MEET NOTEBOOK

The Pack men have won eight duals in a row over the Cavaliers. Their only loss to Virginia in the Braden Holloway era came during his first season (2011-12), and NC State has won every matchup since then.

The Wolfpack women have picked up just two wins against the Cavaliers under Coach Holloway's leadership, both coming in the last five seasons. The teams last met in dual competition at the Casey Aquatic Center last season, where the NC State men defeated Virginia 190.5-107.5, while the Wolfpack women lost to the eventual 2021 NCAA Champions 144-153.

As the defending National Champions, the UVA women hold strong in their No. 1 ranking in the CSCAA poll, while the men sit in 18th nationally.

The third-ranked NC State men's swimming and diving squad extended its winning streak to eight in a row over Virginia with its 191-104 victory Saturday afternoon.

The matchup was rounded out by many tight races on the women's side where No. 5 NC State faced off against No. 1 Virginia. The Cavalier women took the winning score with their 173 points over the Wolfpack women's 122.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS:

NC State's divers kicked things off for the Wolfpack with numerous personal bests, highlighted by Bayne Bennett's victory on both boards. His efforts on the one-meter (366.08) and three-meter (342.00) boards marked as new personal bests.

Wolfpack junior Patrick O'Brien rounded out the podium on the three-meter with his third place finish (322.50).

Peter Edin secured a new zone cut with his personal best on the one-meter (307.43), while teammate Matt Sexton joined the talley of personal bests with his 290.70 point total on the one-meter and 295.50 points on the three-meter.

On the women's side, Helene Synnott grabbed the runner-up spot in the one-meter (272.93) and three-meter (304.80), followed by freshman Ashton Zuburg's personal best on the three-meter (266.93) and zone cut on the one-meter (293.85).

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS:

Junior Ross Dant kicked off the individual event action as he led the Wolfpack to a pair of 1-2-3-4 finishes in the distance events. His time of 8:58.20 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle stands as his fastest time this season, while he finished with a time of 4:20.77 seconds in the 500-yard event. Teammates Will Gallant, James Plage, and Curtis Wiltsey rounded out the top four in both events.

Brooke Travis broke the 10-minute mark for the second time this season in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle, where she garnered third place with her time of 9:57.10 seconds.

The sprint duo of sophomore Luke Miller and freshman Sam Hoover put up a pair of one-two finishes in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, respectively. Miller posted times of 1:34.39 (200) and 42.93 (100), while Hoover clocked in at 1:35.40 (200) and 42.98 (100).

2021 World Champion Katharine Berkoff outswam her competition in the 200-yard backstroke with her hard fought time of 1:53.26. Earlier on in the session, her time of 51.71 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke landed her in second place. Both times are well under the provisional B cut standards for the 2022 NCAA Championships.

The trio of Kacper Stokowski (46.15), Hunter Tapp (47.96), and John Healy (48.21) swept the podium in the 100-yard backstroke.

Canberra, Australia native Abbey Webb rounded out the afternoon with a pair of second place finishes in the 100 (50.21) and 200-yard (1:47.28) freestyle contests. Both times are the fastest non-invitational times she's posted this season.

The men's butterfly events were a Wolfpack showdown with all NC State men putting up top-five finishes in both races. Noah Henderson (1:45.05), Noah Bowers (1:45.19), Aiden Hayes (1:47.14), and Zach Brown (1:47.31) secured first, second, fourth, and fifth places in the 200-yard event, while Nyls Korstanje (46.02), Luke Miller (46.52), Hayes (46.84), and Henderson (47.73) dominated the top four with their performances in the 100.

Freshman sprinter David Curtiss bettered his season best time in the 50-yard freestyle (19.38) and posted a new pool record in the event for the University of Virginia Aquatic and Fitness Center pool.

RELAY HIGHLIGHTS:

The Pack men got off to a fast start with their victory in the 200-yard medley relay, setting a new pool record in the process. The quartet of Kacper Stokowski (21.24), Rafal Kusto (23.96), Nyls Korstanje (19.97), and David Curtiss (18.97) combined efforts to put up a quick time of 1:24.14, the Wolfpack's fastest non-invitational time this season.

The NC State men's B relay was also loaded with talent as the team of Aiden Hayes (21.34), Giovanni Izzo (24.23), Luke Miller (20.34), and Noah Henderson (19.06) raced their teammates to the wall, touching just .8 of a second behind the A relay with a time of 1:24.97 seconds.

Katharine Berkoff (23.77), Andrea Podmanikova (28.08), Kylee Alons (23.19), and Heather MacCausland (22.29) put up a time of 1:37.33 seconds to take the second place spot on the women's side.

