Great showing. Because Fr Morgan Miller ran unattached she doesn't show up in the "official" NC State results, but she placed 14th in 17:11.
The results are deceptively great.

Emily Wisniewski (16:44) was only 10 secs behind winner Bethany (16:34), Ellie Shea (16:48) only 14 secs behind. Granted the pace didn't pick up until the 3.5k mark but still very promising.
Where did this performance from Ellie Shea come from? Awesome to see her back.
Our depth really shown up with 8 runners breaking 17:15. I've been saying this is the deepest team we've fielded.
new recruits Maddie, Mallory, Brooke, and Morgan - as a whole - exceeded expectations
on the down side, Rachel looked great until the pace accelerated. Pace was roughly 3:25/1k until the 3k mark then accelerated to 3:10/1k to the finish.

Very pleasantly surprised with the performances of Wisniewski and Shea. If they continue and build on performances like that, they could both be scorers at nationals of the caliber needed to win the title. Makes me feel a lot better, if worse case scenario, hypothetically, Grace Hartman or another top runner were out.

Shea didn't complete 1 XC race last year. Wasn't in ANY of the pics. She must have put some serious training in the summer. TBH, I'm having a hard time comprehending how this was possible. 2 years ago she did 17:39; today 16:48!

Shea looked great. I watched from the bottom of the course and saw them pass at the 600, 1M and 4k mark. She was leading at 1k and 4k and looks much stronger. She's had injuries since freshman year and couldn't get through two training cycles. Now looks stronger and healthy. Was worried because after they passed at 4k I followed the times live on Flashresults and she didn't appear among the finishers for a few minutes, then it corrected and showed her in the top 8. Was worried she fell or something because it was pitch black in the woods.

It's impossible to predict how healthy everybody will be on November 21. Could be a virus running through the team at that time. Several might be having female problems at the time that could affect their results. Now having said that, we did not have Gapes, Hartman, Engelhardt, or Putnam race yesterday and we dominated the meet. My confidence right now is very high. I know very little about the running and the training part, but Laurie Henes has a pretty good track record of getting the most out of her team and pressing the right buttons.

Injuries can always cause problems, but right now I think we are in very good shape for Terre Haute.

Don't overanalyze rustbuster meets run in the dark in the middle of a double threshold block of training. That was not racing, that was almost certainly a sub-threshold effort for 3 or 4 kilometers as darkness set in, likely with a bit of surging over the last kilometer.

We will learn a bit more about who is healthy and thriving at Joe Piane in 2 weeks and we might be able to develop a working thesis about our team and the Top 10 or so a month from now at Pre-Nationals. Enjoy the process and the ride Henes is taking us on yet again.

If there's nothing to learn from this race, we should have run our #21 to #25 runners and rest everybody else!

And yes I tend to over analyze (terrible habit learned at work). I'd stop.

It's all good, I'm guilty of it too sir.

I liked what we got from the team yesterday evening, with Bethany, Angelina, Emily, Ellie and Briley doing enough to hold USC off in the dark.

Mallory, Morgan and Maddie were pleasant Freshman surprises.

Jojo, Chandler and BrookeC did just fine for this race under these conditions.

Rachel and Jessica's final 1.8K were NOT good, at best.

BrookeR electing to DNF was hopefully just a precautionary measure, due her foot injury history and darkness.

Kaylie and Daniela's DNS … ugh.

Back to the grind of double thresholds and let's see what we can do over the manicured golf course in South Bend in 2 weeks. Joe Piane is still only a 5K, so it won't be all that instructive.
