THROWS
Lau claimed seventh place in the men's weight throw with a throw of 16.73m (54'10.75"), a new personal best mark for the freshman. Each of Lau's three attempted throws at the Camel City Invite were better than his previous personal best of 16.16m (53'0.25").

On the women's side of the weight throw, Makala Wright earned second place with a throw of 18.11m (59'05.00"). Fellow sophomore Mahkalya Hart also competed in the event, claiming fourth with her mark of 17.04m (55'11.00").

update to the NCAA qualifying with two weeks to go before ACC's. Ian Harrison's effort when converted to a banked 200m track (which is standard) is updated to a 7:49.89. If the season ended today this would have him qualified as 13th best in the country at this point. I dont expect this time to hold up based on past standards, but it does put him in a good position to still be high up if people drop out to focus on other events as well as displays a great level of fitness to show an even faster time could be coming.

Ian Shanklin's effort converts to a 7:51.34 which has him just outside current top 16 qualifiers in 18th place.

The races that currently show on the Gopack schedule historically haven't fielded great distance fields (outside of the DMR at JDL in two weeks), so I wonder if NC State looks for a fast race for Harrison, Shanklin and Brett Gardner to run in to get one more crack at a fast time before ACC's.

As i was thinking, NC State did find a fast meet for a bunch of their distance runners to try to get one last fast time in before ACC's (I assume sprints/jumps/throws are still going to Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson this weekend).

There are several distance runners on the entry list for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston this weekend. This meet takes place on the super fast track that some of our runners ran on in December and features some great fields so fast times should be readily available.

People registered in multiple events will likely drop one of them, but for now on the Men's side i'm seeing:

Zach Hughes & Kyle Durham in the 800m

Gavin Gaynor (unattached), Brett Gardner, Travis Koekemoer, & Jake Toomey in the Mile

Brett Gardner in the 3000m

Ian Shanklin, Ian Harrison, & David Vorbach in the 5000m

The rest of the team (including some other distance runners) will be down to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational. The distance fields are not as deep in this meet, but there are some incredible fields in the sprint/jumps. Adding some context to lay out how stacked the sprints/jumps are.

Men's team athletes entered at this point:

60M - Isaiah Gadson, Alex Lang, Henry Young (5 of top 12 athletes in country are entered in this event, including our own Alex Lang)

60M Hurdles - Cameron Murray (6 of the top 15 athletes in the country are entered in this event, including our own Cameron Murray)

200M - Alexander Nunley, Henry Young (6 of the top 13 athletes in the country are entered in this event)

400M - Alexander Nunley (7 of the top 14 athletes in the country are entered in this event)

800M - Patrick Gibbons, Grant Howlett, Wesley Larson

Mile - Patrick Gibbons, Wesley Larson, John Malach

3000M - Daniel McGoey (opening up his season)

High Jump - Kyzaiah Stone (4 of the top 11 athletes in the country, + our own Kyzaiah Stone who is 20th right now)

Long Jump - Jamar Davis, Cameron Murray, William Sistruck, Kyzaiah Stone (4 of the top 15 athletes in the country)

Triple Jump - Jamar Davis (4 of the top 15 athletes in the country)

Shot Put - Nathan Lau

Weight Throw - Nathan Lau

It was a great day for the men at the Tiger Paw Invitational.

In the field events, Nathan Lau set a new PB in the Weight Throw with a distance 55' 2.75".

Jamar Davis finished 3rd in the Long Jump setting a new PB (and t-7th best mark in program history) with a distance of 25' 2.5". Kyzaiah Stone also ventured out to the Long Jump for the first time in his collegiate career, easily beating his best High School distance with a mark of 22' 1.75".

In the running events is where we really smashed it:

Cameron Murray finished 2nd in the 60m Hurdles by 5 hundredths of a second and in doing so, lowered his own school record to 7.62 seconds

Alex Lang finished 4th in a stacked 60m dash field just off his PB with a time of 6.62 seconds. Henry Young also set a new PB in the event with a time of 6.82 seconds.

Alexander Nunley set a new PB in the 400m with a time of 51.08 seconds.

