This is the copy and paste of Elliott Avent and NC State's record versus league competition against each coach from the time that coach was hired by his current ACC employer.

I have my opinions, as most do, but I have copied and pasted this information here without comment otherwise, so that folks can draw their conclusions without slant one way or another. The opinions listed below are from the original post.

I do hope it creates dialogue and adds context.

Compared to the other 13 coaches when they started at their current schools/when they joined the ACC, Avent ranks:
Overall record: Better than 9 out of 13 coaches
ACC record: Better than 8 out of 13 coaches
ACC Tournament Finals Appearances: Better than 12 out of 13 coaches
ACC Titles: Tied with 8 other coaches with 0 ACC titles. 4 current coaches + Monte Lee previously at Clemson have at least 1 ACC title
NCAA Tournament Appearances: Better than/tied with 8 out of 13 coaches
Super Regional Berths: Better than/tied with 9 out of 13 coaches
CWS Appearances: Better than/tied with 10 out of 13 coaches
CWS Titles: Tied with 12 other coaches with 0 CWS titles. O'Connor at UVA is the only current ACC coach with CWS title
Head to head record: Better than 10 out of 13 coaches

In my opinion the only coaches that have better resumes at their current schools than Avent are O'Connor at UVA, McDonnell at Louisville, and Hall at Georgia Tech, even though he hasn't made it to a Super Regional since 2006, hard to argue with 5 ACC titles in 7 appearances.

Also adding that the combination of Fox/Forbes at UNC has been better than Avent over the same time period but I am not ready yet to say Forbes by himself has been better than Avent. Then obviously Martin Sr had one of the best programs ever while he was at FSU but Jarrett has complete rebuild on his hands now.

Thank you, Rob. Anyone thinking we should nudge Avent into retirement is out of their minds.

So does he just ride it out until he's ready to retire? He's been here a long time so making a couple of CWS is great but zero titles in the ACC is not. That's a really long time to not win anything of significance. We do well against the bottom of the conference and not so great against the top. Longevity isn't necessarily a winning formula for success.

In my opinion, winning two Supers is of high significance. They even get trophies for doing it.

Yeah, the super regionals are huge. Getting to Omaha is a tremendous accomplishment given how grueling that run is. I don't know why some of our fans downplay that accomplishment. Not winning an ACC title sucks, but it's not as though we were winning them regularly before Avent - one in 92 and then you have to go back to the three year run in the 70s. Unlike coaches in our other big sports in similar droughts, he at least has gotten to the championship game at a fairly regular clip, and honestly just really unlucky to have not won it. I'm just tired of this same discussion every year. Fire him, push him out, whatever, everyone can be happy for a few months, and then it will be right back into the same *****ing and moaning in a year or two.

Imagine what Elliott could've done with all the built in advantages that Mike Fox had. Fox walked into a situation where he was getting all the legit NC talent from the dirt bags travel team that Andy Partin could send his way, Scott Boras was funneling HS pitchers to them when he was acting as their advisor before the draft. And let's not forget how the university was helping keep kids eligible like Hobbs Johnson and who knows how many others. No wonder unc and Fox were "better" than NC State and Elliott Avent. They had all the answers to all the tests.

We also played in the same division as Clemson and FSU during the Leggett and Martin Sr heydays. Martin was one of the best ever.

Martin Sr - 18 Super Regional appearances, 12 CWS appearances. Also won 8 ACC championships and 9 regular season championships since Avent took over at NC State.

Jack Leggett - 9 Supers, 4 CWS appearances since Avent took over at State. Poor Jack had to play Mike Martin as well or his numbers would've been much better.

*Wolfpack Baseball - 2021 *NCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!
*Congrats to the 10 win 2021 Wolfpack football team!

I know it's crazy talk to expect a championship from a coach who's been here a quarter century especially given the talent some of those teams have had.

Did you even read Rob's response to what you said? IMO (and lots of people actually knowledgeable about college baseball) winning a super regional is a bigger accomplishment than the ACCT, especially in its current format. Would you trade one of the supers for an ACCT Championship?

Both sides can be right here. Avent has had a very good, consistent career despite substandard facilities and a lack of support from the athletics and school administration. On the other hand, our talent right now is as low as it's ever been, and we are trending down, so it might be time for him to step down and allow the program he loves to get some fresh blood. I do not believe he should be fired, but do believe his time for a dignified exit has come. We owe him our gratitude for running a clean, consistently strong program despite many obstacles of our own creation.

