These guys shag during BP all the time, I would hope they can handle it with a 15 run lead lol.

oh absolutely zero issues with it, just thought it was interesting. Shaffner was a big time 2 way kid in HS, wasn't sure about Payne

Do we need a review in a 15 run game?

Agreed.

I know the competition in this game makes it hard to take too much from it, but throwing breaking balls for strikes, throwing strikes in general, fielding the ball cleanly, are all positive things from today. Lots of arms got some solid reps.

Unfortunately got tied up with work and couldn't watch, what's the thing we're going to be upset about after this one?

Payne and Shaffner struck out.

I saw Payne's last at bat but did he have to make any plays in the field? Was surprised when he went in the game.

The No. 14 NC State baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning in a dominant 17-2 victory over Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.

NC State (5-2) quickly erased an early 1-0 deficit with eight runs in the bottom of the first, batting around in the opening inning to score eight times. The Wolfpack lineup forced the Queens' pitching staff to throw 72 pitches in the bottom of the first, drawing seven walks to go along with three hits to take an 8-1 lead into the second inning.

Alec Makarewicz put NC State ahead for good with a two-RBI double down the right-field line, giving the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead. Luke Nixon also logged a two-RBI base hit when he dropped in a single to shallow right field for a 5-1 Wolfpack lead. Josh Hogue recorded the Pack's third two-RBI hit of the inning with a single to center field, stretching the lead to 8-1.

Brandon Butterworth's RBI triple made it 9-1 in the second inning. Queens (3-6) trimmed its deficit to 9-2 before homers from Makarewicz and Drew Lanphere made it 11-2 Wolfpack heading to the fifth. Lanphere's drive to left center was the first home run of his career.

NC State extended its lead to the game's final score with six more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lanphere homered again in the six-run frame, belting his second homer of the day to right field. Jacob Cozart, Makarewicz, Eli Serrano III and Butterworth also all logged RBI in the inning to extend the lead to 17-2.

Wolfpack starting pitcher Cooper Consiglio (1-1) earned the win in his first-career start, tossing four innings while allowing just two runs, one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Consiglio had a predetermined pitch count entering Wednesday's contest, qualifying him for his first win in a Wolfpack uniform.

The Wolfpack bullpen shut out the Royals over the final five innings. Freshmen Chance Mako and Camden Wimbish made their NC State debuts with scoreless innings, while Win Scott, Jacob Halford and Derrick Smith also logged a scoreless frame apiece.

Makarewicz, Lanphere and Luke Nixon led the Wolfpack with three hits and three runs scored apiece. Makarewicz and Lanphere also tied for a team-high with four RBI, while leadoff batter Noah Soles drew three walks in five plate appearances.

NC State's offense has averaged over 12 runs per game in four matchups since opening weekend, reaching double digits in all three of its wins during the stretch.

Robert Nedry and Peyton Young also logged their first-career appearances in Wednesday's 15-run victory. Twenty-two NC State players saw game action.

Queens starting pitcher Andrew White (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing six runs in just 0.1 innings pitched.

UP NEXT
NC State opens a four-game series against Towson on Friday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park. Friday's series opener is set for 3 p.m. All four games will stream live on ACC Network Extra.

The Pack and Tigers will play a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader is set for noon, while game two is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
