Recap
NC State volleyball knocks a set off of No.13 Georgia Tech in 3-1 loss

NC State volleyball's 10-game win streak was snapped in an exhilarating 3-1 loss in Atlanta, against the No. 13 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Despite the loss, the Pack was able to win one set against a nationally ranked team, which is an accomplishment of its own.

The Wolfpack (11-2, 1-1 ACC) came into this game riding a high after beating Clemson 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 22, while Georgia Tech (11-1, 2-0 ACC) was on a three-game win streak. Junior outside hitter Martyna Leoniak led the red-and-white with 17 kills a new season high and was followed closely by junior opposite hitter Amanda Rice with 15.

The loss might have snapped the Pack's winning streak, but NC State isn't contemptuous with the result. Up against a top-15 team, the red-and-white was able to hold its own for the majority of the game, keeping the Yellow Jackets' defense on its toes.

The first set saw the momentum on the Pack's side of the court, as a 4-1 start got the game going for the visiting team. Junior middle blocker Jada Allen kept the momentum on the serving line as she tallied three service aces in the first set alone. NC State kept the lead until Georgia Tech tied it at 7-7, but from there it was a back-and-forth battle. The Pack went on a 5-0 tear at the end of the set to go from 24-18 to 24-23 in an attempt to stave off a Yellow Jacket win, but ultimately the home team came out on top.

The second set was similar to the first complete with a service ace from senior defensive specialist Skye Stokes but the Yellow Jackets stayed ahead for the majority of the set. The Pack was able to go on two 4-0 scoring runs, which are hard to come by in the ACC.

In the third set, both teams continued to battle hard to stay on top. Both the Pack and Yellow Jackets struggled with errors NC State finished the set with six attack errors and four service errors. To the surprise of the home crowd, the red-and-white unexpectedly lit fire and knocked a set off of the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets.

However, Georgia Tech took the fourth and final set 25-21, finishing the game 3-1. 18 of the 21 points NC State scored this set came off of kills, showing the Wolfpack's offensive capabilities.

ACC play continues this week for the Wolfpack as Notre Dame comes to Raleigh to take on the red-and-white on Friday, Sept. 29. First serve is set for 1 p.m

Returning to Reynolds Coliseum for its first home ACC match of the 2023 campaign, NC State volleyball defeated visiting Notre Dame 3-0 in a Friday matinee match. The Wolfpack overcame multiple six-point deficits in the third set to prevent the match from going into a fourth and improved to 12-2 on the year and 2-1 in league action.

NC State also remained unbeaten in home action this season, moving to 6-0 in matches played inside Reynolds Coliseum.

Neither team led by more than a point in the opening set until NC State went up 11-9. The separation was enough to keep the Pack in front for the remainder of the set, and the Pack scored six of the last seven points of the frame to come out on top 25-18.

Notre Dame took an early 2-0 lead in the second set, but the Pack responded by firing off four points in a row to go up 4-2. A 3-0 run with the match tied at seven put NC State in front 10-7 and forced Notre Dame into using a timeout, and the Wolfpack cruised from there to ultimately win the second set 25-15. The Fighting Irish's 15 points marked the fewest that NC State has given up in a set through three ACC matches.

The third-set dramatics started off with Notre Dame going up 5-1 and the Wolfpack using its first timeout of the match. NC State went down by six points multiple times in the third, including as late as 20-14, but the Pack used the energy of its home crowd to chip away at the deficit. Down 21-16, NC State then rallied off six of the next seven points once again to tie the match at 22. Notre Dame took a timeout and won the first point out of that break to go up 23-22, but the Wolfpack took the final three points of the match with a kill by Courtney Bryant and two by Amanda Rice to seal the deal and take the third set 25-23.

Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Williams led the way with 11 kills and finished with a .554 hitting percentage. Bryant led the way defensively with five blocks, while adding seven kills offensively. Fifth year setter Kristen McDaniel led the setters with 14 assists and added 10 digs to the books. Senior Skye Stokes added two service aces to mark her ninth game this season with one or more.

