The NC State women's soccer team recorded a 0-0 draw against App State in Thursday night's season opener at Dail Soccer Stadium.

NC State (0-0-1) recorded all four shots on goal in the scoreless draw, three of which came from the freshmen duo of Antonella Mazziotto and Janet Okeke.

Mazziotto created space just outside the 18-yard and fired a shot on goal in the 36th minute, forcing App State goalkeeper Sarah Wommack to make a leaping save to keep the game scoreless. The Mountaineers (0-0-1) responded with the final two shots of the half.

In the 53rd minute, Annika Wohner flipped a ball into Okeke's path down the right wing for a breakaway opportunity. Okeke blasted a shot from just inside the box to force Wommack to make her third save of the night. Ten minutes later, Okeke directed an overheard kick toward goal for her second shot on net.

App State almost notched a later winner in the 86th minute when Izzi Wood's direct free kick sailed just wide of the right post. Wood paced the Mountaineers with three shots.

Wolfpack goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas registered her fourth career shutout in Thursday's scoreless draw. The Wolfpack and Mountaineers tied with eight shots apiece.

Eight NC State players made their debuts Yuna Aoki, Mana Nakata, Abi Hugh, Alivia Kelly, Paige Tolentino, Okeke and Mazziotto. Aoki, Nakata, Hugh, Kelly and Okeke all made their first starts in a Wolfpack uniform.

NC State women's soccer started its 2024 season with a 0-0 draw against App State at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh on Thursday.
The Wolfpack (0-0-1) was proud to secure a point in a physical season opener with a draw amidst an excited crowd in Raleigh. After a muddled 3-9-6 2023 campaign, the red-and-white took it to the Mountaineers (0-0-1), firing eight shots on goal. Despite the effort, NC State failed to find the net, but it did manage to secure a shutout on opening night.
With a slew of new faces on his team, head coach Tim Santoro emphasized the importance of his team finding its niche and testing new strategies in the early parts of its 2024 season.

"I've known throughout the preseason that it was going to be a work in progress, both with personnel and with what we're doing," Santoro said. "So you got to try to find some goals while you're in this process, and we will. The good thing is, it's a shutout. We didn't give up a goal. I didn't feel super threatened, so that's a positive. We just got to find ways to put the ball in."
Graduate midfielder Jaiden Thomas will play a key role in the Wolfpack's journey to gel early this season. After a season-ending knee injury weeks before the start of the team's 2023 season, Thomas made an emotional return to the pitch at Dail Soccer Stadium.
"It was so surreal," Thomas said. "I'm so excited to be back and playing with this team. It's a great group of girls, and I'm really fortunate to be surrounded by so many people that love me and support me. And I just felt so much love going back on the field."
Like many of her other teammates throughout the game, Thomas was subbed in and out multiple times in the Pack's match with the Mountaineers. Santoro took advantage of substitutions throughout the bout, testing different formations, strategies and personnel combinations.
While the Pack threatened with attacks from veteran senior midfielder Annika Wohner and sophomore Hannah Jibril, it didn't find enough offensive traction to seriously threaten its opponents. By the end of the contest, NC State tallied four shots on goal and four corner kicks, but for Santoro, figuring out how to make his offense click is part of his squad's journey this season.

"Our attack needs some work," Santoro said. "It's finding that personnel. We haven't found that yet what the combination is going to be. I think once we do that, I think we can be pretty tight in the back. But we got to get our attack sorted out."
While NC State's attack didn't function to the fullest, the Pack was able to move the ball effectively and defend with efficiency. The Mountaineers weren't able to get a shot on goal, with the Wolfpack's defense shutting down their offense nearly every time they got near the back line. Junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas had a quiet night in between the posts as she and her defense dealt with eight total shots.
Both Thomas and Santoro praised the Wolfpack's depth as a strength this season. After being decimated by injuries and a lack of depth in 2023, NC State aims to take advantage of its plethora of talent in 2024. More importantly, Thomas and her team are eager to continue building their team chemistry throughout the start of the season.
"I think we moved the ball around well," Thomas said. "We have a deep roster, I think all the girls can come in and play really strong, and everyone did. They came in and worked hard. We're still learning how to play together. … We have a lot of freshmen, we have a lot of transfers, but we're all gelling super well. We have great team chemistry off the field, and I think it translates onto the field."
By the time the final horn sounded, NC State shut out its opponents, but against a physical Mountaineer front, the Pack lacked on the offensive side. Despite this, Santoro saw flashes of quality play to build off of going forward.
"I saw glimpses," Santoro said. "We saw some good stretches, but then we got caught up in some of the stuff that they do. It can kind of be hectic, and we got caught up in that. But when we settled the game down, I was comfortable with it. We just have to be more dangerous when we have the ball. And we got to some dangerous areas, but then we weren't dangerous."
After its 0-0 draw with the Mountaineers, NC State will face another in-state opponent in ECU on Sunday, Aug. 18. Kickoff against the Pirates is set for 7 p.m. as the Wolfpack seeks a full three points in its potential first win of the season.
"There's definitely a lot that we need to work on," Thomas said. "It wasn't our best, and we know that moving forward we're going to work to come out stronger against ECU on Sunday. But by all means, we're happy with the performance tonight. We'll clean up some things tomorrow and just keep going at it."

