On the men's side, NC State slated a 23rd-place finish with 497 points, led by graduate student JP Flavin.

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Kelsey Chmiel was the first finisher for the Wolfpack for the second-straight meet, crossing the finish line in second place. should be noted that this was without our #2/#3 Hannah Steelman. And we beat the defending champs BYU (though they were also without their #1). NC state and BYU should be the top 2 again at Nationals this year so this is big for the mental of the girls team to know they can beat them, even if neither team had a full strength top 5 runners.

NC State junior Kelsey Chmiel has been named ACC Cross Country Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. The honor is the second of Chmiel's career and is her second in the 2021 season.

Chmiel garners the award after a stellar performance at the 2021 Nuttycombe Invitational. The Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native posted a second-place finish at the meet with a 6K time of 20:00.02, marking her second-straight competition with a top-three finish. She was the first member of the Wolfpack across the finish line, and throughout the race she never fell below 16th.

With the finish, the junior placed ahead of 2020 NCAA runner-up Taylor Roe of Oklahoma State and trailed only the USTFCCCA's Oct. 18 National Athlete of the Week, West Virginia's Ceili McCabe.

Chmiel was one of two members of the Pack to finish the meet in the top five and helped the women's squad to a second-place team finish in a field that featured 19 of the top-30 teams nationally.

20 points as a record for the women's side.

The NC State men scored 15 back in 2000, I think. Pons, Pons, Rodgers, Dugan, and Alzindani, IIRC. Dugan and Alzindani played paper rock scissors coming down the stretch to see who would finish 4th vs 5th. (The ACC wasn't as strong back then, but don't let that get in the way of a good story.)

NC State women's cross country wins its 27th ACC title.

That is the most of any women's program in ACC history and the second-most overall (NCST Men's Swim & Dive, 30).

The men's result is embarrassing. The ACC is getting better as a whole, but the men's team has been disappointing for several years now.

Recruiting on the men's side has been down for several years. Craig Engels trashing Geiger's training hasn't helped. You've got to be big, strong and durable to survive the mileage and pounding. It has worked well for Hill, Crawford, Shanklin and Flavin recently. Also wonder whether the male runner these days are tough enough to put in the work. That's not in question with our women, who are tough as hell.
