Yikes. Hopefully they can do a turnaround but they have a long ways to go

What an incredibly weak showing this weekend.

Very poor defense. Poor bats. Two games of sub-par pitching.

Not exciting.

Random but is Trenton Lyons hurt?

0 AB so far for a switch hitter that got some run in the SEC last year and hit above .250. Jsut figured off the bench he would be ahead of Novy, Woodson, Gilliam, etc.

My optimism was always just about the pitching, which was more than good enough to win every game this weekend. Defense has been pitiful. Offense somehow worse.

Andrews was great. Marohn was very good. Shaffner, Wimbish, Nance, Lucas, & Consiglio all pitched very well. Heck, Landon Carr had a good inning. Consiglio's numbers going to blow up because of a misplay leading to an inside the park grand slam (scored a triple and an error). Fritton & Dudan remain sluggish. I'd go as far to say that Dudan was non-competitive. Fritton was good enough to get out of his start only allowing 3 but committed his own error to blow his line up even further.

The roster 1-9 was clearly built to peak late with the youth at play. I'm struggling to see where that peak is going to come from.

This is what we feared, bats wouldn't live up to the hype. It is still early but feels like there are just too many options and none of the combinations have worked.

Sosa and Hogue are slumping and they are two guys we were banking on, hopefully they turn things around.

Defense is very bad. Big big drop off at catcher from what we have been used to.

Is Lyons hurt or just not nearly as good as we thought? Don't know if he has had a single appearance yet.

Looks like we have another case of the preseason overhype machine. We could've all made a lot of money betting against what the boys in green tell us about a team. Fortunately, women's bball has been good, but this has been the year of oversell and under deliver. Obviously, still a ton of season left, but not looking good so far.

Only prediction I posted here was that UVA would win the league, and we would finish somewhere in the top 7. And that our pitching could carry us as far as we want to go if the offense can score.

Point me to the excuses? We can talk ball all you want. Don't play a conference game for another 3 weeks

Yeah, kinda seems like our portal class is a lot like basketball. JAG city. (still early)

It is one weekend - baseball is a funny sport and sometimes a few line up tweaks changes everything

Of the new guys I think Fraasman and Head are going to be really good players and need to be slotted towards the top of the lineup. Decriscio is one of the only guys consistently hitting the ball hard and that's not surprising given that he's played the most by far of anyone else on the team.

That was the conversation during portal time, and I think discussed pretty fairly. Do you swing for the highly recruited, under-utilized players like Jaros & Ossenfort? Or do you try get lucky with another old guy who maybe hasn't performed to the top of his potential but played a bunch of baseball? That's why we have to wait and see, but I'm with you in that right now it's pretty hard to see.

State's best teams have traditionally come out of the blocks slow and then kicked it into high gear the last 2-3 months. 2019 started 19-0 and ended up ranked #1, didn't host. 0-2 in Greenville.

2021 had the 1-8 conference start + a loss to UNCG and should've won the title. Weird how it shakes out and hard to take too much early. Need some leaders to emerge

To be fair, Jaros and Ossenfort have hit so far in the limited chances they've had.

Threw out there a few days ago that I would like to see the DH spot be used on those 2. Also not so sure we don't need to ossenfort get a look at 1b defensively.

Yea I was thinking yesterday if McHugh could play third?

Or you just eat the defense at third with Jaros?

Yup. Well said. I am just waiting for bright spots to emerge along the way, if there are any. Then, maybe we can begin to put some things together. Still early.

I wouldn't take Heavner off the field until late. I'm tired of the Benny Hill Show defense we've seen. He at least can move runners around and has a respectable K rate.

When you have the amount of pitching talent and depth we do, you put your best defensive team on the field and just try to figure out the offense. If that means small ball, stealing bases, etc, that's what you do. You can't piss away pitching with poor defense, especially when those dudes ain't hitting either.
3-2 wins count the same as 17-8 wins.

Agree with all of the comments the last page or so. Offense certainly won't be what it was last year but have some pieces. I think Nixon and JD at the top of the order is really good. Sosa has to get going. I like Fraasman and Head a lot and think Mchugh will be solid and a good college player. But we have to get more from everyone else.

I don't have a clue what the coaching staff was thinking trotting out Marohn for the 6th. He was 80+ pitches and you hadn't thrown what most think are your best arms in Dudan and Consiglio all weekend. Go 2 from one and 2 from the other and give yourself a chance. Instead he walks first guy, they bunt him over and JT goes sideways and then you are bringing what has been a struggling Dudan into a pressure cooker when you had just cut it to 1 run. Most of this weekend was on the bats and the defense but that was just bad coaching imo.

Need our best players to play like it or this won't go anywhere. Got a couple of weeks to figure it out but need to figure it out quick

Wake up call for the team. Although obvious that this team has a long way to go, I don't think losing the way they did against Liberty helped their confidence and psyche. I could be wrong but I think that carried over to road trip and each loss became more crippling. We shall see. Hopefully by conference play they will be playing much better baseball.
