The NC State men's and women's cross country programs checked into the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason National Rankings both in the top 30, as announced by the organization on Tuesday. The women's program tabbed the No. 2 spot while the men checked in at T-No. 28

The Wolfpack opens its schedule with its lone home meet of the 2021 year, hosting the adidas XC Challenge Friday, Sept. 17 at the WakeMed Cross Country Course in Cary, N.C.

The first weekend in October sees NC State compete in a pair of meets. Part of the team will make the trip to South Bend, Ind., for the Joe Piane Invite Friday, Oct. 1 while another group will compete at the Great American XC Festival Saturday, Oct. 2 in Cary, N.C.

Friday, Oct. 15 the squad splits up again as it heads to the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisc., and the ECU Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C. The meets will mark the final regular-season competitions for the Wolfpack.

The 2021 ACC Cross Country Championships are set to be hosted by Notre Dame Friday, Oct. 29 in South Bend, Ind. Postseason competition continues Friday, Nov. 12 at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Lexington, Ky.

The top two teams from the regional meet will receive automatic bids for the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 20 in Tallahassee, Fla.

The NC State cross country programs are slated to begin their 2021 seasons Friday, Sept. 17 at the adidas XC Challenge at the WakeMed Cross Country Course in Cary, N.C. The meet will mark the only home competition for the Wolfpack in 2021.

NC State will be joined at the competition by Campbell, the Davidson women, Duke, NC A&T, NC Central, the North Carolina men, UNC Greensboro and Wake Forest.

The NC State cross country teams opened their 2021 seasons on Friday, competing at the adidas XC Challenge.

The Wolfpack women dominated the race from start to finish, sweeping the field with 15 team points. Nine of the top-10 runners at the 2K mark and at the finish were members of the NC State team, eight of whom sported the Pack uniforms. NC State claimed the top six spots overall.

Sophomore Brett Gardner was the first member of the Pack across the finish line in the men's race, leading the squad to a second-place overall finish with 47 points. No. 29 North Carolina took first with 31 points.

WOMEN'S 5K RECAP
NC State began the race running as a pack and never looked back. Twelve members of the team finished the race in the top 14 with 10 of those runners competing in an NC State uniform.

Sophomore Katelyn Tuohy took home her first career individual title, running the course in 16:29.6. She was closely followed by junior Kelsey Chmiel (16:31.0). The duo of New York natives finished the race over 10 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

Sam Bush claimed third place in 16:41.3, crossing the finish line just ahead of Sarah LaTour (fourth, 16:43.6). Hannah Steelman rounded out the Wolfpack scoring crew in fifth place with a time of 16:52.6.

In sixth place with Heather Holt, who completed the 5K in 17:05.0. NC State's remaining finishes were all in the top 15 and included graduate transfer Allie Hays (ninth, 17:13.7), Mariah Howlett (10th, 17:25.6), Anna Vess (11th, 17:37.0) and Gionna Quarzo (14th, 17:43.6).

Freshman Brooke Rauber ran unattached, placing eighth with a time of 17:12.2. Isabel Zimmermann (12th, 17:38.6), Jenna Schulz (21st, 17:54.2), Claire Walters (26th, 18:19.1) and Sierra Collins (29th, 18:22.9) each competed unattached as well.

MEN'S 5K RECAP
Gardner claimed third place, running a 17:54.0 for the highest finish of his career. He finished the race just ahead of senior JP Flavin, who posted a time of 17:54.6 and took fourth.

Nate Kawalec was the Wolfpack's third scorer, placing 10th in 18:13.5. JJ Malach (15th, 18:22.6) and Dan McGoey (18th, 18:26.7) rounded out the scoring group.

Robinson Snider and Ian Harrison each placed in the top 25. Snider made his NC State debut at the meet, recording a 19th-place finish and a time of 18:28.0 while Ian Harrison placed 22nd with a time of 18:38.7.

Gavin Gaynor (40th, 19:09.7), Jake Toomey (45th, 19:18.3) and Kyle Durham (61st, 20:03.2) each suited up for the Wolfpack at the meet as well.

Matt Willis ran unattached, finishing 12th with a time of 18:19.3. Miles Ally, Matt Bogdan and Zach Hughes finished within seven spots of each other, each competing unattached as well. Ally recorded an 18:56.6 for 33rd place, Bogdan posted an 18:59.7 for 35th and Hughes tabbed a 19:08.2 to place 39th.

Not very happy with that men's result. No idea if that was the full squad, though.

