Solid win over VCU in straight sets. I was there and thought it was a really good crowd for a non P4 opponent...I estimated 2,000 people while I was at the match (1,896 officially per GoPack).

NC State volleyball steamrolls VCU 3-0 to start Summit Hospitality Group Open

Despite the 3-0 victory, Slabe and his team weren't completely satisfied with the performance.

"It's a good win, a win that we got to take and be happy about," Slabe said. "But our standards at NC State volleyball are much higher than what we showed tonight and our players need to realize it. … I want them to show our fans and themselves a little bit more. It's all the little plays that maybe the average fan doesn't see, but us coaches and players know how important those little things are."

"They came out serving tough," Slabe said. "We were late with adjusting and realizing that is kind of one area where we need to kind of come [out] better. … We cannot wait 10, 15 points before we start thinking about it, it's a number one priority. Pass well, serve tough and life is much easier."

Slow and inconsistent starts have been a theme for the Wolfpack to start the year and will be a problem if they aren't addressed by the time ACC play comes around. Three out of the top four teams are in the ACC. The Pack play all three of them, and the group can't afford to give these tough serving teams a jump out of the gate.

  • NC State took set one 25-19. Opposite Amanda Rice and outside hitter Ava Brizard each tallied five kills to lead the Pack in the opening frame.

  • With the Chanticleers leading 24-13, the Wolfpack started a six-point rally to minimize the Chants lead to seven. A kill by Agata Lesiak ended the third set with Coastal on top, 25-18. Rice led the Pack with five kills and a .308 hitting percentage.

It was 14-13 in NC State's favor in the fifth set after dropping the second and third sets. The Wolfpack had come back to barely claim the fourth set 25-22 and looked to take the match holding serve. Senior opposite hitter Amanda Rice was at the baseline and with the chance to ice the game when the Pack committed three errors in a row.

A 14-13 lead quickly evaporated into a 3-2 defeat with two consecutive attack errors crushing NC State volleyball's (5-3) hopes of a come-from-behind victory against Coastal Carolina (4-7).

"We were just lacking in energy at times, but I know we really turned it around in the fourth set and the fifth set was there," Rice said. "It's just unfortunate the way that it happened."

A common theme over the past few matches for the Pack has been slow starts. In each of the first three sets the Pack went down four, five and seven points respectively within the first 20 points of the set.

"I don't know what it is between the first and second set," Rice said. "Maybe we get too comfortable or just know we're the better team and we're hoping things just carry over, but it doesn't work like that."

"We can't just keep saying that we're fighting for energy the entire time because good Division I programs don't do that, and that's where we want to be," Rice said.

"I'm really proud of how resilient we were," Rice said. "I wish we had capitalized on that a little earlier."

"I'm glad that we had a bit of a wake-up call," Rice said. "ACC play is a lot more elevated and especially when we play Stanford and Cal on our second opening weekend. I hope we're ready for facing some kind of thing where we have to go at the jump if we're expecting to win."

The Wolfpack kickstarts ACC play at home against Virginia Tech on Friday at 7 p.m.

Wolfpack takes down UVa 3 sets to 1 at home in Reynolds, and we played pretty well IMO. Good crowd on hand too, probably around 2,000.

Set point to win the 3rd set.

It's crazy if you look at the history versus Virginia and VT. The Wolfpack currently has a 12 match winning streak versus VT going back to 2015, and a 13 match winning streak against Virginia going back to 2016. But prior to that, NC State was woeful against both teams -- winning only 6 of the previous 33 meetings against Virginia going back to 1999, and 3 of the previous 22 meetings against VT going back to 2003.

Huge turnaround in the program around 2015-2016.

Wolfpack wins the 3rd set 25-22. They controlled the set most of the way, leading by as many as four a couple times (17-13 and 23-19).

Correction on that first set score. It was 22-25...the score must have been updated after I first saw it. I'm not watching this on a stream. I'm just following the live stats.

After 3 sets, looking at the the team stats, it's almost dead even...with NC State at a 0.244 hit % and Stanford with a 0.246 hit %. Very close match through 3 sets. The Wolfpack could have very easily won that 2nd set...and be up 2 sets to 1.
