NC State began the 2021-2022 season by cruising past the Tar Heels on the road at UNC's Triple Distance Meet Wednesday evening.

In the midweek meet that featured a unique lineup of events, the Wolfpack proved its absolute domination by swimming the fastest time in all but five of the 40 events contested.

The Wolfpack women defeated the Tar Heels 220-178, and the Pack men rounded out the night with a 231.59-169 victory over UNC.

In total, the Pack swept the 1-2-3 spots in eight total races, and eleven members of the squad picked up multiple top finishes.

Freshman Annabel Crush earned her first collegiate top finish in the 300-yard IM.

Nyls Korstanje led the way in the men's 50 and 100-yard freestyles by finishing with times of 19.73 and 44.04, while teammate and fellow Olympian Kacper Stokowski secured his hand on the wall first in the 50 (21.79) and 100-yard (47.15) backstrokes.

Noah Henderson picked up top spots in the 50, 100, and 150-yard butterfly events with speedy times of 21.49, 47.03, and 1:16.44, respectively.

THOUGHTS FROM THE COACHES
Swimming
"We're excited to get our season underway!," said head coach Braden Holloway. "The team has been looking forward to competing again, especially competing with fans in the stands. We have a solid first week with two great programs, with UNC in Chapel Hill and Tennessee at home. We look forward to welcoming our alumni back this weekend and are excited to learn where our team currently is. This will be a good starting point for us to evaluate and analyze where we are at this point early in the season."

Diving
"I have nothing but excitement for our first meet with Tennessee," said Wes Mattice regarding his first home meet as the Wolfpack diving coach. "Dave has been a friend of mine for a few years now and is someone I have looked up to as a seasoned coach and now a peer. The Wolfpack divers and I are just starting this journey together. We had a first great meet on Wednesday, which was a big first step. For the meet this Friday, we wilI be bringing a bigger squad of divers, and I'm excited to see where we all are after the work we have done the past few months. We can really start to map out where we are and where we want to go. The meet against Tennessee will be a great next step in our future, and we couldn't have picked a better opponent."

PACK IN THE POLLS
The Wolfpack women will begin the year at No. 3 overall, and the Pack men check in at No. 4 in the nation as the highest-ranked ACC squad. Both teams finished last season in the top six of the final CSCAA poll and secured top-eight finishes at the NCAA Championships.

BACK WITH THE PACK
Overall, 16 members of the Pack who gained All-American status in at least one individual or relay event last season are back in Raleigh - 8 women and 8 men.
The Wolfpack women's squad returns its top seven individual scorers from last year's second place NCAA Championship team. That includes Kylee Alons (44 points), Katharine Berkoff (44 points), Sophie Hansson, Kate Moore (27 points) and Andrea Podmanikova (27 points) each finaled in at least two individual events
Four of the five women who contributed to the Pack's five national titles also return to the squad in 2021-22. Sirena Rowe (200 medley relay) is the only one missing from last season.
The Pack men bring back all individual points from last season's NCAA Champioships meet as all of those performances came from non-seniors. Ross Dant (27 points) and Kacper Stokowski (17 points) lead the tally after reaching the A final in the 500 free and 1650 free (Dant) and the 100 backstroke (Stokowski).
All of the Wolfpack's ACC gold medalists (both individual and relay) across the men's and women's teams are on this year's squad. That number includes individual ACC gold medalists Kylee Alons (50 free) Katharine Berkoff (100 back), Sophie Hansson (100/200 breaststroke), Emma Muzzy (200 back) and Kacper Stokowski (100 back).

WOLFPACK WELCOME
Ahead of the 2021-22 season, SwimSwam released its rankings for the 2021 signing class (the current freshmen). NC State's men checked in with the highest-ranked class, and the Wolfpack women were ranked third

SCOUTING TENNESSEE
The Vols make the trek back to the state of North Carolina after sweeping UNC Wilmington 214-81 (men) and 196-96 (women) just two weeks ago. In that meet, the men swept every individual event and the women won all but two individual events.

In 2020-2021, the Tennessee women finished 10th at the NCAA Championships, while the men finished 24th. Following the opening week of 2021-22 competition for Wolfpack swimming and diving, NC State sprinter Nyls Korstanje was named ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

An 11-time All-American and seven-time ACC champion, Korstanje earned the weekly award for the first time in his NC State career. He was also the 2019 ACC Men's Freshman of the Year.

The Wolfpack junior made a dynamic return to collegiate competition after spending the 2020-21 season preparing for the Olympics. He picked up top finishes in all of his individual races last week and helped lead the Pack men to dual wins over North Carolina and Tennessee.

Most impressively, Korstanje clocked in at 19.66 in the 50-yard freestyle to lead the Pack's 1-2-3 sweep over the Volunteers. He added a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (46.41) at that meet and also competed in and won the 100-yard freestyle (44.04) against the Tar Heels.

The Netherlands native also swam the butterfly leg (20.10) of NC State's 200-yard medley relay, which placed first against Tennessee in an overall time of 1:24.92.

NC State swimming and diving junior Katharine Berkoff was honored as ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week for the second time in her career, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

The award comes after the backstroker contributed several stellar performances in the team's victories over Auburn and Kentucky last weekend. It marks the second such honor of the three-time NCAA Champion's career, as she was also named ACC Swimmer of the Week last season after competing at the UNC Invite.

Berkoff took the top spot in both of her individual races at the Auburn's tri-meet over the weekend. Her 100-yard backstroke time of 51.85 marks the second-fastest time in the ACC this season, and her impressive 1:53.73 in the 200-yard backstroke was almost three seconds faster than the field and ranks second nationally this season.

The Missoula, Mont., native also contributed a 24.17 backstroke split in the Wolfpack's 200-yard medley relay victory (1:37.34). Berkoff also found success in a slate of exhibition events that NC State swam on Saturday. She touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.52), third in the 100-yard butterfly (56.26) and first as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:32.48, 23.35 leadoff split).

The NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams extended their season winning streak after defeating the Duke Blue Devils Saturday morning during the Wolfpack's first dual of the 2022 calendar year.

The No. 2 NC State men defeated Duke 167-56, and the Wolfpack women rounded out the session with a 139-87 victory over the Blue Devils.

NC State absolutely dominated the meet by capturing the first place spots in all but four of the 28 swimming events contested. Of those events, the Wolfpack swept a total of eight events, earning the first, second, and third place spots in those races.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:
The Wolfpack distance powerhouse once again showed their endurance, as the men and women collectively swept the podium in several events.

In the women's 1,000-yard freestyle, the trio of Brooke Travis (10:05.44), Yara Hierath (10:09.82), and Grace Sheble (10:20.81) collected first, second, and third places, respectively.

The men followed the women's lead in the same event, securing first through fourth places. Will Gallant led the way (9:00.89), followed by Eric Knowles (9:13.41), Curtis Wiltsey (9:15.48), and Owen Lloyd (9:19.71).

Australian native Abbey Webb finished the session with three individual victories in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.43), 50-yard freestyle (23.45), and 100-yard freestyle (49.85).