Wesley Larson and Patrick Gibbons both set new PB's in the mile with times of 4:12.01 and 4:13.23 respectively.

The NC State track and field program concluded the first day of action at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C., and the Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass., earning a new school record and multiple personal bests.

SPRINTS

Cameron Murray began the day by tying his own school record in the men's 60m hurdle with a time of 7.67 in the prelims, claiming second place and advancing to the next round. His day was only getting started, as the Atlanta, Ga., native broke his own record with a time of 7.64 and finished third in the 60m hurdle semis to move onto the final. He went on to take home second place and established another new school record time of 7.61 (7.618).

On the women's side of the 60m hurdle prelims, Ally Henson recorded a time of 8.52 to advance. She would go on to produce a time of 8.41 (8.410) in the semi finals.

In the men's 60m prelims, Alex Lang generated a mark of 6.65 (6.650) to earn tenth and qualify for the next round. He then went on to earn third in the semis with a time of 6.64. Saving his best for last, Lang tied his personal best time of 6.61 to earn fourth overall place in the 60m final.

Teammate Henry Young also competed in the prelims of the event, establishing a new personal best with a time of 6.82.

The Wolfpack continued a successful outing with Alexander Nunley (51.08) earning a new personal best time in the men's 400m.

THROWS

In the men's weight throw, a throw of 16.83m (55'02.75") earned freshman Nathan Lau a new personal best mark.

Makala Wright turned in an impressive performance in the women's weight throw, finishing first overall with an 18.76m throw, good enough for sixth-best in NC State history.

MIDDLE DISTANCE

Sarah LaTour earned a podium finish in the women's mile, taking third with her time of 4:51.38.

Wesley Larson (4:12.01) claimed tenth and set a new personal best on the men's side of the mile, shaving over eight seconds off of his old time. Freshman Patrick Gibbons also participated in the event, earning a new personal best mark of 4:13.23.

JUMPS

The Wolfpack saw another athlete claim a personal best in the women's long jump, with Jirah Sidberry finishing eighth with a jump of 6.23m (20'05.25"), which now lands her at third-best in school history. Timara Chapman tied her personal best for the event with a leap of 5.91m (19'04.75").

NC State also saw success on the men's side of the long jump, with Jamar Davis placing third with his new personal best mark of 7.68m (25'02.50").

DISTANCE

Gionna Quarzo competed in the women's 5000m at the Valentine Invitational, recording a new personal best of 15:51.12. She now holds the eighth-best time in school history.

Great start to the Men's day in Boston. Gavin Gaynor 3:57.76 for a huge PB. Wont count for school record books because he's redshirting this year and running unattached.

So Brett Gardner is now the #2 miler in School Indoor history after running a huge PB of 3:58.15!

Jake Toomey and Travis Koekemoer still to come in the mile as well as a few others in the 5000

What a monster day on the track for the Pack. We've already seen Tuohy's mammoth collegiate record in the 3k, Zach Hughes set a new school record in the 800, and Brett Gardner drop an NC State #2 3:58 mile.

In the 5k Ian Shanklin, Ian Harrison & David Vorbach all broke the indoor school record in the 5000 with Shanklin and Harrison smashing it. Shanklin ran a huge time of 13:29.61, Harrison ran a massive PB with a 13:35.71 and Vorbach ran a big PB of 13:42.68.

They now hold the #1, #2 and #3 times in school history, and any record you can break that was held by Ryan Hill is an incredibly impressive record to hold.

Also Gavin Gaynor is running unattached in heat 3 starting at 10:29 in the white/green singlet and black shorts. You can see a cool moment at 14:52 when he sees his time and he is celebrating with Zach Hughes (red and white beanie and phone out recording) and Kyle Durham (gray hoodie that joins them a second later). Hughes' and Durham's races had been done for well over an hour but they were still hanging out in the infield to cheer on their teammates, pretty cool camaraderie.

