The wheels are coming off... what an awful inning. And still only 1 out.

There's no excuse for this team's absolutely atrocious fielding. No ****ing excuse.

We blew this. Said to a friend Whitaker was starting to look tired in the 6th. Should have brought in a new arm at the start of the 7th. And Nelson was shaky from the start. Of course the errors…but damn. Sad to waste such a great effort from Logan.

Villiman should have come in with a 4 to 1 lead in the bottom of the Seventh period.

Elliot has to be pulling his hair out. Some of these fielding errors are unacceptable at this level of college baseball.

Errors and walks is not winning baseball.

giving up 8 runs and counting in the 7th in this game is inexcusable

Naw….we could have needed him more than once…dropped fly in left, Tommy an error, Soles no throw on a shallow fly ball, Groover doesn't cover first, ….should I go on. That's not pitching. That's awful defense.

I don't have a problem with the pitching decisions
Logan was great heading into that inning. Nelson has been good following Whitaker. If you bring in your closer to get 9 outs, you're burning him for the weekended most likely. Just don't give up the grand slam. Anything other than that and you're okay. Just gotta take two this weekend. Think positive.

Agree on Chris that it's too early to bring him in there…but not on Whitaker. He started to get loose with his control in the 6th and all year he's not been a guy that's gone deep into ballgames. Give him the first batter of the 7th maybe…i get the benefit of the doubt cause of how he had pitched…but he showed signs in the 6th that were concerning

Realize there is a lot of youth. They are going to be fine in the long run. Had Louisville on the ropes and let them out of it. Got to learn its hammer time when you have the chance. I honestly think that's on the way as the team matures.

No. 23 NC State baseball (24-12, 10-8 ACC) was unable to hold off a late nine-run surge from No. 11 Louisville (26-11, 10-6 ACC) on Friday night in the series opener at Jim Patterson Stadium, suffering an 11-4 loss.

The result snapped a six-game win streak for the Wolfpack.

The Cardinals plated the first run of the game when Cameron Masterman scored on Christian Knapczyk's RBI single to right field after he led off the frame with a triple to left center.

In the third, Tommy White blasted his 15th home run of the season to left field to give the Pack a 3-1 lead after Devonte Brown and LuJames Groover tallied base hits prior to his at bat.

In his next at bat, which came in the fifth inning, White belted his second homer of the night and 16th of the year to left center to extend the Pack's lead to 4-1. It was his fourth multi-homer game of the season.

Louisville surged back in the seventh with nine runs on five hits and two errors to take a 10-4 lead, and then a bases-loaded walk in the eighth tacked on an additional run. In the final two innings the Cards held the Pack to just two base runners to complete the comeback victory.

White led the offense with a 4-for-5 outing and was responsible for all four runs batted in. Noah Soles (2-for-4) continued his tear at the plate as he has tallied 24 hits in the month of April.

Additionally, Brown went 2-for-4 on the night to contribute to the team's 11 hits in the contest while Groover extended his hit streak to 23 games and his reached base streak to 26.

Starting pitcher Logan Whitaker had a strong night on the bump, going a career-long six innings and surrendering three runs on three hits while matching his career high in strikeouts with seven.

NC State and Louisville will meet for game two of the series Saturday, with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Jim Patterson Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX and there will be an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.

Whittaker threw 10 pitches in the 6th, 7 of which were strikes, including a four pitch strikeout of the last batter in the inning, and he was only at 80 pitches. There was nothing wrong with his control till the 7th.. We can talk about pulling him after the first batter, but up until that inning, he had cruised.

I had more issues with the defense and the mental lapses than the pitching. It was worse than Little League. No one was thinking. We panicked. Avent historically has chosen offense over defense. It cost us last night. Three LF's in the outfield together is an issue on tough plays. That's what happens in choosing all bats over defense. Musical chairs in the infield has improved us some but Tommy struggles a little and Groover seems out of position. I think it's time to try Green in the outfield. A great high school SS should be able to adjust to the outfield quickly. Hit him about 500 fly balls and ground balls and find out. His arm would be the best in the outfield and he is not slow. Soles to LF and Dom to DH would likely improve our defense. Just thinking. Marcy seems better in the outfield than Dom or Soles. Maybe Eisert or Giles or both would improve infield defense. Start the bats, sub late innings for gloves. After last night, it's time to try something different. It cost us first place and the plays I am talking about are too easy to give away first place when good 14 year olds make them.

I like the green to the OF and Dom to DH, it can't get worse out there. But no to Marcy out there right now. Promising young player but him and Dom P are both not good in the OF right now. Soles doesn't worry me as much yet as the other two

Is there some reason Lavoie or Truitt aren't getting a shot in left field?

I think Marcy can throw…Dom and Soles…not so much. But that's what I was thinking…we need some practice on defense badly. For an old baseball guy that was raised on pitching and defense to win low scoring, close games, I suffer watching us play.

My soapbox for today - how much I hate when announcers call us "North Carolina State" despite all of our efforts to shift our branding to NC State. It inevitably results in them calling us North Carolina, which just happened. It's so much easier just to say NC State anyway.