Women looked great. Steelman needs to get up in the top 3 (unless everyone else just legitimately beat her)

3rd *NCAA* championship.

The women's XC teams have already won national championships, but that was in the pre-NCAA era for women's XC.

The NC State cross country teams are slated to continue their 2021 seasons at the Joe Piane Invitational Friday, Oct.1. The meet, hosted by Notre Dame, will be contested on the Burke Golf Course.

The Wolfpack women will be one of 13 ranked teams at the Joe Piane Invitational, a field that includes five teams ranked in the top 10 and 10 in the top 25.

On the men's side, NC State will face 11 teams in the top 30, including host institution No. 2 Notre Dame.

The men's and women's NC State cross country squads posted successful outings at the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday, each earning a top-10 finish in fields stacked with ranked teams.

The T-No. 1 Wolfpack women claimed first place over four teams ranked in the top 10, scoring 38 points as the only team with more than two finishers in the top 10.

NC State's men's squad made a strong showing in a field that included 11 ranked teams, tabbing 286 points to place 10th overall.

WOMEN'S BLUE 5K RECAP
NC State led throughout the race and increased its presence up front as the competition continued. At the one-mile mark, Katelyn Tuohy and Hannah Steelman were each in the top 5, and by the 4000m mark five members of the squad were in the top 10.

At the race's conclusion, it was junior Kelsey Chmiel who crossed the finish line first for NC State. The Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native placed third, running a 16:14.6 that was just 4.3 seconds behind first-place finisher and reigning NCAA individual champion Mercy Chelangat.

Steelman clocked a 16:23.0 for sixth place and was joined in the top 10 by Katelyn Tuohy (eighth place, 16:23.7) and Sarah LaTour (ninth place, 16:26.9)

Allie Hays rounded out the NC State scoring, finishing 12th in 16:32.9.

Sam Bush (19th, 16:42.3), Heather Holt (45th, 16:58.3) and Dominique Clairmonte (88th, 17:22.0) each suited up for the Blue race as well.

MEN'S BLUE 5M RECAP
The Wolfpack moved into the top 10 as a team by the 4000m mark and remained there until the end of the race.

JP Flavin clocked the fastest time for NC State, completing the five-mile course in 23:43.4 for an 11th-place finish.

Graduate transfer Robinson Snider posted a 42nd-place finish (24:21.8) as the Pack's second runner across the line while Gavin Gaynor ran a 24:32.5 to take 50th.

Nate Kawalec and Brett Gardner were the final two scorers, Kawalec placing 72nd (24:46.5) and Gardner finishing 111th (25:10.0).

Dan McGoey, Ian Harrison and Jake Toomey all laced up to run for the Pack as well. McGoey finished in 130th (25:22.8), Harrison tabbed the 139th spot (25:32.4) and Toomey placed 159th (26:04.0).

WOMEN'S OPEN 5K RECAP
Five women competed in the open 5K, four of whom finished in the top 10.

Savannah Shaw led the way, finishing in the top spot with a time of 16:58.0 and was followed closely in the standings by Mariah Howlett's third-place finish (17:12.0).

Isabel Zimmermann tabbed fifth, running a 17:24.4. while Gionna Quarzo posted a 17:31.4 for ninth. Anna Vess rounded out the open 5K competitors, finishing 26th with a time of 18:07.8

The NC State cross country teams are slated to complete their regular seasons Friday as they compete at the Nuttycombe Invitational (Madison, Wisc.) and the ECU Pirate Invitational (Greenville, N.C.).

The Wolfpack will compete against another strong field at the Nuttycombe Invitational. The men's race will see 18 of the top-30 teams compete while the women's side will feature 16 of the top 30.

Live results and live streams will not be available for the ECU Pirate Invitational.

PACK IN THE POLLS
NC State's women took sole possession of the national No. 1 ranking on Oct.5 after spending three weeks tied for the spot with BYU in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.

Regionally, the NC State women hold the top spot and have been at the spot for the entirety of the season. The Wolfpack men check into the Southeast regional rankings at sixth.

LAST TIME OUT
The Pack posted impressive showings at the Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 1 that were highlighted by a first-place finish by the women's squad. NC State was the only team to place four scorers in the top 10, an effort led by Kelsey Chmiel's third-place finish. Chmiel completed the course in 16:14.6, and her performance was good to earn her ACC Performer of the Week honors on Oct. 5.

The men placed 10th as a team in a field of 24, 11 of which were ranked. JP Flavin secured an 11th-place individual finish in the five-mile race, running a 23:43.4. Overall, the Wolfpack men tallied 286 points.