In the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, the last race of the meet, the NC State men squad of David Curtiss (19.51), Nyls Korstanje (19.43), Noah Henderson (19.07), and Giovanni Izzo (19.96) were just barely out-touched in the event, as they fell just .14 seconds behind the Cavaliers with their time of 1:17.97 seconds.

Katharine Berkoff (22.58), Kylee Alons (22.02), Annabel Crush (22.68), and Heather MacCausland (22.71) rounded out the night on the women's side by posting the Wolfpack women's second fastest time of the season in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.99).

The Wolfpack kicked off the 2022 ACC Championships with a pair of medals in the 800-yard freestyle relays, and the Pack men set a new Championship Meet Record on their route to victory.

To open the swimming portion of the meet, Abbey Webb, Annabel Crush, Kate Moore, and Julia Poole teamed up for a 6:59.04 finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, narrowly edging out Louisville for the silver medal. All four women split under 1:45.6, with Webb taking it out in 1:44.83 seconds, followed by Crush (1:44.42), Moore (1:44.20), and Poole (1:45.59). The time stands as the second fastest in program history.

Sam Hoover led off the men's relay with a time of 1:32.62, and Luke Miller (1:31.03), Eric Knowles (1:32.73), and Hunter Tapp (1:31.97) brought the team home for a first-place finishing time of 6:08.35, good for an ACC Championship Meet Record. The previous meet record was set by NC State in 2017 (6:09.82).

Both relay times were good for NCAA A cuts.

NC State's divers also opened competition at the meet, with both the women and men in action. On the one-meter, Ashton Zuburg scored 245.25 points for 13th place, Helene Synnott scored 233.60 points for 16th, and Clara Tate finished in 27th with 222.10 points.

The trio of Bayne Bennett, Patrick O'Brien, and Matt Sexton competed on the 3-meter. Bennett finished 13th with 300.90 points, O'Brien scored 286.35 for 19th, and Sexton finished 34th with 251.35 points.

NC State will continue action at the ACC Championships on Wednesday, with prelims scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The entire day of action can be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra.

The NCSTATE men absolutely dominated prelims this morning. The women did decent in numbers but looks like UVA is going to be the class of the conference again and as defending national champs they are expected to but the morning that the men had was really special. In every event.

500 FREESTYLE:
The Wolfpack distance group remains unstoppable. On the men's side, Ross Dant, James Plage, Will Gallant, and Eric Knowles contributed major points to sweep the first, second, third, and fourth place spots. Dant's victory is good for an NCAA A cut, second all-time in program history, and is a new best time by two seconds. Plage and Gallant also dropped significant time from their previous lifetime best in both prelims and finals.
On the women's side, Yara Hierath (4:44.61), Kay Foley (4:44.84), and Brooke Travis (4:45.29) rounded out the A final with their efforts. All three ladies swam below the NCAA B cut standard and their times stand in the top 10 all-time performances in the event at NC State.

200 IM:
The Wolfpack women had a strong showing in the 200-yard IM, led by Abby Arens' third place finishing time of 1:55.16. She was followed by Kate Moore (6th, 1:56.01), Grace Sheble (1:56.08), and Julia Poole (1:56.27). Freshman Annabel Crush (1:56.85) and senior Emma Muzzy (1:57.00) also contributed points from the B Final.
On the men's side, NC State saw five men in the A final. Giovanni Izzo brought home the bronze medal, dropping almost three full seconds from his previous best time. He now marks third all-time in program history. Freshmen Sam Hoover (1:44.13) and Arsenio Bustos (1:44.14) contributed big points for the Pack with their fifth and sixth place finishes. Michael Moore (1:44.44) and Noah Bowers (1:44.55) rounded out the heat with their seventh and eighth place finishes.

50 FREESTYLE:
In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Katharine Berkoff missed the podium by .21 with her fourth place finishing time of 21.66. Senior Kylee Alons touched just .05 seconds behind Berkoff (21.71) for fifth place and Sophie Hansson (22.15) won the B final. Heather MacCausland dropped .01 from her morning swim to finish fourteenth (22.55), bringing in more points for the Wolfpack women.
To cap off the evening, freshman David Curtiss earned the first ACC Championship of his career in the 50-yard freestyle with his time of 18.74 seconds, marking a new NCAA A cut. Curtiss swam the event three times during Day Two of the Championship and threw down a sub-19 second swim each time, putting himself in the No. 2 all-time spot in team history. Nyls Korstanje (5th, 19.06) and Noah Henderson (6th, 19.12) rounded out the heat for the Pack.

DIVING:
Bayne Bennett, Patrick O'Brien, and Matt Sexton represented the Pack on the men's one-meter. Bennett scored 305.45 to finish 9th, while O'Brien finished 15th (286.95) and Sexton landed in 34th (232.75). The women will be back in action on the three-meter during Thursday's prelims session.