Yes I would trade a super for the ACC Championship, easily. We've not won a championship in a major men's sport in decades. I don't mind to be in the minority for not caring we were one of the final 8 teams in a particular season if we can't win championships either at the conference or national level.

I do appreciate Avent's time with the program but we're not trending in the right direction currently.

I don't particularly like Avent, but on the other hand, I recognize that he's earned the right to say when it's time to go. Kay Yow pretty much tailed off at the end of her tenure, and ain't nobody gonna tell Kay Yow to go (although I will point out she won multiple ACC regular season and tourney titles--she was the reverse of Avent, always underperforming in the NCAAs).

THe other diminsion of this is, does anyone really trust Boo to make a homerun hire if Avent does retire? I must say, I have my doubts...we have nowhere near the money it would take to land someone like Bakich at Clemson.

And, there'd be considerable pressure from the Lee Fowler good old boy network to just hand the job to Chris Hart, which would be a mistake (just like the crowd who wanted to hire Stephanie Glance after Yow stepped down were also mistaken).

HONEST QUESTION: Why is Hart being offered the job a mistake? He handles day-to-day, is in charge of recruiting, and has stayed loyal to NC State when he could have coached elsewhere.

NC State has had four baseball head coaches since WWII. Loyalty and longevity are tenets of the Wolfpack baseball program, and Hart fits that. If you hire him and he bombs, then that is the key to opening the door and looking outside the program -- so you can get the best of both worlds in that scenario, because how administrators treat baseball, and its coaches, is a big factor in where people want to work.

I would not, and it makes no sense to do so in my mind. No one in Virginia is worried about the Cavaliers not winning an ACC title in several years because they have been to the CWS several times since. To be fair, NC State's league title drought is longer, but their lineage is not elite so it goes lock-step with what has happened over the years.

Again, I never want to begrudge anyone the right to post their opinion, but this is just fundamentally wrong to me.

Let's break it down somewhat.

"...our talent right now is as low as it's ever been..."

The talent is what NC State would have had if someone else coached the team. No other coach would have turned down NC State's players or not recruited most of them. Any coach would have taken Green, who was a 15th-round selection out of high school. Most would have taken Gupton, Trice, Candelaria, Groover, Soles, Cozart or etc. NC State is actually a fairly young team. Most of the players return.

Talent is not a problem. If talent alone would have done the job, NC State would have been great in 2014. If you look at the two seasons following 2013 and juxtapose them to the two seasons after 2021, there is not a significant difference in how well the Wolfpack is doing. One team did not make it and the other team is close. That describes both situations.

In 2014 NC State could not hit. In 2023, the Wolfpack has not fielded the ball well.

"...we are trending down..."

What are the criteria for this?

Is it the fact that NC State missed the tournament? If so, missing the tournament is a bummer, but if you hold NCSU to the 2021 standard, you are almost certain to fail. Only two other Wolfpack teams could ever maintain that standard. Historically, this is what happens at NC State. After great teams, they have to reboot somewhat.

Of course, there had to be some form of rebuild. Look at NC State's regular starting eight (sans pitcher) in 2021. How many came back in 2022? Most of the best players left.

Another reason I'm afraid I have to disagree with thinking it trends down is recruiting. Every measurable says that NC State is recruiting exceptionally well in 2023, 2024, and 2025 classes.

I recently talked to a 2025 kid (NOTE: Article coming soon). He pitched a perfect game in the state playoffs (on the road) and is ranked the number five left-handed pitcher in the state in one of the publications.

The 2025 class is massive for NC State in two ways:
1. The talent is astounding.
2. Avent, Hart, and Chrysler basically beat the clock to get the commitments of those players because a new NCAA rule now prohibits coaches from talking to them at this point in their high school career (they are now not far along enough in school).

The following three incoming classes also benefit from the Doak renovations, whatever it ends up being worth. So as the Wolfpack picks up steam, it will play in the nicest facilities it has ever had.

I am telling you all now, do not be surprised if within the next five seasons (2024-2028), NC State makes another one or two runs into the CWS and wins a national title. The Wolfpack is building a giant.

Who knows? NC State may even win an ACC title within the next five seasons too.