The non-season when players did not return due to COVID really hurt recruiting and as others have posted, there are no players that can create shots.

NC State women's soccer celebrated its 2024 senior night on Sunday, honoring four Wolfpack seniors moments before its bout with ECU in just its second game of the season.

The Pack hoped to secure its first victory of the year after opening its 2024 campaign with a draw against App State. Instead, the Pirates plundered the Pack's senior night, swabbing the deck with its in-state rivals in a 1-0 result at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.

Both offensively and defensively, ECU (1-0-0) dominated in the first half, scoring the only goal of the contest in the 38th minute. Despite NC State's (0-1-1) improved second half performance that saw a burst of quality chances halfway through the period, the Wolfpack still wasn't able to find its first goal of the season.

Before kickoff, head coach Tim Santoro and his team celebrated senior night, honoring senior defender Fernanda Soto, senior midfielder Annika Wohner, senior defender Brianna Weber and senior midfielder Eliza Rich.

Soto, Weber and Wohner have all seen significant play time while wearing the red and white, earning their status as three of the team's most impactful, fully fledged veterans with their contributions over the past three seasons under Santoro. While the group of seniors' night didn't go the way they planned, they were greeted with a loud ovation from the crowd at Dail Soccer Stadium during the ceremony.

After failing to score in its 0-0 draw against the Mountaineers on Thursday, NC State was in a desperate search for its now-elusive first goal. Instead, the home side surrendered its first goal after shutting out App State in the season opener.

Despite some chances created by corner kicks and a near-miss from Soto, NC State struggled to connect the dots offensively in the first half. Meanwhile, ECU was able to force pressure, outshooting the Wolfpack 10-4 after the first 45 minutes.

While the Pirates only fired two shots on target, that was all the visitors needed to get on the board. After earning a free kick in the Pack's defending third, ECU sent a perfectly placed cross right to the Pirates' Abby Sowa, who launched a point-blank header at NC State junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas.

Pratapas' quick reflexes were enough to save Sowa's first shot, but not her second. Sowa's header ricocheted off Pratapas and right back to the Pirate, who smashed her second attempt into the left side of the net for first blood on senior night.

In the second half, NC State was able to shut down ECU more efficiently on the defensive side, holding the Pirates to only one shot. This worked in favor of the Wolfpack as it was presented with more opportunities to net the equalizer NC State had five shots on goal in the second half but, despite the side's determined efforts, none went through the net.

NC State did find a burst of offensive momentum generated from several of its best attackers, though, one of which was graduate midfielder Abi Hugh. The Marshall transfer nearly struck for a goal and delivered an expertly placed cross into the box while playing on the left wing. Still, despite Hugh's intense efforts and determination, NC State kept coming up empty.

One of the Pack's chances came from sophomore forward Hannah Jibril. After the Wolfpack gained possession of the ball in Pirate territory, Jibril was in prime position to receive a breakaway pass and score, but as soon as she received the ball, she was called for offsides.

The last opportunity came by way of sophomore forward Jade Bordeleau, who fired NC State's most promising shot of the night. However, her attempt rattled off the post, forcing another frustrated exhale from the crowd at Dail.

By the time the final horn sounded, the Pirates had hung on for a 1-0 season-opening win in Raleigh. NC State fell to 0-1-1 after the intra-state showdown, and will continue to search for its first goal of the season as it sets out on a two-game road trip.

The Wolfpack will make the drive to nearby Buies Creek, North Carolina on Thursday, Aug. 22 to face Campbell in its first road match of the 2024 season. Kickoff against the Camels is set for 7 p.m.

The NC State women's soccer team dropped its road opener 2-1 at Campbell on Thursday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

NC State's late comeback fell short at Campbell (1-1-1) after Taylor Chism's goal in the 72nd minute cut the Camels' lead to 2-1. The Wolfpack (0-2-1) sliced Campbell's lead in half on its 11th corner kick of the night. Paige Tolentino whipped in a cross from the near corner flag before Chism met the cross for the Pack's opening goal in the 72nd minute.

The Wolfpack fired four of the game's final five shots following Chism's goal, but the Pack could not find the equalizer. NC State outshot Campbell 23-6 on the night and logged all 13 of the match's corners.

The Wolfpack opened the match with two shots in the opening 12 minutes, highlighted by a shot on goal from Annika Wohner. Freshman Antonella Mazziotto threaded a ball into Wohner before Wohner fired a shot toward the bottom-left corner of Sierra Vance's goal. Vance lunged to her right and denied Wohner of the opening goal.

Campbell then scored the opener less than a minute later when Alivia Kelly's

clearance struck the chest of Kaleigh Backlund. Backlund's block landed in the back of NC State's net for a 1-0 Campbell lead in the 13th minute.

NC State almost grabbed the equalizer two minutes later when Mazziotto's shot from close range was cleared off the line. Abi Hugh then cut inside and unleashed a right-footed effort toward the Campbell goal in the 25th minute, but Vance once again repelled the Wolfpack threat.

NC State outshot Campbell 10-1 in the first half and recorded all six corners of the first 45 minutes.

The Camels doubled their lead on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Alyssa Tucker converted the spot kick after drawing a foul from Tolentino in the box.

Mazziotto led the Pack with seven shots, while Hugh led NC State with two shots on target.