NC State track and field sent athletes to compete in both the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina and the Valentine Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11. The Pack set three new school records over the course of the weekend.
At the Valentine Invite, four Wolfpack athletes raced in the women's distance events on Friday. In a very competitive field, junior Gionna Quarzo finished 18th in the 5000m. Her time of 15:51.12 is a new personal best and the eighth-best time in NC State history. In the mile, senior Samantha Bush clocked in at 4:37.90 to take 25th. Graduate student Savannah Shaw and freshman Grace Hartman raced in the 3000m, coming in 33rd and 50th, respectively.
The red-and-white sent a much bigger cohort to compete in the shorter distance and the throwing events at the Tiger Paw Invitational. The first day of competition was highlighted by graduate student Cameron Murray's school record-breaking performance in the men's 60m hurdle final. Murray clocked in at 7.61, which earned him second place.
Junior Makala Wright and graduate students Sarah LaTour and Jamar Davis took home the Pack's only other podium finishes of the day. Davis leaped 7.68m to take third in the men's long jump, and LaTour clocked in at 4:51.38 to place third in the women's mile. In the women's weight throw, Wright took first with her throw of 18.76m. Her mark is the sixth-best in Wolfpack history.

On Saturday, NC State's men's distance squad took the stage at the Valentine Invite. Junior Zach Huges set a new school record in the 800m, coming in at 1:49.55. In the men's 5000m, graduate student Ian Shanklin, junior Ian Harrison and freshman David Vorbach finished 10th, 17th and 26th, respectively.
The second day of competition in Clemson saw senior Caroline Lewis record a new personal best in the 800m at 2:12.48, a time that now ranks 10th-best in school history. In the men's 800m, freshman Patrick Gibbons and sophomores Wesley Larson and Grant Howlett all recorded personal bests.
Juniors Brett Gardner and Jake Toomey continued the trend in the men's mile, setting new personal bests of their own. Gardner's mark of 3:58.15 is the second-best in NC State history. Sophomore Jakerra Covington rounded out the red-and-white slew of personal bests, leaping 1.59m in the high jump.
The Pack aims to set some more school records on Friday, Feb. 17 when part of the team travels to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to compete in the JDL DMR Invitational while another Wolfpack squad heads to Blacksburg, Virginia to compete in the VT Challenge.

Since there is only 1 week left of the regular season next weekend, and traditionally NC State only really runs a DMR if they want to along with the field athletes competing at VT, figured id give a (near) final update to the NCAA qualifying standards as they stand:

If the season ended today, these are the athletes that would qualify on the Men's side, and what the 16th place standard currently is compared to what it took last season (9 of 15 events (i didn't research pole vault) it is already more difficult to qualify in the event than it was last year even with a full weekend of regular season meets + conference championships:

60M - Alex Lang is currently the t-14th qualifier with a time of 6.61 seconds. Standard is currently at 6.62 seconds. Last season it took a time of 6.61 seconds to qualify so we'll have to see if Lang is safe just yet.

200M - Standard currently set at 20.70 seconds. Last season it only took a time of 20.73 seconds to qualify, so its already more difficult this year. Pretty unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Henry Young has our best indoor performance with a 21.60, though he does have a 21.50 PB Indoors.

400M - Standard currently set at 46.13 seconds. Last season it took 46.16 seconds to qualify. so it's already more difficult this year. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event.

800M - Standard currently set at 1:47.31. Last season it took 1:47.66 to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this year. Zach Hughes just set our school record in 1:49.55 so it's unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event.

1 Mile - Standard currently set at 3:55.98. Last season it took a 3:55.89 to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Brett Gardner just ran a 3:58.15 but that was a big PB and it's unlikely ACC's will be anywhere near as fast of an environment to push him up any higher this season.

3000M -Standard currently set at 7:44.76. Last season it only took a 7:45.80 to qualify, so it's already a fair bit more difficult to qualify this season. Ian Harrison's 7:49.89 has him as the 27th fastest time in the country.

5000M - Standard currently is at 13:26.11 Last season it took a 13:26.44 to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this year. Ian Shanklin just ran a 13:29 which puts him just outside qualifying in 18th place in the country. He will likely have to hope that there are 2+ scratches in the event to get him in.

60M Hurdles - Standard currently set at 7.70 seconds. Last season it took an 7.72 to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this season. Cameron Murray should be safely in as he is currently t-4th in the country after his school record time of 7.62 seconds. Josh Brockman is less safe, but may be fine depending on tie breaker situation. He is currently t-8th at 7.69 seconds with 6 other athletes.

