what happens happens; you have Garino go and then if he gets into trouble up 4 or 5 you decide what to do naturally from there.

I could be wrong, but I just dont recall a lot of times where Nance has warmed up and not entered. His usage for the most part has been pretty defined - mostly piggybacking the starter and trying to end a game.

It would've been interesting to see, but had they gone with someone else and they immediately got into trouble what do you do and can Nance stay warm for all of 8 and 9 should he be needed to enter.

Exactly. Coaches don't get to make decisions in hindsight.

The same people complaining about using Nance would be the same people questioning where Nance is if you had brought in a different pitcher and VT scored 4 runs.

We have heard it all year when they were using Consiglio in the pen.

We have people pissed they brought in Nance to win a game but wanted to bring him in when you were losing 4-0. Can you imagine burning your best bullpen arm in a loss?
FLWolf
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I that is the calculated risk you take up 5-you have to live with it if someone struggles

Up 5 and needing 6 outs, I would have taken the risk to have him today

We have to win this series and you have to take chances

No inside info, but the way Avent referenced him 2x in the postgame yesterday makes me think he's out multiple games (hopefully 2 and not 10).

Huge blow the way he was hitting (and steady enough fielding). Going to need to find a way today

It has been a tough year of injuries no doubt. Watching Coastal this AM and interesting to compare how the two programs have done in the midst of these injury riddled seasons

I hope it is just a sprain and not a break

Feel bad about this one after watching it a few times-I didn't see anything roll over and it just jammed which could cause a break. I am sure he is in a boot today no matter what

No Mikey Ryan for NC State this afternoon in the series finale against Virginia Tech.

Ryan is wearing a walking boot and will be reevaluated when the team returns to Raleigh.

Ethan we know you hate Avent, and I'm not denying Coastal is still having a really good year but this weekend marks just their second series win against a team in the top 50 RPI. The same amount State will have if they win today.

I don't hate Avent at all, I've liked Avent more than the people I talk to about the team typically. His ability to do more with less the majority of his tenure is nothing short of impressive and I'd argue anybody on that. But the last two years don't fall in that category and I think it's been rough. I just think Coastal is an interesting comp. If State gets to the tournament Avent will get credit for overcoming the adversity to get there and he should

Avent has had a great career. The game has changed so much the past 2 years and not in a good way if you ask me. You just have to wonder if Avent is able to change as well at this late stage in his career. I don't think it is really Avent style to ask for money or even demand money from different sources and I think you have no shot these days without the requisite financing.

I wish NC State would invest financially in baseball. It would take so little and the potential results could be huge.