100% valid question. Why would it be a mistake? Hart started in 2005 as the Director of Baseball Operations, did that for two years then asked to be a volunteer assistant so he could "coach" more. 2008 was his first season as a full time assistant and around that time NC State had a recruiting problem especially in NC. Go back and look at how many kids from NC we were signing in classes pre-2011. Not many. Suddenly Mike Fox started screwing kids over down the road in CH, many of whom were from NC and Chris Hart also takes over recruiting in 2010. The next year was the 2011 class that included Carlos Rodon, Brett Austin, Trea Turner, Jake Fincher, Logan Ratledge...many more NC kids than we were bringing in previously. There was an opening and Hart jumped all over it. The dude is connected all over Florida from his time playing at FSU for Martin Sr as well as coaching at a JUCO down there.

He's my 1A whenever Avent decides it's time. Justin Haire at Campbell is my 1B.

I wonder if unc fans think promoting Scott Forbes was a mistake? Forbes played for/coached under Fox for over 20 years IIRC. I believe this will be 18 for Hart and Avent.

I've known Scott Forbes since I was a FR in HS when I played American Legion baseball with him and Chris Hart seems to be cut form the same cloth as Scott. I knew Scott was going to be a baseball coach from basically the first time I met him.

Damn Rob, we are aligned on these topics.

The 2023 class has got some really talented arms in it. I've complained about pitching recruiting previously and I think this class has some of those talented arms that we need. I think there's no way Maroudis comes to school (would LOVE to be wrong) but if we can get Chance Mako here that's a great start. Jaxon Lucas, Heath Andrews and Camden Wimbush can bring it. No idea if Wimbush will start on the bump or if he wants to catch but he's got a live arm for sure. Makes me wonder if he'll pitch in college.

The 2024 class has some nasty dudes in it too. Anderson Nance, Drake Purvis, Truitt Manuel (he's a stud HS football player as well), a kid from FL named Ty Head and Devin Fitz-Gerald is one of those coaches son types from FL, switch hitter. His brother plays at ODU and is in the top 15 nationally with 21 bombs. Devin can play.

Can we start a tally for ummm....let's just say, posts of this variety?
I know it's crazy talk to expect a championship from a coach who's been here a quarter century especially given the talent some of those teams have had.
Did you even read Rob's response to what you said? IMO (and lots of people actually knowledgeable about college baseball) winning a super regional is a bigger accomplishment than the ACCT, especially in its current format. Would you trade one of the supers for an ACCT Championship?
Yes I would trade a super for the ACC Championship, easily. We've not won a championship in a major men's sport in decades. I don't mind to be in the minority for not caring we were one of the final 8 teams in a particular season if we can't win championships either at the conference or national level.

I do appreciate Avent's time with the program but we're not trending in the right direction currently.
It's fine to value things differently. NCSU as an institution NEEDS desperately to win any conference title in a major men's sport to end the drought. We're near the top of mediocrity in that regard which is why I'd trade getting far (shy of winning it all of course) in any post season tournament at this point for winning a conference title.

I say that to say I don't take anything away from Avent winning Super's or going to the CWS, those teams deserve the recognition they get for that as it is a heck of an accomplishment.

You are certainly entitled to your opinions and I respect you giving them while choosing to not belittle those who disagree. Amen to you. You're a real Wolfpacker, and will be one of the folks I think about with happiness when NC State does win the ACC.

I will say this though. When NC State wins an ACC title in football, men's basketball, or baseball, it's not going to end any "title drought" talk because that is important to the people that mention it. They have to use that to perpetuate their preferred narrative.

That title drought listing use to include women's basketball. When Wes Moore's teams won ACC titles, antagonists simply pulled his program out that narrative and trimmed it down to the three men's sports.

If Avent wins the ACC title next week, it'll be trimmed down to a title drought in football and men's basketball, and not a celebration of what was just won. That's just how haters work.

One hundred percent correct. Goalposts will simply move to whichever sports haven't won one. And truth be told, even if all of them win one, then a few years after that we'll be talking about those programs falling off and being mediocre.

1997 - present ….no tittles.. teams whose numbers are similar have an ACC tittle not to mention other teams with worse numbers have a tittle.

It gets to the point where something's gotta give if only for sake of change…I know it's baseball but we should have tripped over a tittle by now..

I will tell you what after reading this thread we are certainly a pack divided on this issue.
