NC State women's soccer (4-3-2, 0-1-0 ACC) dropped a hard-fought battle with Virginia Tech (7-2-0, 1-0-0 ACC) on Saturday evening in its ACC opener, as it fell, 1-0, at Thompson Field.

The teams battled to the final minute and provided plenty of scoring opportunities, as the squads tallied 10 shots apiece (three on target), but the Hokies, who are receiving votes for this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll, managed to come away with the three points thanks to a second-half goal.

The first half was tightly contested with no score, as the possession was dead even between the teams. The Pack's best look in the half was by Denae Antoine in the 22nd minute when she looked to capitalize on an errant Virginia Tech pass at the top of the box, but it went right to the hands of goalkeeper Alia Skinner.

Maria Echezarreta made a crucial save in the 35th minute to keep the match scoreless, as she stretched out to deflect a shot by Aino Vuorinen at the top of the box that was destined for the top right corner of the net.

NC State looked to pull ahead within the first three minutes of the second half with a pair of shots on target by Jameese Joseph and Leyah Hall-Robinson, respectively, but both were saved by Skinner. Joseph, Hall-Robinson and Soto rattled off another four combined shots in the opening 15 minutes of the half, but just couldn't find that needed goal.

In the 73rd minute, Virginia Tech struck when Karlie Johnson tapped in her first goal of the season from just above the penalty box. Emma Steigerwald forced a turnover, then Emily Gray took the ball down inside the box and played across to Johnson, who put away what proved to be the game-winner to the bottom right corner of the net.

The Pack outshot the Hokies, 8-4, in the second half, and controlled possession for 54 percent of the contest. Antoine, Hall-Robinson and Joseph were responsible for nine of the team's 10 shots, as they tallied three apiece.

NC State is set to open a three-game home stand September 23 when it hosts Clemson at Dail

.@PackWSoccer has been on an offensive tear to start its season, but the 4-3-2 (0-1-0 ACC) start doesn't quite reflect that.

Staff writer @KatPeters15 looks to the numbers to offer some solutions to the Pack's woes against tougher opponents.

NC State's @PackWSoccer missed its normal season, but came back to play and win.

In between, the pandemic altered everything, everywhere. The team was doing off-season training in March 2020 but had to shut that down. International players went home and didn't come back. Incoming recruits opted to play professionally overseas instead of dealing with the uncertainty of when collegiate sports might return. As spring gave way to summer last year, NC State found its 25-person roster depleted by nearly 50%. Other women were still rehabbing injuries or dealing with health concerns that may have been precipitated by COVID-19. The ACC decided to pull together a season in the fall, but the Wolfpack didn't have enough players to make it viable. It was the only ACC school not to participate, and women's soccer was the only team at NC State not to play as scheduled in the fall.

Santoro was the one who decided to sit out in the fall, delivering the news via Zoom back in August. The players understood the rationale, but there was a sense of relief in November when Santoro floated the possibility of an enhanced spring season of nine games from February to April. By then, enough players had recovered from injury or returned from overseas to make things work. Games were spaced out to accommodate the smaller roster of 16 players.

This was the Wolfpack's fifth consecutive contest against a team that is ranked or receiving votes for the national polls, and all of its losses this year have been by a one-goal margin.