4x400M - Standard currently set at 3:04.28. Last season it only took a 3:05.21 to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this year. Probably the longest shot we are to qualify at any event other than the Pole Vault where we have Pole Vaulters on the roster. For perspective our School Record indoors in this event is 3:14.51. We haven't run a time faster than 3:15 since 2018.

DMR - Standard currently set at 9:42.16. However last season it took 9:24.56 to qualify. The NC State men currently sit 18th at 9:45.51. Given the historical standard and the fact that most teams haven't run a DMR yet, we are unlikely to qualify.

High Jump - Standard currently set at 7' 1.5". Last season it took 7' 2.5" to qualify. Kyzaiah Stone is currently t-22nd in the country with a jump of 7' 0.5". He is obviously very competitive to qualify and will hopefully look for a big height at ACC's.

Pole Vault - We do not compete anyone in this event.

Long Jump - Standard currently set at 25' 8.75". Last season it took 25' 8" to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this season. Jamar Davis is our best bet, currently t-31st in the country at 25' 2.5".

Triple Jump - Standard currently set at 52' 7.5". Last season it took 52' 10.75" to qualify. Pretty unlikely to qualify in this event. Jamar Davis has a best of 52' 6.5" but it is from outdoors. He has yet to break 51' indoors.

Shot Put - Standard currently set at 63' 11.5". Last season it took 64' 2.5" to qualify. We are not competitive in this event. Nathan Lau has our best throw this year of 47' 9.25"

Weight Throw - Standard currently set at 71' 11". Last season it took 71' 10.75" to qualify, so its already more difficult to qualify this season.. We are not competitive in this event either. Nathan Lau has our best throw this year of 55' 2.75 "".

Heptathlon- We are unlikely to compete anyone in this event.

NC State track and field competed in two different meets on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18: the VT Challenge in Blacksburg, Virginia, and the JDL DMR Invite in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over the course of the weekend, the Pack saw a new school record and tallied a number of top-10 finishes.

On day one of competition, graduate studentsSavannah Shaw and Timara Chapman, senior Sam Bush and junior Katelyn Tuohy stole the show, setting an NC State record in the women's distance medley relay at the JDL DMR Invite. Their converted time of 10 minutes and 48.55 seconds ranks second amongst women's NCAA qualifiers for the event.

At the VT Challenge, Friday's best performances from the Wolfpack came from the throwing squad, which notched three podium finishes. In the women's weight throw, junior Makala Wright and sophomore Sydney Freeman took second and third place, respectively. Wright's throw of 18.10m is the eighth-best in school history. Junior Mahkayla Hart also competed in the event, capturing fifth place with her throw of 17.06m. On the men's side, freshman Nathan Lau recorded a mark of 17.15m to claim second place and set a new personal best.

The only other red-and-white athletes that competed at the VT Challenge on Friday were sophomores Jakerra Covington and Alex Nunley. Covington placed sixth in the women's long jump and seventh in the 60m hurdle final while Nunley took fifth in the men's 60m.

Saturday's round of competition was less exciting but impressive nonetheless. Sophomore Grant Howlett was the only NC State athlete to compete at the JDL DMR Invite that day, collecting a 10th-place finish in the men's 800m. Back in Blacksburg, freshman Katie Horne, Hart and Freeman recorded top-10 finishes in the women's shot put with marks of 12.28m, 11.73m and 11.25m, respectively. Covington finished just behind them in 11th with a mark of 10.84m.

Nunley and Lau represented the Pack on the men's side as each athlete recorded a top-10 finish. In the shot put, Lau's mark of 14.46m earned him seventh place. Nunley took eighth in the 200m with a time of 22.62 seconds.

The Wolfpack concludes indoor regular season action with these two meets in the books. Up next, the red-and-white will travel to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Indoor ACC Championships beginning on Thursday, Feb. 23.

absolutely bizarre scene in the mens 5k. The top 5 places in the points standings are coming from the slow section because the fast section couldn't bother to actually race until the last mile. Embarrassing performance from some great runners couldn't even be bothered to break 14 minutes
