NC State women's soccer started its 2024 season with a 0-0 draw against App State at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh on Thursday.
The Wolfpack (0-0-1) was proud to secure a point in a physical season opener with a draw amidst an excited crowd in Raleigh. After a muddled 3-9-6 2023 campaign, the red-and-white took it to the Mountaineers (0-0-1), firing eight shots on goal. Despite the effort, NC State failed to find the net, but it did manage to secure a shutout on opening night.
With a slew of new faces on his team, head coach Tim Santoro emphasized the importance of his team finding its niche and testing new strategies in the early parts of its 2024 season.
"I've known throughout the preseason that it was going to be a work in progress, both with personnel and with what we're doing," Santoro said. "So you got to try to find some goals while you're in this process, and we will. The good thing is, it's a shutout. We didn't give up a goal. I didn't feel super threatened, so that's a positive. We just got to find ways to put the ball in."
Graduate midfielder Jaiden Thomas will play a key role in the Wolfpack's journey to gel early this season. After a season-ending knee injury weeks before the start of the team's 2023 season, Thomas made an emotional return to the pitch at Dail Soccer Stadium.
"It was so surreal," Thomas said. "I'm so excited to be back and playing with this team. It's a great group of girls, and I'm really fortunate to be surrounded by so many people that love me and support me. And I just felt so much love going back on the field."
Like many of her other teammates throughout the game, Thomas was subbed in and out multiple times in the Pack's match with the Mountaineers. Santoro took advantage of substitutions throughout the bout, testing different formations, strategies and personnel combinations.
While the Pack threatened with attacks from veteran senior midfielder Annika Wohner and sophomore Hannah Jibril, it didn't find enough offensive traction to seriously threaten its opponents. By the end of the contest, NC State tallied four shots on goal and four corner kicks, but for Santoro, figuring out how to make his offense click is part of his squad's journey this season.
"Our attack needs some work," Santoro said. "It's finding that personnel. We haven't found that yet what the combination is going to be. I think once we do that, I think we can be pretty tight in the back. But we got to get our attack sorted out."
While NC State's attack didn't function to the fullest, the Pack was able to move the ball effectively and defend with efficiency. The Mountaineers weren't able to get a shot on goal, with the Wolfpack's defense shutting down their offense nearly every time they got near the back line. Junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas had a quiet night in between the posts as she and her defense dealt with eight total shots.
Both Thomas and Santoro praised the Wolfpack's depth as a strength this season. After being decimated by injuries and a lack of depth in 2023, NC State aims to take advantage of its plethora of talent in 2024. More importantly, Thomas and her team are eager to continue building their team chemistry throughout the start of the season.
"I think we moved the ball around well," Thomas said. "We have a deep roster, I think all the girls can come in and play really strong, and everyone did. They came in and worked hard. We're still learning how to play together. … We have a lot of freshmen, we have a lot of transfers, but we're all gelling super well. We have great team chemistry off the field, and I think it translates onto the field."
By the time the final horn sounded, NC State shut out its opponents, but against a physical Mountaineer front, the Pack lacked on the offensive side. Despite this, Santoro saw flashes of quality play to build off of going forward.
"I saw glimpses," Santoro said. "We saw some good stretches, but then we got caught up in some of the stuff that they do. It can kind of be hectic, and we got caught up in that. But when we settled the game down, I was comfortable with it. We just have to be more dangerous when we have the ball. And we got to some dangerous areas, but then we weren't dangerous."
After its 0-0 draw with the Mountaineers, NC State will face another in-state opponent in ECU on Sunday, Aug. 18. Kickoff against the Pirates is set for 7 p.m. as the Wolfpack seeks a full three points in its potential first win of the season.
"There's definitely a lot that we need to work on," Thomas said. "It wasn't our best, and we know that moving forward we're going to work to come out stronger against ECU on Sunday. But by all means, we're happy with the performance tonight. We'll clean up some things tomorrow and just keep going at it."
