The NC State volleyball team fell to top-ranked Pitt in straight sets Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.

The Pack moves to 14-12 on the season and 9-9 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Breaking Down the Match

• The Panthers led from the start, taking a 5-2 lead. The Wolfpack tied the opening frame 13-all to start a back-and-forth battle, but Pitt continued to dominate.
• The Pack tallied six attacking errors in the opening frame as Pitt took the set, 25-18.
• The Wolfpack struggled to gain momentum in set two, at one point trailing by 10. Head coach Luka Slabe used both of his timeouts early with hopes of regrouping the Pack. Pitt built up a 13-point lead that the Pack could not overcome and took set two, 25-12.
• The Panthers struggled from the service line in the second frame, recording six errors.
• NC State kept the beginning of the third set close and did not let the Panthers lead by more than one point, tying the frame one several occasions.
• A 4-0 scoring run pushed Pitt ahead, 10-7 and forced NC State to use an early timeout. The Wolfpack was unable to slow the Panthers who would later take set three, 25-17, after a 3-0 scoring run.

The NC State volleyball team is set to host Miami for senior day on Wednesday, Nov. 26 before wrapping up the season at No. 10 SMU on Saturday, Nov. 29.

The Pack will host the Hurricanes on Wednesday at 2pm. Fans are encouraged to remain in their seats following the conclusion of the match as the Wolfpack will honor its six seniors -- Madison Williams, Naomi Cabello, Skye Stokes, Martyna Leoniak, Jada Allen, Amanda Rice. Those attending the match will need to utilize the virtual parking permit attached above to park on campus.

Relieved they got the win today over Miami, for the morale of the team and program in the offseason and going to next year. At least they will finish with a winning overall record and no worse than an even conference record.

The home loss against SMU last Friday was a huge missed opportunity, and disheartening. They won the first set against SMU quite easily, and then were leading relatively comfortably almost the entire 2nd set (by 2-3 points about the whole way) until the very end of the set, when they sort of choked and gave it away. Then they ended up losing in 5 sets. I know they lost Groom to injury in the 2nd set, but they still should have won that one.

The NC State volleyball team conquered Miami, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon in Reynolds Coliseum for the final home match of the 2024 campaign.

The Pack moves to 15-12 on the season and 10-9 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Breaking Down the Match

• The Wolfpack opened the afternoon with a back-and-forth battle with the Hurricanes. The two teams exchanged the lead five times as neither team could gain more than a two-point lead throughout the opening frame.
• A kill by junior outside hitter Ava Brizard allowed NC State to take set one, 26-24.
• Junior outside hitter Courtney Bryant led all scorers with six kills through the opening frame.
• The Pack started the second frame with a 3-1 lead over the Canes, but Miami quickly tied things four-all. A battle began, with the Wolfpack leading by two points at most on several occasions.
• Miami tallied six attacking errors in the set.
• A block by senior middle blocker Jada Allen allowed NC state to finish set two on top, 25-20.
• Senior Amanda Rice and Bryant each tallied 10 kills through the second frame.
• Despite NC State leading by five points during the third set, an 11-3 scoring run by Miami allowed the Canes to take set three, 25-21 and extend the meeting.
• Rice and Bryant combined for 28 kills through the third frame.
• The Pack trailed to start the fourth set until a service ace by junior Sydney Daniels tied things 12-all. The Wolfpack would go on to lead but Miami tied the final frame two more times before NC State sealed the deal. The Pack took the fourth set, 25-20 and claimed the match 3-1.
• Rice's 19 kills and 20 digs marked her first career double double.
• Stokes three service aces marked the eighth match this season that she has tallied three or more aces.
• The win marks the 15th of the season, 10th in conference play, 815th overall in program history, 213th in conference play in program history, and 77th under head coach Luka Slabe.

Wolfpack just took down #10 SMU on the road. This is HUGE, historically speaking, for our program. I think this is now only the 3rd win over a top 25 ranked team in program history. And only the 2nd over a top 10 team.

I didn't watch SMU other than their matches against us, but I don't see how they were a top 10 team. We should have beat them at home a week ago too, if not for choking it away, and losing in a 5 setter.

Looking at the stats for this match, we were clearly the better team, with 56 kills to their 48. The thing that made it close was us having 19 service errors, to their 8.

Haven't been following this closely, but reading comments that this win could push us into a shot for a bid to the NCAA tourney.

Highlights of the road upset of #10 SMU:

Regarding the possibility of being selected for the NCAA Tournament...FWIW, in the highlight video above (at 4:13-4:25), the commentator says during the match that NC State "feels good about their resume, but a win tonight would ASSURE a spot for the Wolfpack, most likely".

I haven't been following volleyball close enough or long enough to have a good opinion about how likely our chances really are. But after getting screwed in the selection last season, even with what the commentator said above, I'm still not all that confident.
