NCAA TOURNAMENT: Wolfpack Headed to Columbia

May 29, 2023

NC State (35-19, 13-16 ACC) has been selected to the 2023 NCAA College World Series Tournament and will play in the Columbia Regional as the No. 3 seed.

The Wolfpack will be paired against No. 2-seed Campbell (44-13, 22-5 Big South) as tournament play begins Friday at 1 p.m. from Founders Park. Regional host South Carolina (39-19, 16-13 SEC) will open against four-seed Central Connecticut State (36-12, 25-5 NEC). The Columbia Regional is matched against the Gainesville Regional which contains Florida, Connecticut, Texas Tech, and Florida A&M.

One of the more explosive teams in the Southeastern Conference, South Carolina currently sits within the top 10 teams in the country in home runs hit with 110, but the Gamecocks dropped nine of its last 11 regular-season games after starting the season 30-4 overall. South Carolina defeated Georgia in the SEC Tournament before suffering back-to-back losses to LSU and Texas A&M. NC State holds a 35-22 all-time record over South Carolina, but the Gamecocks have the latest victory in Charlotte on April 2, 2019, dowing the Wolfpack, 10-8.

Entering postseason play with many outlets projected they would host, the Camels secured their second straight Big South Championship with back-to-back wins over USC Upstate who took two out of three from Campbell in the final weekend of the regular season. The Wolfpack last faced the Camels on March 2, 2022 when Campbell took the win in Buies Creek, 7-4.

Central Connecticut State heads into the tournament as the automatic qualifier from the Northeastern Conference after winning five games in four days with the final two victories coming against Wagner by a combined margin of 20 runs. Should the teams meet, NC State will face the Blue Devils for the first time in school history.

Stay tuned to Inside Pack Sports for more information as the Wolfpack’s postseason continues.

This will make it interesting for Game 2 with whoever is in the loser's bracket
Those CCS coaches should be fired for putting that kid out there like that. Threw 116 pitches on Thursday and then came back Sunday to throw 115 more in a complete game. Gross.

And I typically don't get fired up about this type of stuff but that is really not good for that kid's arm. But it's mighty sweet of his coaches to give him a full 5 days off this time before trotting him back out there. lol
*Wolfpack Baseball - 2021 *NCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!
*Congrats to the 10 win 2021 Wolfpack football team!

Sadly this happens a lot in college baseball. Look at Vandy's track record of running top pitchers into the ground. Kumar Rocker just had tommy john surgery for another arm injury.

Campbell is a *good* hitting team. UVA, for my money, was/is the best hitting team in the country this year. We held them to 2, 7, and 4. In the Saturday game where they scored 7, Matt went 7 innings - 3 hits- 2 R's (1ER). They jumped on Lawson late and it was out of control. Everett Harris pitched for us that game, no offense to him.

Campbell against tournament teams this season scored an average of 7.7 runs per game, a very good number. And I don't like playing the Jeff Bzdelik "If you take away..." game, but they beat UNCW 24-5 in a game that UNCW used 9 pitchers. Beat ECU 14-13 late in the season and ECU used 9 pitchers. Half that output drops their runs per game to 6.3.

They played ONE weekend series against a tournament team, Louisiana (last 4 in), and scored 5, 8, and 7. Respect for the season they had, and they very well could win the regional, but I like our chances a lot better than what the raw numbers would suggest. Especially on the mound.

I don't like teams that make fielding mistakes. I say mistakes because this team made errors but also missed opportunities for outs that were not errors. Inconsistent pitching and just plain bad defense was with us all year. It's great to be optimistic. Pitch well and clean up the soft fielding and, yes, we will move to the next round. We can hit with any team in this group. Our guys have stuff to prove when they have gloves on.

I agree here. They didn't play an ACC or SEC type schedule. That's why they are not hosting. Their number 1 is a transfer from a big school that throws hard. We normally hit fastballs. He is good. I bet the guys will think he is not the best they have seen AND he hasn't seen many offensive attacks like ours this year. We can win this regional. If our defense doesn't give away outs, with our bats, we are very hard to beat.

The fact that CC State is likely saving their ace who is legit as conference player of the year for them for game 2 makes this game even bigger as loser will probably have to face him in Game 2 to stave off elimination.

Indeed. Could be really bad luck if State has to face the two best pitchers in the region in games 1 and 2.

Similar to wrist bands many teams wear. Has signs or defensive alignments or similar on them.
