Volleyball goes 2-0 in first day of Bobcat Invitational

NC State volleyball kept its six-match win streak alive as it went 2-0 at the Bobcat Invitational in Athens, Ohio. The Pack (7-1) took on the William and Mary Tribe (5-4) early in the morning and then Ohio University (4-4) in the evening, swiftly defeating both.

Game one vs. William and Mary: 3-0
The doubleheader started off at 10 a.m. against the Tribe, and the Pack took care of business quickly and efficiently. Sophomore outside hitter Ava Brizard came out in full force, leading the team with 13 kills and helping out on defense with two block assists. Junior middle blocker Jada Allen led the team with four block assists herself and was a ball of energy on the court as the team took the first set 25-13.

The second set was a struggle for the red-and-white, as the team had to battle in extra points to secure the win. The set went back and forth with neither team securing a long point streak, but eventually NC State secured a 2-0 lead. As the clock ticked down to the third set, NC State was back on its A-game. Junior opposite hitter Amanda Rice tallied up five kills this set alone, and graduate setter Kristen McDaniel put up back-to-back service errors.

Game two vs. Ohio University: 3-1

Riding high off of the earlier win, the red-and-white kept the momentum rolling. Rice quickly became the MVP of the match, hitting a career-high 18 kills and finishing the game with six block assists, followed by Brizard with 13 kills.

The first set went to the Pack, but it didn't come easy. The visiting red-and-white couldn't get a win streak longer than four points, and there were 13 total scoring ties throughout the 25-point battle. It was in the second set where the team really blossomed. Highlighted by a six-point streak and service aces from Brizard and senior defensive specialist Skye Stokes, the team was in powerhouse mode.

While NC State did drop the third set, it finished off Ohio in set four. NC State relied on Ohio's errors but eventually it all played out in the red-and-white's favor. Stokes and McDaniel both notched service aces in this set, with the previous finishing the game with four.

NC State will stay in Athens to prepare for a morning game against UTEP with first serve slated for 11 a.m., before traveling back to Raleigh for a two-game home stretch against UNC-Charlotte and George Washington on Sep. 12-13.

Junior Amanda Rice paced the Pack with 18 kills and six blocks in the 3-1 win over Ohio University in game two of the Bobcat Invitational Friday evening.

The win moved the Pack to 7-1 on the season, advanced the win streak to six, and tallied head coach Luka Slabe's 47th win at the helm of the program.

The Pack jumped out to a 3-0 start and despite the Bobcats tying things up three all, NC State remained on top moving forward. After the Wolfpack scored four straight points, Ohio called a timeout with the Pack leading 17-13. Out of the timeout, Ohio recorded a kill, stopping the run by the Wolfpack. Head coach Slabe called a timeout of his own after Ohio minimized NC State's lead to two. After junior middle blocker Jada Allen was called for a ball handling violation and Ohio scored five straight, Slabe took his final timeout of the set with NC State leading 21-20. The Pack took set one 25-23 after Allen set the ball for Rice who scored the 25th point.

The Wolfpack continued to build off the momentum from the first set, as it jumped out to a 13-7 lead. Rice recorded four straight kills to help improve the lead to nine for the Pack, and totaled five in the set. On set point, senior libero Skye Stokes went to the service line and after a dig by the Bobcats went over the net, sophomore Ava Brizard spiked the ball to give the Pack set two, 25-15.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the third set, forcing the Wolfpack to regroup. Rice continued to dominate offensively as she tallied five kills and four blocks as the Pack gained its first lead of the set, 15-14. Ohio called a timeout after the Pack took the lead and Rice continued to dominate. The Bobcats rallied back to win set three after a service ace by Torre Killdow ended it.

The Pack struggled to regain momentum in set four, but took its third lead of the set, 16-15. With freshman Clara Vondran behind the service line, the Wolfpack went on a 4-0 run to build its biggest lead of the set. NC State continued to rally and took set four 25-20.

Rice finished the evening with a .364 hitting percentage to lead the Pack offensively. Brizard totaled 13 kills while senior Riley Shaak added six blocks and two kills to the books. Fifth year setter Kristen McDaniel tallied 28 assists and Stokes totaled four service aces.

NC State returns to the Convocation Center to take on UTEP at 11am on Saturday morning. The match will be streamed on ESPN+

The Wolfpack continued its win streak as it defeated UTEP, 3-1, Saturday morning in the final match of the Bobcat Invitational. The perfect 3-0 weekend for NC State sends the team back to Raleigh as tournament champion.

UTEP jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set two, forcing head coach Luka Slabe to take his first timeout. The Wolfpack struggled to gain a lead in the second set, allowing UTEP to tie the match at one all.

The Miners tied the fourth set up on three different occasions, but were unable to gain a lead. The Pack continued to dominate on both sides of the ball, ending up on top in the end.