The Pack returns to Reynolds on Sunday, Oct. 1 to host fifth-ranked Louisville to round out the weekend at home. The match is set to start at 4 p.m. and will be televised nationally on the ACC Network.

Some last volleyball thoughts for the evening:

I'm told this is the biggest win in program history, but if you didn't tell me which team was nationally ranked, I'd have never doubted it was NC State.

The atmosphere in Reynolds was terrific. You Wolfpack fans are something.

Program win for
@CoachSlabe
and
@PackVball
. #5 Louisville has been to two straight Final Fours, was last year's national runner-up, and was 75-5 since the start of the 2021 season prior to today.

Pack now 13-2 and will be back home Oct. 13 & 15.

Hope to see you in Reynolds!

I'm fairly new to following the NC State volleyball team (just last year), but I've been following the volleyball team pretty closely this year and have gone to a few matches in Reynolds already. I certainly didn't expect them to beat Louisville, but definitely didn't want to miss this match because I felt like this team was going to be pretty good this year, and so they had a chance, and I didn't want to miss it if we pulled off the upset. I had no idea we had never even beaten a ranked team in Reynolds.

The crowd was unbelievable. I don't know if it was a record crowd, but it had to be around 3,000. As I think I may have said in this thread earlier, college volleyball is one of those sports that I love to watch even if NC State is not involved. It's a great/fun sport to watch, just for the nature of the sport itself. And to have the Wolfpack program gaining momentum and becoming good...very exciting.

I have watched almost all of the games. They have definitely improved over the last 10-12 matches.

Not sure about the strength of schedule, but that record should be getting us close to being ranked, shouldn't it?

The NC State volleyball team (13-2, 3-1) etched its name in the record books after upsetting No. 5 Louisville (12-2, 3-1) in four sets Sunday afternoon to hand the Cardinals their second loss of the season. The win is the first in program history over a top-five opponent, first over a ranked opponent in Reynolds Coliseum, and only the second win over a nationally ranked opponent in the program's 47-year history.

The last time the Cardinals fell to an unranked opponent was in 2019 when they lost to Florida State in four sets. The Wolfpack held the Cardinals to a season low .164 hitting percentage, and Louisville's 15 points in the fourth set marked their the second lowest scored this season.

Playing in front of a home crowd of 2,870, the Pack established the tone in the first set as it was only the second time in series history that the Pack won a set in a match against the Cardinals in Raleigh.

The match proved to be a battle from the start as neither team led by more than a handful of points through the first two sets. The Cardinals struggled from the service line throughout the evening, recording a total of 11 errors.

By the middle of the third set, three members of the Pack were hitting over .400 Amanda Rice, Madison Williams and Ava Brizard. The trio recorded several kills to help push the Wolfpack ahead.

The third set was the only one in which Louisville ever took a significant lead over the Wolfpack, but NC State didn't back down. The Pack came with a fire under it in set four, forcing the Cardinals to use both timeouts early in the set. The Wolfpack went on an 8-4 run to close the fourth set on top.

Rice, a junior outside hitter, led the way with 16 kills after hitting .433 on the evening and added four blocks to her stat line. Brizard added 14 kills and recorded only one hitting error, while Williams finished with 11 kills. Fifth-year setter Kristen McDaniel led the setters with 28 assists and added 14 digs.

The Wolfpack hits the road to take on Miami and Florida State in the third week of conference play. NC State will face the Hurricanes on Friday, Oct. 6 and the Seminoles on Sunday, Oct. 8.

The energy was palpable as Wolfpack fans filled Reynolds Coliseum for the highly anticipated matchup, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for both players and spectators alike.

"It was just electric; I have never seen that many fans in here before," Rice said. "At this rate we should just be a volleyball school."