Day 2 of the 2022 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships featured a fast day in the pool, including two American records, on Wednesday at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Pavilion. After starting the finals with an American record in the 200 freestyle relay, the Virginia women concluded the day with a narrow lead over NC State atop the team leaderboard. The Wolfpack men also had a strong day Wednesday and own the team lead after Day 2.

The championships continue through Saturday.

Virginia's 800 freestyle relay teams started the night off in exciting fashion, shattering the American records on both the women's and men's side.

The Cavalier women Kate Douglass, Alex Walsh, Alexa Cuomo and Gretchen Walsh smashed the NCAA and American records in a time of 1:24.47. NC State (1:26.51) and Louisville (1:27.08) also earned podium finishes. With North Carolina and Virginia Tech's times in fourth and fifth place, respectively, the top five teams all earned NCAA A cuts to gain automatic berths in the NCAA Championships.

The UVa men's 200 free relay team of Matt Brownstead, Matt King, Connor Boyle and August Lamb touched just ahead of NC State in a time of 1:14.47 to break the American record. The Wolfpack finished in 1:14.59, while Louisville placed third in 1:15.98. UVA, NC State, UofL, Virginia Tech, Florida State and Notre Dame all picked up NCAA A cuts.

In the women's 500 freestyle, Virginia put two on the podium as Emma Weyant won in 4:37.23. Louisville's Liberty Williams (4:38.82) placed second, while UVa's Maddie Donohoe (4:41.61) took third.

NC State's men had a dominant showing in the 500 free, finishing in the top four positions. Ross Dant won with an A-cut time of 4:10.35. James Plage (4:12.57), Will Gallant (4:12.99) and Eric Knowles (4:13.60) were second through fourth, respectively.

UVa captured the top spot in the women's 200 individual medley, as Alex Walsh won in 1:52.38, earning an NCAA A standard. Duke's Sarah Foley (1:54.47) and NC State's Abby Arens (1:55.16) also earned podium finishes.

Virginia Tech's Carles Coll Marti won the men's 200 IM in a meet-record time of 1:40.67 while also earning an NCAA A cut. Louisville's Daniel Sos (1:42.74) and NC State's Giovanni Izzo (1:42.97) nabbed second and third, respectively.

The women's 50 free was another fast race, featuring four NCAA A cuts. Virginia's Kate Douglass broke her own meet and conference record, winning in 21 seconds flat and edging out teammate Gretchen Walsh by four-hundredths of a second. Walsh's time also topped the previous ACC and meet records. North Carolina's Grace Countie (21.45) took third, while NC State's Katharine Berkoff (21.66) was fourth.

NC State freshman David Curtiss won the men's 50 free in an NCAA A time of 18.77. Virginia's Matt Brownstead (19.02) and Louisville's Haridi Sameh (19.04) also earned spots on the podium.

Our girls are doing great. so is UVA We are just 6 points back going into tonight. Decent prelims this morning. After tonight, it will be a two team race. I think UVA will gradually pull away but this will not be a route. It is possible that we finish 1 and 2 in the NCAA championships again.

Our men were dominant in Prelims this morning again. We had 5 more A times than any other team. We are so dominant that frankly, the mens championship may be over after tonight practically. We have over a 100 point lead and it will at least double tonight.

Good to hear the girls are keeping it close. How are the men's chances at nationals? Would be so cool to see them win it all.

I am not sure about nationals. We are dominating ACC championships because of depth. You do not win nationals because of depth. You win it with stars scoring points. This team absolutely can and should get another top 4 finish but whether we can win or not, I have no idea. Couple people on here that know a lot better than I do can tell you more. That is just what I have noticed from prior years. We have a lot of young talent though that will be stars. I think if not this year, we are reallly close.

UVA takes the Women's 200 IM relay and sets a new American Record I believe. Wolfpack finishes 2nd about 1.5 seconds.

In the men's 200 IM relay, Louisville edges out N. C. State. Curtiss swam the anchor leg and was behind when he hit the water but made up and just barely got out touched. Louisville possibly may have set an American record.

Correction: Wolfpack relay team is DQ'ed again for a bad exchange between the 3rd and 4th legs. Video did seem to confirm. Damn it.

UVA's Nelson wins the 400 IM. Wyatt of UVA second, Shelbie and Moore of N. C State finish 3 and 4 respectively. Good showing but UVA out points us in this event. They are really good..

I'm not sure why but our relays over the years get dq'd more than about anyone. We got dq'd in same event last year and if we would have finished in last place. We would have won championship. As it was we lost to Louisville by 6 points
