NCAA TOURNAMENT: Wolfpack Headed to Columbia

May 29, 2023
120,397

NC State (35-19, 13-16 ACC) has been selected to the 2023 NCAA College World Series Tournament and will play in the Columbia Regional as the No. 3 seed.

The Wolfpack will be paired against No. 2-seed Campbell (44-13, 22-5 Big South) as tournament play begins Friday at 1 p.m. from Founders Park. Regional host South Carolina (39-19, 16-13 SEC) will open against four-seed Central Connecticut State (36-12, 25-5 NEC). The Columbia Regional is matched against the Gainesville Regional which contains Florida, Connecticut, Texas Tech, and Florida A&M.

One of the more explosive teams in the Southeastern Conference, South Carolina currently sits within the top 10 teams in the country in home runs hit with 110, but the Gamecocks dropped nine of its last 11 regular-season games after starting the season 30-4 overall. South Carolina defeated Georgia in the SEC Tournament before suffering back-to-back losses to LSU and Texas A&M. NC State holds a 35-22 all-time record over South Carolina, but the Gamecocks have the latest victory in Charlotte on April 2, 2019, dowing the Wolfpack, 10-8.

Entering postseason play with many outlets projected they would host, the Camels secured their second straight Big South Championship with back-to-back wins over USC Upstate who took two out of three from Campbell in the final weekend of the regular season. The Wolfpack last faced the Camels on March 2, 2022 when Campbell took the win in Buies Creek, 7-4.

Central Connecticut State heads into the tournament as the automatic qualifier from the Northeastern Conference after winning five games in four days with the final two victories coming against Wagner by a combined margin of 20 runs. Should the teams meet, NC State will face the Blue Devils for the first time in school history.

Stay tuned to Inside Pack Sports for more information as the Wolfpack’s postseason continues.

Shtty game, ending but for a team that wasn't even supposed to make the tourney (so I was told here ha) but I don't have much to complain about. I mean I could find stuff but why?

Been a very strange last two seasons but I'm excited to see what we do in the off season. Bring on the silly season!

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Yea, and if a bullfrog had wings, it wouldn't bump its a$$ every time it hopped. Just let it go man. Probably would have won if we hadn't walked 9 or 10 guys, too…. This regional was a microcosm of our entire season. Occasional excellence surrounded by a bunch w t f moments and overall just not playing to our potential.

This roster is due some turnover and fresh blood.

I'm going to get some heat for this, and it's whatever.

Avent has done an incredible job with what he's had to work with facilities wise. He has given his entire life to making NC State a routine Top 25 program and he should have a National Title.

That being said, it feels like this program is leveling out and could use some fresh perspective. The college game has changed, and Avent has adapted where he can, but if feels like we could be left behind quickly. State doesn't seem to play with any edge or passion. I don't know if that's Avent or the players, but something needs to change.

I know there's not a magic pill or a sure fire hire that would make it's a CWS team every year. But, things feel stagnant right now. Feels like all the momentum that was there in 2021 is gone. And maybe that's just baseball being baseball.

Edit to add: This take is not due to todays game going sideways to this point.

I'm not of that opinion personally with Avent. He's fine as the head man and has earned the right to move on when he's ready because I trust he'll make the right decision.

State's lack of arm "talent" IMO is an issue and I often don't like the overall approach for several guys at the plate.

But it is what it is. State's right there and will be able to address problems in the portal.

I agree on the arms...or even lack of development of them. Also, we are working on it, but we don't have the facilities to recruit with half the teams in the field of 64 yet. I'm amazed EA does what he does player wise. He's def a player coach, despite what Soles dad thinks.

I remain unconvinced by that program. We hit into a lot of DPs that any team will make. Theyre very sloppy

Haire or someone on his staff must have figured something out with launch angles that has them competitive at a national level offensively but thats the type of advantage that does not last very long and the top programs will figure out and copy or address with all the tape and analytics available today. Once that advantage goes away, then what?

The Neto kid they had last year was supposed to be a bat before field prospect but he's been very good professionally as a SS so maybe there is something there with scouting but I'd need to see more before signing up for that pitching/defense combo

swing path, its where/how you hit the ball and what vertical angle the ball takes when it leaves the bat. campbell was 5th in the country in homeruns, so maybe they were taught something to help the angle the ball takes leaving the bat

The vertical angle that a ball leaves a hitter's bat.

Haire just put together a team of dudes that know how to hit from all over. He's got dudes from really good JUCOs such as Arizona Western, John Logan, Cowley and Iowa Western. Hell, even Gaston College made the JUCO World Series this year. Campbell has kids from something like 16 different JUCOs. They also have several D1 transfers as well. There's also the instate kids that didn't have the prototypical size that big instate schools wanted like a Lawson Harrill, their Friday starter Kuehler and others. Last year they had Thomas Harrington from Sanford that apparently walked on to Campbell (b/c of Covid) and left a first rounder.

I've said it a million times, there's a ton of baseball talent across NC and the United States.

They are a pretty good team that plays in a fairly weak conference. Thus, numbers are a little inflated. I agree with CLT in that there is a lot of talent in NC that doesn't go to State or UNC. Position players, especially SS's, can be found. There is usually guys missed every year. UNC-W, UNC-CLT, UNC-G, App St and WCU all have good players. Most comparable to ACC guys. The difference is depth in arms on the pitching staff. Campbell's #1 is good but there is a fall off after him, even though the at'em balls made the guy look good today. I really don't think he would fare well for a whole season in the ACC. So, I really don't think Haire did much except evaluate leftover talent well and build an offensive team. Then he found one really good transfer pitcher that hadn't pitched much and was from NC and wanted to be close to home.

It's easy if you evaluate players better than your competitors. To me, that's what he did. I agree, player evaluation travels with the coach and I, too believe he will be successful. The next level though, he may need $$$ to get the players that win games for him as the wins are harder to come by. Championship teams vs winning teams could be tougher to achieve.

He may be. Maybe not. Have seen it plenty of times where a coach gets promoted to a school with good resources and switches how they operate and recruit and fail. Or that what made them successful at a lower level isnt sustainable or allowed at a P5 school. Seems 50/50 most of the time. UGa hasn't exactly been a world beater in the SEC

The next level though, he may need $$$ to get the players that win games for him as the wins are harder to come by. Championship teams vs winning teams could be tougher to achieve.
It's not easy and you know that. haha

If he ends up at UGA, he'll have money to get players.

There was supposed to be a by the easy part. Don't know where it went!
All good brother. I know you've likely forgotten more about baseball than I'll ever know.

That easy, huh?

I'll bet dollars to donuts that Haire will be successful at his next stop, where ever it may be.

Not sure that's the case.....but I can say I am NOT a technology expert.

Haire has done a great job at Campbell. I can see him leaving soon for a bigger place.
